Sustainability in the City: Net Positive Business & Experience Design for Sustainability

  • 1. Sally Hill SALLY HILL Founder & Impact Strategist Wildwon Projects @sallyrhill @wildwonprojects

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Hi my name is Sally and I’m going to talk about 3 things today: 1. my story and how it came about that I’m completely preoccupied by sustainability and environmental conservation 2. the concept of net positive business and why I’ve started my own company, Wildwon 3. and finally, how the net positive concept could apply not only to business but also to net positive people and net positive places - like cities or councils First I’m going to take you through a little montage of my high school and young adult life to see where I’ve come from. I’ve never done this before and some things might shock you but here goes!
  2. Yes. Absolutely shocking. Here is a photo from me at high school - what’s that in the back ground? Am I in McDonalds?!?!?! At this point in my life - while some kids were getting up at assembly to talk about coal mining in Newcastle, other people were becoming vegetarian, I was busy thinking about boys, lip gloss and eating burgers apparently. This is me in my uni years - fairly typical I suppose.. boozing.. partying on a boat like an idiot. Living the dream for a 19 year old but not very conscious or meaningful lifestyle. Speaking of meaningless, this is me behind a bar is where I spent my 4 years of my life throughout uni and even afterwards while I did internships. Again not a very healthy or sustainability conscious lifestyle. This is a photo of my brother and I in Japan.. looks innocent but check out that enormous plate of endangered fish species!! I’m pretty sure I can see some blue fin tuna in there. If my friends who work in marine conservation were to see that. So what happened between this and becoming someone who’s whole life is dedicated to environmental sustainability?!
  3. At the end of my degree I decided to do an internship at GetUp! This was the first time I was really exposed to campaigning on serious environmental and social issues. Suddenly I was surrounded by climate change activists, refugee rights lawyers and incredibly talented digital campaigners. But I got really excited by one thing in particular. In 2008 Gunns..
  4. Then I moved to London and it was buzzing with green energy policy and sustainable lifestyle products - and in business circles corporate social responsibility was THE buzz word. I had to get involved. I decided to spend nearly my last 300 pounds doing a masterclass on CSR.
  5. Wayne Visser - runs the business sustainability masters at Cambridge University - he’s a professor and has authored about 5 books on corporate sustainability. From there I interned with Wayne, he became a mentor, I met other inspiring people, I started to pursue a career in corporate sustainability - I started to look at the world differently - more critically. I went from being a food lover to an ethical food choices deliberator I went from feeling good about flying to feeling guilty about going to a carbon dioxide factory aka airport And along the way I started to do and try all sorts of things to try to address this. The best way I could see how was to pursue a career in corporation sustainability - surely these companies who are causing and hiding all of these problems, are also the source of the solution. I worked with some of the biggest energy, food and FMCG companies in the UK and returned to Australia to work with WWF on corporate sustainability.
  6. Then I moved to London and it was buzzing with green energy policy and sustainable lifestyle products - and in business circles corporate social responsibility was THE buzz word. I had to get involved. I decided to spend nearly my last 300 pounds doing a masterclass on CSR.
  7. I’m not going to name names here but this graph reflects the experience I had while working at WWF. This example if from electronics but the same issue is across paper product and food companies. The issue is that for all the gains they’re making in efficiency or so-called sustainability, the companies are growing - with the growth outstripping any sustainability gains. So again without naming, let’s say almost all for-profit companies that are addressing issues with sustainability in their supply chains - such as the management of forests or fish stocks - still wish to sell more of their product every year, in new and existing markets. Some that I have personally worked with are near to causing the extinction of certain species yet are still selling that species as a ‘sustainably certified’ product.
  8. There are other companies, however, who have realised that they can truly start to talk about their contribution when they are regenerative, restorative and the world is better off for them having existed. Interface FLOR - changed their entire business model from selling carpets to servicing modular carpet tile systems so that could absorb every single piece of waste back into their manufacturing. They apply biomimicry principles to their design, to their industrial ecosystem and to their materials - the most important of which is - there is no such thing as waste. They are to be a zero waste and zero emissions company by 2020.
  9. Interface FLOR - Net Effect / Net-Works
  10. Patagonia Net positive business --> regenerative --> biomimicry
  11. I decided that I wanted to be part of the solution not the problem and I couldn’t live with myself if I was working as a ‘sustainability manager’ but really just managing extinction, or managing deforestation.. for example. We’ve set out to prove that you can run a company and not compromise your values. We’re on the road to becoming a certified Benefit Corporation and a business that has a net positive impact And we’re determined to help other net positive companies thrive by helping them build their brands and their communities, using the skills we have. The number and size of these kinds of companies in Australia is small.. but rapidly growing. To us, these are the companies of the future. I really believe that if you want your business to exist in coming years if you will need to be solving a problem (an actual problem) and the idea of causing one just to mop it up again with your company foundation will be ludicrous.
  12. So we started Wildwon.. we design experiences.. real world and digital that create deep positive impact.

  16. We believe that positive change can only be achieved when people have a positive experience of something. Why? Our experience has shown us. But here’s one example that’s not from our experience but from history.
  17. 1 minute In 1903, then President of the United States of America Theodore Roosevelt was taken camping. He spent 3 days and nights in the mountains of the Yosemite Valley. The course of history was changed because a transformational moment was had by this one person. On his return to Washington, Roosevelt created 150 National Parks and more than 50 wildlife reserves and reclamation projects - protecting more than 80 million acres of wilderness. Just imagine where the world would be if we all had a transformational moment like this. At Wildwon, we design experiences that facilitate a-ha moments.. changing the way people make decisions and live their lives. They are the kind of events that we all want to attend, yet they also bring about deep thought, deep connections, lasting change and motivation.

  22. So what I want to leave you with is.. net positive people. And net positive places. Imagine if Leichardt was net positive. If every building was energy positive (meaning it creates more than it uses). If we followed the principles of nature and put in more than we took out from the soil and the air and if we used harmless energy sources like food and our bodies to power our transport. Imagine if we could start to build a network of businesses that made net positive choices for us and were also based locally so that we could know our impact was a good one when we bought our food, our newspaper, our . Imagine if we followed the principle of waste as food and all of our material waste was reused in new products and all of our food was turned into compost to create more food. For me, it’s easy and exciting to imagine this.

  24. Root of the issue is our distance from nature. While we might be far away from having biomimicry in everything.. we can use a design principle known as Biophilia biophilia: green walls the highline (NY) bringing nature / the wild into workplaces, into cities
