Root canal treatment is needed when there is deep decay, a leaky filling, trauma, or excessive force during orthodontic treatment. There are several basic principles of endodontic treatment: the dentist diagnoses the problem, educates the patient on the procedure, uses local anesthesia, isolates the tooth with a rubber dam, creates an access cavity, determines the working length, instruments the root canal, fills the root canal, and places a final restoration.
