Mental health is an ever increasing concern today. As leaders and teammates we can feel powerless to help those around us suffering from mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Navigating the world of mental health is a treacherous path that can lead you to accomplishing the opposite of your goals, or even ending up with issues of your own. This talk will focus on summarizing a few common mental health issues in the tech / office environment. Giving attendees some tools for recognizing signs, understanding what's going on in their coworkers heads, and being supportive without being intrusive or overbearing. I will also focus heavily on making sure to maintain your own mental heath while trying to help others. I end the talk with a short round table discussion to brainstorm and share ways attendee's have personally dealt with these issues. This talk is for leaders and coworkers that want to be resources for their teams to help them with their mental health and get them up and running again.

“Perspectives: The Golden Years” Program Transcript As you've been learning in this course, we go through various life stages throughout our lives, and the last stage that we enter is known as the elderly stage, the older adult stage, or from Erikson's perspective, developmentally, is the integrity versus ego despair stage. And technically, we reference people who are 65 and above as being part of this older developmental stage. I've had the privilege of working with a number of aging adults. We know that right now about one in six adults in the US is age 60 or older, which means this is a population in need of our help and support. In fact, while people who are aged 60 and older are growing, the population of people available to support them is actually diminishing. In my experience, I've been able to work with folks who have been dealing with end of life issues, meaning they had a terminal illness and were facing an imminent death. I've worked with individuals who were in long term care. I've worked with individuals who have faced retirement and beyond and found a loss of purpose or a sense of needing to find a new avenue for their lives. In the integrity versus ego despair area of life, for example, to use the Erikson's model, we know that people are trying to find their place, purpose, and meaning in life. They are passed their childbearing years. They're passed their employment years, and they're really trying to find a sense of who they are and the legacy that they'll leave. One of the techniques or interventions that you can use with this population is a life review to help them explore, collect, and artifact their memories of their life to place these artifacts in a sense of meaning and perspective that they might even share with their children and grandchildren along the way. Family can be both very supportive and very challenging to the aging client. As a counselor, it's your job to remember who your client is. If your client is the aging individual, that is who you will advocate for and with, and you want to involve them in his decision making process as much as possible. For this particular stage, the aging population, what you really want to focus on is the fact that these are individuals who've led a long and productive life. They do have value and meaning and they have a lot to teach you. It's important to recognize that while they may be in physical or cognitive decline, the spirit of the active and engaged adult is still present. And when you can connect with that spirit, you can find a place to work with your client. Post by Terry Adolescent rebellion In the discussion of adolescent rebellion, it is important to “examine any potential environmental causes or influences of an adolescent’s maladaptive behavior” (Martin, 2014, p. 128). Most adolescents to do not intentionally set out to conduct themselves in antisocial delinquent behaviors; they normally are a result of the environment in which they live and how they react to that environment. For example, if an adolescent has a temperament which is prone to acting out or attention seeking, then he or she may not positively react to a divorce or constant bullying. Further, a child that grows up in a single parent family in a drug infested, poverty stricken neighborhood has a higher probability of engaging in delinquent behavior than a child who grows up in an affluent suburb. The problem intensifies when the adolescent has no outlet in which to express their anger and emotions. Often, these adolescents receive no guidance from home on how to react to stresses in life due to a single parent working multiple jobs in order to make ends meet or because they have no parents. In these instances, it is critical for Christians and the Church to take these troubled adolescents into our fold and instruct them in areas they may not receive instruction by any other means. It is our duty, as stated in James 1:27, to “visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation.” If we, as a Church, were more interested in looking after the fatherless in their communities, we could cut our juvenile delinquent problem in half. Concerning the fatherless and poor, Psalm 81:5 tells us that they walk in darkness without understanding. They need the Gospel brought to them and instructed to them with love and compassion. One of the primary causes of teenage pregnancy is having sex unprotected (Understanding cause and effects of teenage pregnancy, n.d.). Other issues that occur that can bring about teenage pregnancy is drug as well as alcohol use, stressful life, being involved in the wrong crowd, being exposed to violence, living situation as well as financial difficulties (Understanding cause and effects of teenage pregnancy, n.d.). Some other causes are absent parents, lack of knowledge, being abused, being pressured by peers, and seeing pregnancy in the media (Langham, 2014). Before, during, and after pregnancy, teens can experience even more problems. They may have more medical issues when giving birth (Bodeeb, 2014). They may not have anyone to watch their baby once they are born and may experience depression, exhaustion as well as a variety of emotional issues (Bodeeb, 2014). They may have to delay going back and finishing school (Bodeeb, 2014). They may have more financial issues and .

The title “Caregiving for a family member with dementia is fraught with burden and stress” elicits more questions than answers. Who is this caregiver – husband or wife, son or daughter, second husband or wife, stepson or –daughter, daughter- or son-in-law, grandchild – a list with endless variations. Would the experience be different when caring for a mother to that of caring for a father, husband or wife, brother, uncle, aunt, cousin, and nephew? Can the term “caregiver” be considered a singular entity with a singular emotional experience? What is the role of - amongst others - culture, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, language, religion, age, personality, social environment and education? What role does the type of dementia of the care recipient play? Do all people deal with burden and stress in the same way, and if not, why not? What constitutes burden and stress, and how are these defined within the heterogeneous environment of caregiving? It is often said, “If you have met one person with dementia, you have met one person with dementia”. The same might very well apply to the family caregiver. Nolan et al (2002) refer to Dilworth-Anderson and Montgomery & Williams (2001) when saying that “In essence the message is clear – caregiving can only be fully appreciated and adequately supported in its appropriate context”.
