This past year has gone quickly and I am amazed by everything you all have accomplished during your time here. I am looking forward to seeing you on our trip to Lutherwood Camp and Retreat on June 17!Since we know time can move quickly, I want to encourage you all to begin planning now for your return home in August. Your adviser will be contacting you with information about your specific return dates and flight information soon. They will also have advice for you about graduation, packing, how much luggage you will be able to take with you and other things you need to do before you return home.Sarah and I will also be visiting each campus in July to meet with you about your future plans. We will help you develop an electronic portfolio so that you have a way to highlight all of the things you have accomplished during your time in the United States. We will also talk to you about ways to prepare for returning home and ways to stay in touch with the program.Enjoy the rest of your time here. I encourage you to try to squeeze in another trip (or two) before you leave. This is a big country and there are many places to explore!Read on for news updates and program highlights.Best wishes,Amanda (From left): Sultana, Dr. Robin Datta, Director Edcc Honors Program, Walters, Siti, and EDCC President Jean Hernandez. The following students were recently honored in an induction ceremony for membership to the prestigious Phi-Theta-Kappa national honor society: Sultana Doulat (Pakistan); Siti Suprapti (Indoniesa); Walters Tawke Feh (Cameroon); Vanitha Selveraj (India); Laxmi Prakash (India); Emmanual Mofor (Cameroon); and Wafik Ramsis Sawires (Egypt). To be invited as member, students have to have the required number of credits and a 3.5 cumulative college-level GPA.Sultana remarks on the privilege in becoming a member: quot; It is something that will benefit me in the long run. I love to take leadership roles and this will boost my confidence and will provide me with more opportunities to participate in different programs actively.“ Friends cheer as Sajjad represents international students in accepting an esteemed award.Sajjad Tariq received the Outstanding Student of the Year award on May 25th at Pierce College. According to Tanya, Pierce College’s student adviser, students are nominated by faculty for their outstanding academic skills, work ethic, perseverance, and integrity.Sajjad feels the award belongs not only to him, but to the entire NWCCI program. He is grateful to all his peers, instructors and advisers for their support. What advice does he have for future NWCCI students? quot; Be positive and ready to accept challenges. Take part in social activities andgive proper time to your studies.quot; And the winner is....Congratulations to the 6 former NWCCI Egyptian students whose proposal, Youth Empowerment: Promoting Democracy in Egypt through University Student Leaders, won the Alumni Engagement Initiative Fund contest. Student participants were Ahmed Aly, Ahmed Afifi, Amr Degady, Hamada El-shafei, Mahmoud Abd El Raziq, and Karem Arafa. Their team included 38 of 638 applicants chosen for a $35,000 grant to implement thier proposal idea.Your paricipation in the NWCCI program automatically makes you eligible for membership to the State Alumni Website, the platform the winners used to apply for the winning proposal. If you haven't already, SIGN UP so that when the time comes to get involved you'll be ready!A Friendly ReminderAccording to the NWCCI program Terms and Conditions, students CANNOT travel with-in the United States after their program end date and must return to their home country on the flight scheduled by the program. Under J-1 visa regulations, participants who have completed their program are required to live in their home country for two years before they may apply for a U.S. work or residence visa. If you plan to return to the United States on a work or residence visa in the future we recommend that you begin documenting your time at home as soon as you arrive by collecting utility bills, pay stubs, etc. We understand this is a confusing topic. If you have questions, please contact Amanda Fletcher at amanda.fletcher@edcc.edu.Special kudos go to Stephanus for designing our new NWCCI logo. Thanks to his design, we continue to strengthen the brand of our growing program. Opportunities like this abound on campus and in the community - it's not too late to get involved this summer! From left (back row): Sami, Wafik, Mahmoud, Amira, Pelizat, Tamer (Front row): Mahabba, Eunice, Mohammed, EmmanuelWhatcom students from Turkey, Cameroon, Pakistan, Egypt, and Ghana presented in the May 18 campus event Cultures in Transition. In it, they answered a range of questions about their countries with an emphasis on changes that their cultures are undergoing. Mary Mele, student adviser at Whatcom, reflected on the experience saying it was a successful, stimulating evening. quot; The students did a great job facilitating dialogue from different perspectives, quot; she added. quot; All their effort paid off!quot; Find out more by watching the video.Award for ArtStephanus Hartanto submitted the graphic above for Pierce College's 2011 edition of the Student Literary Arts Magazine (SLAM). Stephanus's photograph quot; A Day in the Secret Gardenquot; and Faiza Iqtadar's photograph quot; Dog Collage' were selected entries.According to Pat Cavendish, International Student Department Director, only 20% of the 500 submissions are published. Way to go, guys!Be the Spark!Archbishop Desmond Tutu, renowned activist for human rights and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, inspired individuals in the Be the Spark Movement, an initiative by the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation that took place on May 13 in the Tacoman dome. A large group students from Edmonds and Pierce colleges attended the lecture where they learned about the root causes of violence and ways to foster hope and respect in communities.Mohammed Hassan, a student from Edmonds, took this message from the evening: quot; Change yourself and be the change that you want to see in the world. Be the spark and make the world a better place.quot; New Students ComingThe NWCCI program is proud to welcome forty new students to the 2011-2012 school year. A small cohort from Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan, Indonesia and Ghana are scheduled to arrive to their respective schools in June; in August the remainder of the participants - coming from Panama, Costa Rica, Kenya, South Africa, and India - will arrive. Can you believe only a year ago that was you? Imagine how calming it would have been to receive an email from a NWCCI alumni who speaks your language. Ask your adviser how you can help - they'll find a way to put you to work!friend on Facebook | visit our Website Copyright © *2011* *Edmonds Community College* All rights reserved. Our mailing address is:20000 68th Avenue WestLynnwood, WA 98036For more information please contact Sarah Kishpaugh at sarah.kishpaugh@edcc.edu unsubscribe from this list
Sent to <
> — why did I get this? unsubscribe from this list | update subscription preferences Edmonds Community College ISS · 20000 68th Avenue West · Lynnwood, Washington 98036
