Research on the purpose and generic conventions of teaser trailers A trailer is extremely important when marketing a film because it uses its key conventions in order to make the person watching want to go and see the film. The key conventions of a trailer are: ,[object Object],Not showing the story narrative in order showcasing the stars of the film showing visual images on screen for only just enough time for our mind to realize what we are seeing conversations between characters usually consisting of one line each Unusual angles Action is interspersed with credits on screen Voiceovers are used to tell the story and give credit information Music plays an important role in creating atmosphere The title not appear until the end The trailer building to a climax, where it ends Trailer analysis of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows teaser We are not told the name of the film until the last clip, this is because everyone knows what film this is as it is a worldwide phenomenon and so the audience don’t have to have a title to know what film trailer they are viewing, as it is a saga the same characters and same music is used to give audience recognition. Anyone who doesn’t know what film it is is left guessing until the very end and therefore they are more likely to remember the name because they will have already decided whether they want to see it. We are not told who is starring in the film; this is due to the well known characters. The first few shots show characters mainly on their own giving quite an emotional atmosphere which puts across the power of this film. Then you see characters working together, linking to the voice over of ‘you can’t fight this war on your own’, also giving a gamut of emotions making the audience feel nervous about what’s going to happen. The editing then speeds up and lots of things happen all in a short period of time creating tension for the audience as they don’t know what’s going to happen, these clips also highlight the fast paced action of the film and clearly show the action packed movie. All clips are very dramatic but do not allow us to know what exactly is going on, to keep us enticed. The music adds to the dramatic shots and the emotion. Beginning with a slow rhythm of a violin the audience feel emotional, when the editing gets faster the music gets more bass and gets faster paced building tension for a dramatic effect. The audience then recognise the well known theme tune at the end selling the film for what it is, a worldwide phenomenon. The voice over comes from the film itself, the voice is direct and clear and very serious for the audience to understand what he is talking about. All other voices come from parts of the clip and each voice is so well known the audience know who is saying what therefore understanding them, however not much information is given in each clip so that the audience are still guessing. You would expect to see this trailer before most films at the cinema because its target audience is so large you cannot narrow it down to one type of film or age range. Also this movie is a blockbuster production so it will be showing many times in the cinema to promote the intensity of it. Again this trailer would be shown before many TV programmes however it would not be on in a morning or early afternoon even though it does target children it is more likely to be a film that needs parental guidance. Trailer analysis of Little Fockers We are told the name of the film in the second to last clip, this is because this film carries on from previous films and so the audience recognise the characters but they keep guessing what they are going to call this one as the title of the other two films is crucial to the films. We are told who is starring in the film as this is one of the selling points of the film as all the main characters are very well known and most are in the previous movies. The information is given to us with each character having a main clip with their names being shown on the screen, this directly illustrates the characters of the film and clearly establishes the importance of them. The trailer highlights the ‘best bits’ of the film and establishes the genre of the film being a comedy as most clips shown are humorous. The upbeat happy music establishes the light heartedness of the film and the well known Christmas music establishes when the film will be released and the setting of the film. The voice over is quite short and doesn’t give the whole narrative of the film away, it is used to give an introduction to the clip and nothing more. The clips are quite short so that the audience keep guessing as to why certain things are happening and the story behind each clip. The very last clip is just a title of ‘Christmas’ giving us a known time for when the film is released. You would expect to see this trailer before comedy films and family films at the cinema as this is the target audience for the film, it would also be seen before family shows on TV but later on as it has a slightly older age range.
