NTPC LTD
A MAHARATNA COMPANY
INTRODUCTION
NTPC is India’s largest energy conglomerate with roots
planted way back in 1975 to accelerate power development
in India.
Since then it has established itself as the dominant power
major with presence in the entire value chain of the power
generation business.
From fossil fuels it has forayed into generating electricity
via hydro, nuclear and renewable energy sources.
This foray will play a major role in lowering its carbon
footprint by reducing green house gas emissions.
To strengthen its core business, the corporation has
diversified into the fields of consultancy, power trading,
training of power professionals, rural electrification, ash
utilisation and coal mining as well.
NTPC became a Maharatna company in May 2010, one of
the only four companies to be awarded this status. NTPC
was ranked 431st in the ‘2015, Forbes Global 2000’ ranking
of the World’s biggest companies.

NETRA
As a leading player in the world energy sector, NTPC
recognized the potential of cutting edge technology in
further improving its services and efficiency. The company
is fully aligned to the needs of adapting to emerging
technologies and upgrading the technologies through
research and development. The company is particularly
sensitive to Research & Development and the paradigm
shift which it can make. NETRA (NTPC Energy Technology
Research Alliance) set up in 2009 is the outcome of this
vision.
Its core areas of research are: climate change, waste
management, new & renewable energy, efficiency
improvement and cost reduction besides providing scientific
support to NTPC and external utilities for improving
availability, reliability and efficiency.
NETR's emphasis is on developing cutting edge technologies by
carrying out applied research which will translate into cost
reductions as well as a greener & cleaner tomorrow. NETRA is
networked with Institutes/organizations for research related to
development of cost economic technologies in the field of
climate change, new & renewable energy, efficiency & reliability
enhancement of thermal power generation and CO2
mitigation/fixation. It is also in touch with many International
institutes/organisations for networking in these areas.
Initiatives are taken to develop technologies for reducing forced
outages, installing intelligent online monitoring of critical
components, understanding the likely damages due to corrosion
and providing appropriate solutions etc. Effort is being made for
reducing cost of generation by either increasing the overhaul
cycle or reducing overhaul duration through correct and proper
health assessment of critical components, developing diagnostic
tools and ensuring environmental & safety compliances. The
prime thrust is towards clean and economic power generation.
Patents have been filed in the areas of climate change, waste
management etc.
A Research Advisory Council (RAC) comprising of eminent
scientists and experts from India and abroad has been
constituted to steer NETRA for high end research. In-house
Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) has also been constituted
to provide directions for improving plant performance &
reducing cost of generation.
The key expertise lies in providing scientific support to
stations for improving their life, performance and
developing technologies for clean & economic power
generation for the sustainable growth of power sector.
NETRA is a Member of IEA GHG R&D Program France,
IERE Japan & CSLF France. NETRA is a National Boiler
Board Certified RLA Agency.
POWER MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE
(PMI)
NTPC runs a state-of-the-art Power Management
Institute(PMI), at NOIDA. PMI has over the years trained a
large number of professionals from NTPC, State Electricity
Boards and other power utilities in the country. Also, PMI
delivers programmes to Power Sector companies in the
Gulf Counties at their locations and participants from South
Asia, Gulf and African countries come to PMI for attending
programmes.
CENPEEP
Centre for Power Efficiency & Environmental
Protection was established to take initiatives to
address climate change issues as well as improving
the overall performance of coal-fired power plants. It
was set up in collaboration with USAID and is a
symbol of NTPC’s pro active and voluntary
approach towards the cause of reducing green
house gases emission. The centre functions as a
resource centre for acquisition, demonstration and
dissemination of state-of-the-art technologies and
practices for the performance improvement of coal
fired power plants for the entire power sector of
India.
ASH UTILISATION
Fly ash is a byproduct of power generation with coal. Sustainable
ash utilisation is one of the key concerns at NTPC. The Ash
Utilisation Division (AUD), set up in 1991, strives to derive
maximum usage from the vast quantities of ash produced at its
power stations. The ash is now being looked at as a commodity
that could generate wealth for the company in the long run. The
AUD proactively formulates policies, plans and programmes for
ash utilisation. It further monitors the progress in these activities
and works for developing new segments of ash usage. Ash
Utilisation Cell at each station handles ash utilisation activities.
Research has shown that the quality of fly ash produced at
NTPC’s power stations is extremely good with respect to fineness,
low unburnt carbon and has high pozzolanic activity and conforms
to the requirements of IS 3812 - 2003-Pulverized Fuel Ash for use
as Pozzolana in cement, cement mortar and concrete. The fly ash
generated at NTPC stations is ideal for use in the manufacture of
cement, concrete, concrete products, cellular concrete products,
bricks/blocks/ tiles etc.

The centre functions as a resource centre for acquisition, demonstration and dissemination of state-of-the-art technologies and practices for the performance improvement of coal fired power plants for the entire power sector of India.
  • 26. ASH UTILISATION Fly ash is a byproduct of power generation with coal. Sustainable ash utilisation is one of the key concerns at NTPC. The Ash Utilisation Division (AUD), set up in 1991, strives to derive maximum usage from the vast quantities of ash produced at its power stations. The ash is now being looked at as a commodity that could generate wealth for the company in the long run. The AUD proactively formulates policies, plans and programmes for ash utilisation. It further monitors the progress in these activities and works for developing new segments of ash usage. Ash Utilisation Cell at each station handles ash utilisation activities. Research has shown that the quality of fly ash produced at NTPC’s power stations is extremely good with respect to fineness, low unburnt carbon and has high pozzolanic activity and conforms to the requirements of IS 3812 - 2003-Pulverized Fuel Ash for use as Pozzolana in cement, cement mortar and concrete. The fly ash generated at NTPC stations is ideal for use in the manufacture of cement, concrete, concrete products, cellular concrete products, bricks/blocks/ tiles etc.
