10. “Rojas Ruggeri experiments with unconventional materials, using metallic screens instead of canvas,
removing the painting from its frame that gives it another presence and weight. This medium invigorates the
language, enriching the pictorial surface with textures, lines and tonalities that are sometimes surprising. It
represents a new visuality that is not only conditioned by the hand that controls its gestures, but also in the
chance where certain physical and chemical reactions interplay between water, pigment, paper and screen.
“Rojas Ruggeri experimenta con materiales no convencionales, usando mallas metálicas en lugar de telas,
para sacar a la pintura del bastidor, y darle otra presencia y espesor. Este soporte vigoriza el lenguaje,
enriqueciendo la superficie pictórica con texturas, marcas y tonalidades a veces sorpresivas. Se trata de una
nueva visualidad que no solo esta condicionada por la mano que controla el gesto, sino también por el azar,
donde entran en juego ciertas reacciones físicos y químicas entre aguas, pigmentos, papeles y enrejados.
Thanks to the exercise of the drawing and maniotic repetition of structures reminiscent
of motors, cylinders and gears, the painter has also created an iconographic repertoire
that barely surface as indications of movement or mechanized tracks.

motores, cilindros y engranaje, el pintor ha generado además un repertorio
icnográfico que surge apenas como indicio de movimiento o huella mecanizada.

11. Combining painted screens in distinct moments, where earthen and oxidized tonalities excel, Rojas Ruggeri
creates an integrated surface with great pictorial, chromatic and material richness. This way, the creator
weaves in texts that represent telluric or geographical movements combined with techno-industrial vestiges
and elements of a contemporary archeology. The surface becomes papyrus, a corroded wall or eroded terrain,
where urban fragments veiledly arise, barely with signs of superposed layers, times and ages. The painting
functions as evidence of the transcourse of human history that is increasingly accelerating.”
Uniendo mallas pintadas en momentos distintos, donde sobresale tonalidades tierra y oxidadas, Rojas Ruggeri crea
una sola superficie de gran riqueza pictográfica, cromática y materia. De este modo, el autor teje un texto que cobra
dimensión telúrica o geológica, funcionando también como vestigio tecno-industrial o como elemento de una
arqueología contemporánea. La superficie se vuelve papiro, muro corroído o terreno erosionado, de donde surgen
fragmentas veladamente urbanos, y apenas los rastros de estratos, tiempos y edades superpuestos. La pintura

74. Vicente Rojas Ruggeri is a contemporary artist who is part of a unique phenomenon that occurred in Chile during the late 80s and
early 90s when a handful of artists from Concepción were able to break through highly centralized barriers in Chile.
Described by critics as a “Magical Alchemist or Wizard,” Vicente has been going through a holistic metamorphosis and
transformation during the past decade.
Vicente Rojas Ruggeri was born in Concepción, Chile in 1964 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts & Education at the University of
Concepción in 1990.
By the time of his graduation, Vicente’s art had already earned critical acclaim in numerous international, national, regional, university and local
competitions and continued to build momentum while remaining in his hometown throughout the rest of the decade.
Prior to graduating, Vicente had won numerous awards, including 1st Place in the Regional Works Category at the “Third National Southern Painting
and Print Competition” and Best Creative Design by the Advertising Association of Concepción. He had also been selected for numerous
exhibitions including the “Second Santiago-Paris University Art Biennial, the “Ninth International Art Biennial of Valparaiso” and Chile’s “First
Annual National Fine Art Competition.”
Within Vicente’s first year out of school, he participated in multiple exhibitions in Santiago’s top galleries and was selected to be shown at France’s
Saise Museum and for the “A Name for Art” exhibition at Chile’s National Museum of Fine Art. During that same year, Vicente also played an
instrumental role in “A Territory for Art,” the first exhibition of live artists to be shown in the University of Concepcion’s Pinacotheca. It yielded the
largest public attendance ever for any exhibition held outside of Santiago.
In November of 1991, Vicente and several other artists from Concepción created the group Grisalla. Their self-named exhibition at the University
of Concepcion’s Pinacotheca was held the same month and followed immediately with Vicente’s first solo exhibition at the University in December.
“Grisalla,” a four city road show exhibition also ran from December of 1991 through September of 1992.
Grisalla’s “Life’s Journeys through Leisure, Craziness and Death” was exhibited in Chile’s National Museum of Fine Art in Santiago in October of
1992. Showcased in the museum’s main gallery, the exhibition generated significant critical acclaim and extensive media coverage. Grisalla was
then selected for the “Department of Education Classified” inaugural exhibition for the Chilean Ministry of Education’s new Gabriela Mistral Gallery
in December of 1992.

