SECTOR ANALYSIS
• Entertainment consists of any activity which provides a diversion or
    permits people to amuse themselves in their leisure time.
    Entertainment is generally passive, such as watching opera or a
    movie. Active forms of amusement, such as sports, are more often
    considered to be recreation.Activities such as personal reading or
    practicing a musical instrument are considered to be hobbies.
   Entertainment may also provide fun, enjoyment and laughter. The industry
    that provides entertainment is called the entertainment industry. There are
    many forms of entertainment for example: cinema, theatre, sports, games
    and social dance. Puppets, clowns, pantomimes and cartoons tend to appeal
    to children, though adults may also find them enjoyable.

   or bingo. Racing, chess or checkers may develop physical or mental

Sony Pictures :

•Sony was founded in 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. The two
complemented each other with a unique blend of product innovation and marketing
savvy, and formed a company that would eventually grow into a more than $60
billion global organization.
•In 1953, the company earned licensing rights to the transistor from Western Electric. Ibuka urged
his engineers to improve production methods with the goal of creating a consumer product, the
transistor radio. In 1955, the TR-55, Japan’s first transistor radio was launched. And, in 1957, Sony
released the world’s first pocket transistor radio, establishing a market leadership position for the
company.
•On November 8, 1989, Japanese corporation Sony acquired the American film and television
production company Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. (Columbia Pictures, Tri-Star Pictures,
etc.) from The Coca-Cola Company for US$3.4 billion. Sony also acquired the Guber-Peters
Entertainment Company for $200 million (formerly Barris Industries, Inc.) when Sony hired
Peter Guber and Jon Peters to head CPE and it was all led by Norio Ohga, who was the chairman of
Sony during that time.The company was renamed Sony Pictures Entertainment on August 7, 1991.

•On June 3, 2011, SonyPictures.com was hacked, resulting in over a million passwords and e-mail
addresses being stolen

    Sir Howard Stringer (born February 19, 1942) is a Welsh-born American businessman
     and the chairman, president and CEO of Sony Corporation


    Stringer was born in Cardiff, Wales, the son of Marjorie Mary ,a Welsh
    schoolteacher, and Harry Stringer, an English sergeant in the Royal Air Force..
    Stringer became a naturalized citizen in 1985 and now holds dual US-UK
    citizenship.His younger brother, Rob Stringer, is chairman of Sony Music
    Label Group.
    Stringer had a 30-year career at CBS, where he was a journalist, producer and
    senior executive. He served as president of CBS from 1988 to 1995, where he
    was responsible for all the broadcast activities of its entertainment, news,
    sports, radio and television stations

    Sringer began work at Sony in May 1997 as president of its US operational unit (
    Sony Corporation of America). He was made a Sony group executive officer in May
    1998.[7]
    Since June 2005, he has been chairman and CEO of Sony overseeing the entire
    businesses of Sony, including its media and electronics subsidiaries such as the

 History :
                                        Zee TV was founded by Subhash Chandra and
  was launched in India on 1 October 1992, becoming the first Hindi satellite channel.

STAR TV
   The company was launched in 1990 by Subash Chandra Goyal as a part of Zee TV but
    was later bought by STAR TV (Asia). It started broadcasting five television channels on
    1 January 1991 from AsiaSat 1 Satellite. Launch of The STAR TV Network pioneered
    satellite television in India and in the process
catalyzed explosive growth in the media industry across the entire region
•   In 1993 Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation purchased 63.6% of STAR for over $500
    million, followed by the purchase of the remaining 36.4% in 1 January 1993.
•   Most of its programs are syndicated U.S. shows, for example soap operas like The
    Bold and the Beautiful and Santa Barbara and talk shows like Donahue and Oprah.
    Even when the star plus has more audience in India, It is threatened by the launch of
    new channels.
•   In August 2009, STAR Broadcasting Corporation revealed a restructure to its Asian
    broadcast businesses into four units - STAR (India), STAR (Greater China), STAR
    Select and Fox International Channels.

Uday Shankar, Chief Executive Officer,STAR India
   Uday Shankar is the Chief Executive Officer of STAR India, a wholly owned subsidiary
   of News Corporation and the number one media company in India. He is responsible
   for the transformation of Star Network into a pan-Indian broadcaster with the
   addition of Bengali, Marathi and South Indian languages to its portfolio. Shankar has
   also been instrumental in shaping STAR India into a broad spectrum media company
   with interests beyond television broadcasting into film production, television
   distribution and home shopping.

    A journalist by profession, Shankar is a veteran of news business. He has to his credit
    the remarkable launch of Hindi news channel, Aaj Tak, which re-defined the television
    news in India. He has also been the Editor and CEO of MCCS, the company that runs
    Star News.

    Shankar holds an MPhil degree in Economic History from Jawaharlal Nehru University
    in Delhi. He also holds a post graduate diploma in journalism from Times School of
    Journalism and is an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad.

DOMESTIC VALUE
 The global entertainment & media market will see sustained growth
  and a 6.4% compound annual growth rate to hit $2 trillion in 2011,
  according to a new PricewaterhouseCoopers report.
 In particular, convergent platforms will rise at double-digit rates and
  will represent more than 50% of global entertainment spending by
  2011.
 The report says that internet, TV distribution and video games will
  be the fastest-growing areas.
 According to the report, filmed entertainment rose 2.9% globally in
  2006, following a 2.6% decline in 2004. An annual growth rate of
  4.9% on filmed entertainment spending is predicted, rising to
  $103bn in 2011 from $81bn in 2006. Digital downloading and digital
  cinema rollout will contribute to growth.

INTERNATIONAL VALUE
   with a compound annual growth rate of 18.3% leading to a tally fo $73bn in
    2011. That will represent an estimated 14% of the global advertising market
    in 2011. Global advertising whole will show an annual growth rate of 5.4%
    rising to $531bn in 2011, the PwC analysts predict.


The US will remain the largest but slowest growing Entertainment Media market, with
           a compound annual growth rate of 5.3% to reach $754bn in 2011.
  Asia Pacific will remain the fastest-growing region during the next five years, PwC
 forecasts, with the fastest economic growth and double digit increases in Internet, TV
          distribution, casino and other regulated gaming and video games.

         STRENGTHS

customer reach. The various segments of the Media And Entertainment industry like
television and film industry have a large customer base.
2. The growing middle class with higher disposable income has become the strength of the

3. Change in the lifestyle and spending patterns of the Indian masses on entertainment.
4. Technological innovations like online distribution channels, web-stores, multi- and mega-
plexes are complementing the ongoing revolution and the growth of the sector .
5. Indian film industry is second largest in the world and the largest in terms of the
films produced and tickets sold.

  • 3. SECTOR ANALYSIS • Entertainment consists of any activity which provides a diversion or permits people to amuse themselves in their leisure time. Entertainment is generally passive, such as watching opera or a movie. Active forms of amusement, such as sports, are more often considered to be recreation.Activities such as personal reading or practicing a musical instrument are considered to be hobbies.  Entertainment may also provide fun, enjoyment and laughter. The industry that provides entertainment is called the entertainment industry. There are many forms of entertainment for example: cinema, theatre, sports, games and social dance. The two complemented each other with a unique blend of product innovation and marketing savvy, and formed a company that would eventually grow into a more than $60 billion global organization. •In 1953, the company earned licensing rights to the transistor from Western Electric.
