In this tutorial you will learn the following:
1. What the Dewey Decimal System is.
2. How it is organized by categories.
1. And how to find a book using the system.
What will I learn?
Introduction
The Dewey Decimal System
is a system libraries use to
make non-fiction books easier
to find.
The Dewey system groups
books into categories.
The Dewey Decimal System
What Is It?
The system was named after a librarian, Melvil
Dewey.
He lived from 1851 to 1931.
Mr. Dewey’s idea has lasted
for 130 years so far around
the world.
Melvil Dewey
What Is It?
I love the
library!
The Dewey system is a numerical system, or one that uses
numbers to organize the books.
The numbers are called call numbers.
A call number is located at the
bottom of the book on the spine.
Organization
The System
You can find the
call number here.
• The general categories for the system are numbered from the
000s to the 900s.
• The system organizes books into 10 major categories.
• Each category has even more categories that get more specific.
Categories
The System
• For example, in the 400 category, which is languages and
grammar, the 460 section includes Spanish and Portuguese
language books.
• The 10 categories are the numbers used on the left of the
decimal point in the call number.

subject.

specific topics.
For example, the Dewey call number for the
baking bread is 641.815.

641.8 – Baking
641.81 – Appetizers
641.815 – Baking Bread

You can look up your topic on a computer in your library.
How to find the right number
Finding a Book
You can browse the shelves,
using the Dewey numbers on
the ends of shelves as your guide.
How to find the right number
Finding a Book
You can ask someone who works at the library to help.

Finding a Book
Once you've got your call number it's time to
go find your book!
Using your number
Finding a Book
When looking for your
book call number on the
shelf:
Look left to right
and
top to bottom.
On the shelves
Finding a Book
• The Dewey system organizes book in the library.
• The system is made up of numbers, so it is a numerical system.
• The system has 10 major categories.
• The numbers are called call numbers.
• The major category number is on the left side of the decimal.
• Books about the same topics are usually on the shelf near each
other.
• You can always get help from the librarian.
Important points
Review
To practice your new skills, try to find the Dewey categories for

Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome to the All About the Dewey Decimal System Tutorial
  2. What will you learn today with this tutorial?First, you will learn what the Dewey Decimal System is and how it got its name.Second, you will learn how it is organized into categories.Third, you will learn how to use the Dewey Decimal System numbers to find a book about a topic that you want in the library.Let’s get started.
  3. The Dewey Decimal System is used in libraries to make it easier to find non-fiction books on the shelves. In the picture here you can see the books have labels with a number on them. The Dewey Decimal System uses the numbers to group books in different categories or topics.
  4. So why do we call the system the Dewey Decimal System? It is named after Melvil Dewey, the librarian who created the system. It has been in use for 130 years.
  5. We already have seen that the Dewey Decimal System is a numerical system. The numbers that you see on the book label are called call numbers. Now, let’s take a look at what those numbers mean.
  6. The numbers are used to tell a person what each book is about and tells a librarian where to put the book on the shelf. The general categories are numbered from the000s to the 900s and there are 10 major categories. Each major category has even more categories to explain more specifically what the topic of each book is.
  7. For example, the 400 category has books about languages and grammar. But more specifically, the 460 category has books about the Spanish and Portuguese languages. When we look at the call number, the three numbers on the left side of the decimal point show the major categories and their sub categories. Here we see the 461 number, which means we have a book about Spanish and Portuguese.
  8. Now let’s take a look at the categories. The first category is the 000s, which includes books about general topics, like encyclopedias and other reference books.
  9. The 100 category includes books about Philosophy and Psychology. You can find books in the 100s about ethics, UFO’s and human nature.
  10. The 200 category includes books on religion. Here you can find books about the Bible, churches, superstitions, and different types of religions.
  11. The 300 category includes books about the Social Sciences and Folklore, like different customs and governments.
  12. The 400 category includes books about language and grammar. Look in this category if you need books about a language or dictionaries in English and other languages.
  13. The 500 category contains books about math and science and covers topics like the weather, dinosaurs, and multiplication.
  14. The 600 category is all about medicine and technology.Look in this category if you want to read about the human body or computers.
  15. The 700 category is all about arts and recreation. If you want to find books about the history of art, how to make yarn crafts, or how to play chess, look in this category.
  16. The 800 category includes books about poetry and plays, like Romeo and Juliet.
  17. The 900 category covers history and geography. If you want to travel to Tanzania or read about Abraham Lincoln, look in the 900s category.
  18. Now that we have looked at the categories, let’s look again at our call numbers. We mentioned earlier that the numbers on the left of the decimal includes our major categories and their sub categories. The numbers on the right of the decimal digs deeper into each category to very specific topics. Let’s look at real-life example.
  19. Here is an example of a the call number for baking bread. We start with the number 641 on the left of the decimal. On the right side of the decimal we see how the topic becomes even more specific. Each time a number is added, the topic gets more specific.
  20. Now that you have learned what the Dewey Decimal System is and how the numbers work, let’s look at how to a call number and a book. One way to find the right number is to look up your topic up on the library computer.
  21. If you want to just browse around the selves, you can look at the end of each row of shelves and see what topics are included on that shelf.
  22. If you need help, you can always ask a librarian or library volunteer.
  23. Once you have a call number, it’s time to go find your book.
  24. The books are shelved numerically. Look at your number and then find the right shelf by looking at the signs posted on the end of the shelves. When looking for your book on the shelf, always look left to right and top to bottom. Just like when you read.
  25.
