  2. To understand Web 2.0 and its significance you have to know what the internet was before it was a web 2.0 internet.
  3. Prior to Web 2.0 you were a passive observer when it came to the internet. You could search, get information and read it. That is all.
  4. With Web 2.0 you are now able to interact with the internet. You are no longer a passive observer. Wikipedia is a perfect example: it is the world’s largest encyclopedia and is created by people like you and me. I could go on today and create a page for my school and it would be published to the interesting until someone else decided to add to or change what I had published.If you have used Google Maps, then you have used web 2.0 technology. You are able to interact with the page, change your route and manipulate it so that it works best for you. That was not an option prior to Web 2.0.
  5. So why does this all matter? What is the point of including Web 2.0 into our instruction?I am sure that many of you have seen the cute PPT shows that tell us that our students send over 2,000 text messages in a month and that the average student spends 2-3 hours on the internet every day and that does not include the amount of time also spend watching TV. All of these facts influence who we are teaching. There was a question posted online that asks, are students turning off their best learning when they go to school? At home if a child has a question, they go to the internet and can have it answered immediately. They could ask 100 questions in an hour and have them all answered right away.How many questions do they get to ask in your classroom? How many times are you able to answer all of the questions? We want our students to continue to be inquisitive and engaged in what they are learning and the use of Web 2.0 technology is one way to help with that.
  6. But, do not think that we are using technology for the sake of technology. It is not about what is fun and interesting, that just happens to be an added benefit.It is about enhancing or improving what we already do in class. If you have students make a poster, why not try a digital version. If you have students journal or respond to reading in the text or a novel, why not have them blog online instead of on paper. We are not adding more to do, just suggesting small alterations to what you already do.
  7. Now don’t start thinking that teachers are going to be replaced by computers and that this new interactive technology is going to put you out of a job!Students still need us to teach them how to navigate the internet. So while they may have 100 questions, do they know which websites are going to give them the most reliable information, or the difference between a .com and a .govThey still need to be taught how to analyze content, something that we do in our classrooms but now instead of always using the text book some of that might be on the internet.They also need to be taught ethical use, because while there are many parents who are vigilant about their child’s internet use, there are just as many who are not. They need to know that what they put out in cyber space will be there forever.
