How
does
search
work?
o Android is a Linux-based operating system, designed primarily for
touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.
Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and
later bought in 2005.
o Android is open source. This open source code and permissive licensing
allows the software to be freely modified and distributed. Additionally,
Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps")
that extend the functionality of devices.
o In October 2012, there were approximately 700,000 apps available for
Android.
o Android had a worldwide smartphone market share of 75% during the
third quarter of 2012, with 750 million devices activated in total and 1.5
million activations per day.
o Google provides major updates to Android every six to nine months,
which most devices are capable of receiving over the air. The latest
major update is Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
o On August 15, 2011, Google made its largest-ever acquisition to-date
when announced that it would acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5
billion. This purchase was made in part to help Google gain
Motorola's considerable patent portfolio on mobile phones and
wireless technologies to help protect it in its ongoing patent disputes
with other companies, mainly Apple and Microsoft and to allow it to
continue to freely offer Android.
DEVICES
 HTC Dream,
first device to
run Android.

first tablet. 
 Galaxy Nexus.
Nexus 4. 
 Ads!!!
 Using technology from the company
DoubleClick, Google exposes highly
relevant texts, images, animations or
videos Ads to the user.
 When the user clicks on sponsored links
or Ads, Google charges its client.
 Google's AdWords allows advertisers to
display their advertisements in the
Google content network, through either
cost-per-click or cost-per-view scheme.
The sister service, Google AdSense,
allows website owners to display these
advertisements on their website and
earn money every time ads are clicked.
 In 2011, 96% of Google's revenue was
derived from its advertising programs.
 The corporation has been estimated to run more than one million servers in
data centers around the world.
 In May 2011, the number of monthly unique visitors to Google surpassed 1
billion.
 24 petabytes of user data is generated each day.
 In 2006, “google” was added to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary
and the Oxford English Dictionary, as a verb.
 In December 2012 Alexa listed google.com as the most visited website in
the world.
 In January 2013, Google announced it had earned $50 billion in annual
revenue for the year of 2012.
 Fortune magazine ranked Google as number one on its 100 Best
Companies To Work For list for 2012.
 Within next year, Google’s storage capacity could reach 1 exa-byte, the
same as 50,000 years of DVD quality video.
