Genres create and attract audiences as they know what to expect from the film before they
have even seen it. For producers and directors, it means that they have a clear direction for
their film, giving them focus, settings, themes and structure can help guide a film into a genre.
Due to their short content, short films often cross over in their genre.
However, all films stem from the basic forms of genres
- Animation
- Comedy
- Drama
- Horror
- Romance
- Sci-Fi and Fantasy
- Thriller
Short film Directors mainly focuses on producing Romance, Comedy, Drama and Horror
because it has a low budget compared to making sci fi and fantasy short film.

3. COMEDY
Comedy short films are normally light hearted dramas and can be
used to make the audience laugh. Comedy short films always have
happy endings. Another feature of the comedy genre is that it is
usually based on real-life events and issues, making it so popular
as it reaches across society and connects to them in a way some
genres struggle.
PROPS used in comedy films are generally less predictive as it
covers a variety of things, meaning each film produced is unique
for example alcohol is used which can enable the people to be
different and much more humorous
LOCATION can link to props as since alcohol is featured in many
comedies, the locations may be to do with alcohol like pubs, clubs
etc. but mostly the location is in a house
CHARACTERS in comedies usually have a main character and
often a character that provides the majority of the humor
alongside the rest of the group.

4. Romance short films usually a focus of lust, passion,
emotion and excitement. Romance film are love stories
focusing greatly on passion and feelings towards the
two main characters(male and female character) usually
their relationship builds throughout the film. In some
certain circumstances, the film may focus on other
issues such as finances, physical illness or family
problems which may affect the relationship between the
two main character. This usually makes the audience to
follow characters journey.
PROPS and LOCATION fit well together as the
locations tend to be in basic places like their own
homes.
In terms of CHARACTER the two main characters are
generally male and female who have not met each other
before but get to know each other and fall in love.
ROMANCE

5. HORROR
Horror short films are created to scare and terrify the
audience and often play on audiences worst fears.
Horrors focus on the darker side of life and provoke
audiences imaginations to make things worse.
PROPS in horror films includes knives, hammer,
chainsaw and other weapons which are harmful and
inflict pain. The more harmful the weapon is, the more
shock or anxiety it will build within the audience.
LOCATION can include woods, the graveyard etc.
However, films like the scream series have included
places which are not isolated
In terms of CHARACTERS horror films feature an
antagonist which their aim is to cause harm and fear to
the protagonists.

6. DRAMA
Drama often portrays real life situations and based on
people, Drama short film often show humans in their
best of worst light. Also drama can be interlaced with
other genres e.g. comedy, tragedy, action etc. The
purpose is to send subtle message and move the
audience emotionally. The ending of a drama short film
can be positive or negative or have a twist at the end.
PROPS used in drama short film are normal human
equipment.
LOCATION used in drama short film can include
houses, malls, shops it can be anywhere.
CHARACTERS are generally realistic characters e.g.
male or female
