3. INTRODUCTION
• The Chromecast is a $35 HDMI dongle that’s about the size of a
USB flash drive, weighs just 34 grams (1 .2 oz) and is of 2”.
• It’s sold as a way to make your TV smart: you plug it in, and
after a quick setup you can easily queue up Netflix and
YouTube on the big screen from a phone
• The interesting thing about the Chromecast is the Chrome in
its name. Once you have the Google Cast extension installed in
Chrome on your Mac, PC or Chromebook, you can stream a
document, a Flash video, the mock-up of your new site.

4. Chromecast according to Google
• With Chromecast, you can easily enjoy your favourite online
entertainment on your HDTV— movies, TV shows, music, and more
from Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus, Google Play Movies, Music,
Chrome etc.
• Chromecast automatically updates to work with a growing number
of apps.
Chromecast according to industry reviews
• Chromecast is Google’s low‐cost answer to TV streaming.
• Chromecast certainly fixes the out‐of‐reach hardware issue by selling
for a rock‐bottom price. If you can plug an HDMI cable into a
television, you can use Chromecast.
• The Google Chromecast is a dirt‐cheap wireless video dongle that
streams Netflix and YouTube to your TV using Android or IOS tablets
as remotes. Its small size hides neatly behind your TV and makes it
easy to take on‐the‐go.

5. Chromecast is not an USB flash drive:
• At first glance, Chromecast could be mistaken for a USB flash drive..
• For those participants, it was very hard to understand that Chromecast
worked wirelessly and even though it “connects” to laptops and mobile
devices, it did not need to be physically connected to those devices.
• mediating this misconception.
To set up your Chromecast you'll need:
• A display device with an HDMI input, for example, a high-definition
television (HDTV)
• Access to an available power outlet or an available (non-service) USB port
on your HDMI-enabled display
• Access to a secure wireless network (make sure you have the wireless
network password handy)
• Connection to a 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi network
• A compatible Android or IOS Smartphone or tablet, or Mac, Windows or
Chromebook computer

7. Compatibility with Devices:
• Tablets: Chromecast is highly compatible with the current generation
tablets and also has backward compatibility with the previous generations
tablets , since the tablets come with the android , windows , IOS as the OS
Google easily provides support applications for the Chromecast activation
and usage.
• Mobile: As the Chromecast is compatible with Tablet, it is highly
compatible with the Smartphone. User just needs to download the
required applications according to the Smartphone platform (windows, ios,
and android) then user can cast the required services from the mobile.
• Laptop: Chromecast easily works with chromebook(A Google provided
notebook for small cloud computing tasks ), it also works great with the
apple Mac, windows X86,64 machines.

8. CHROMECAST DEPLOYMENT
1.Problem statement: The multicast address used by the Chromecast
discovery packets has a TTL (Time To Live) set to 1. Routers cannot use
multicast routing to redirect traffic across L2 subnets because this results in
only link local discovery of Chromecast.
Dept. of ECE 85/1/2015

9. Wi-Fi Considerations
Chromecast devices have a single radio and work on the 2.4 GHz band. So, it is needed to
make sure the SSID that the Chromecast device is connected to is broadcasted on the 11b
radio.
Firewall Considerations
Chromecast discovery packets rely on the DIAL protocol operating at UDP port 1900 and send
the requests to the address 239.255.255.250.

streaming from a browser tab, so it’s
