Leadership is something that you need
to define personally. It includes:
everything from vision to personality traits
sensitivity to others
the actions you take
You can demonstrate leadership in big
and small ways throughout your career.

What is the difference?
Leaders provide vision and strategy.
Managers implement the vision and
strategy, coordinate, staff and handle
day to day problems

5. Leadership Theories: Trait Theory
Are leaders born or developed?
Wayne Gretcky vs. Stephen Harper, one grew up as a
leader the other took on leadership roles at a later age.
Certain Traits are associated with leaders:
ambition and energy, desire to lead, honesty and integrity,
self confidence, intelligence, and job-relevant knowledge
Review these from your manual and use them when
you write your journal.

you? CEO’s list these as the most important
traits in descending order:

7. Leadership Theories
One of the most respected is the “Path-Goal”
Theory: where the leaders assist followers in
attaining their common goals.
Direction and support are provided to make sure
goals are compatible with the organization.
This requires linking individual goals with
organizational goals.
Leaders help employees achieve goals and then
reward them for achieving goals (promotions, new
more interesting work etc.).
8. Path-Goal Theory
Different Leadership behaviors are applied to
different environments and different
subordinates to achieve desired outcomes.
The behaviors are:
Directive - lets followers know what is expected.
Achievement - sets goals and expects followers to
perform at their highest levels.
Participative - consults with followers and uses
their suggestions.
Supportive - is friendly and show s concern for his
followers.
9. Leading a Meeting:
Meetings need to be focused with an agenda
and a chair person
All participating need specific roles and
common goals
The atmosphere needs to be Win-Win
There should ideally be a desire for
collaboration that supports the overall needs
of the team while respecting individual needs