75. Vicente’s art was selected the “First Tri-Annual Andean-American International Painting Exhibition” at Chile’s Catholic University, the “Second
Annual Color of the South” competition that was exhibited at Chile’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) prior to touring Peru and Paraguay and
the “Gunther” competition held at Chile’s National Museum of Fine Art in 1993. Vicente also participated in Grisalla’s exhibitions “Small Format,” a
three city road show exhibition that toured through their native Bío-Bío province from August through December, and “Grisalla” at the “Araucano
Hall” in Concepción during the same year.
Santiago’s Tomas Andreu Gallery commissioned all of Vicente’s art for an entire year starting with his participation in the “Grisalla” exhibition in
June of 1994.
In 1994, Vicente also started working with a new medium that was inspired by the discovery of technical drawings that were made by his great-
grandfather upon immigrating to Chile from Italy. The grid layouts for decorative metal castings for wrought iron fences, combined with the
metallurgical roots of both his family and Concepción sparked Vicente’s idea of working with metallic screens.
Solo exhibitions “Vicente Rojas Ruggeri - Paintings” and “Ecos,” both followed in Concepción in July of 1995 and August of 1996, respectively.
Vicente also participated in Grisalla’s “Signs of a Lifetime” exhibition at Santiago’s Matthei Gallery in May of 1997, followed by their “Tradition of
Foolishness” at the Montecantini Gallery in Concepción in November.
In May of 1998, Vicente was invited to participate in the “A Taste of Chile” fundraiser benefit for the Children’s Welfare Association in Seattle,
Washington, in addition to receiving an honorable mention at the “In Situ Competition at the Salto de Laja Waterfalls” in August. Vicente’s art was
also selected for both the “Second National Competition in Concepción” in October and the “University of Concepción Alumni” exhibition held in
November.
The launch of the book “Contemporary Painters from Concepción” and its nine city national road show exhibition in 1999 was symbolic for Vicente
in closing out the decade. In addition to being one of the sixteen artists featured, he was also invited to write the book’s intro and design its cover.
In 2000, Vicente moved to Santiago and participated in international exhibitions that were the first to feature his works that incorporated metallic
screen on canvas. Both exhibitions were held in May, starting with “Arte BA 2000” in Buenos Aires, Argentina, followed by “Grisalla - Chilean
Contemporary Artists” at the Simon Patrich Gallery in Vancouver, Canada.

76. “Layers,” Vicente’s solo exhibition at Santiago’s Praxis Gallery was held in October of 2001, followed by “Vicente Rojas Ruggeri” at the Jorge Sori
Gallery in Coral Gables, Florida in August of 2002.
Two of Vicente’s works were selected for the “Tendances Abstraits” exhibition held at France’s Artitude Gallery in Paris in July of 2003.
Vicente’s solo exhibitions “Unknown Secrets” at the Chilean French Cultural Institute in Concepción in May of 2004 and “Mutation of Time” at
Santiago’s Matthei Gallery in November of 2005 were major milestones in being the first that were entirely comprised of his “full screen” works
that have become his unique signature. After working with metallic screen for nearly a decade, Vicente had transformed metallic screen to the
point where it had completely replaced the canvas itself.
By March of 2006, several of Vicente’s “full screen” works were showcased in the main gallery of Chile’s Museum of Visual Arts (MAVI) at their
“Living in the Valley” exhibition and acquired by the museum for their permanent collection. “Acrylic Creations,” Vicente’s solo exhibition at the
Cabildo, Paraguay’s National Museum of Fine Art, was then held in December of 2006, along with selected works also being shown at the “Artistic
Pairings - An Italian-Chilean Artistic Cultural Exchange” exhibition held at the F. Fellini Theater in Pontinia, Italy.
The following year, Vicente was selected for both the “Learning to Fly” exhibition at Santiago’s La Sala Gallery in April and the “Forth Euro-
American Visual Arts Exhibition” held in at Peru’s Museum of Contemporary Art in Cusco in July of 2007.
2008 started off with selected works of Vicente’s being exhibited at the “If the Earth could Talk” at Santiago’s La Sala Gallery in January. Vicente’s
“full screen” art was then selected for “Latin Perspective: A look at the Latin-American continent,” Luciano Benetton’s and the Itau Foundation’s
jointly sponsored exhibition held at Chile’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) held in April of 2008. As a result, Vicente’s exhibited art was
acquired by the Benetton permanent collection and featured in both the exhibition’s continental road show continuance and book that highlights
key artists from across Latin-America. In July of 2008, Vicente “full screen” works were then exhibited in “Illustrations of the Nonexistent” at the
JHH Fine Art Gallery’s in Riverside, Connecticut in the United States.
Since then, Vicente has been balancing his time between solidifying his national presence in working on endeavors related to Chile’s bicentennial
and expanding his international exposure. This process began with Vicente’s undertaking developing the concept and design of the “Skies of
Columbus,” a major installation commemorating both the discovery of the Americas and Chile’s independence. A symbiotic, iterative set of series
to further develop his artwork followed with Vicente first starting to return to work with canvas and resulted in his series “Red will Never be the
Same” being featured in a solo exhibition at the Colorida Gallery in Lisbon, Portugal in November of 2011. Designs for an installation for his
hometown of Concepción and a series of drawings inspired by these travels ensued, leading to Vicente integrating graphite into his canvas works
“The Absense during the Journey” featured in his solo exhibition at Santiago’s Atrium Gallery in July of 2012. For the next phase, Vicente is
bringing everything together in metallic screen creations.
