Definition of steam turbine 
A steam turbine is a device that extracts thermal 
energy from pressurized steam and uses it to do 
mechanical energy on a rotating output shaft.
Types of steam turbine 
 HP(High Pressure ) Turbine 
 IP(Intermediate Pressure )Turbine 
 LP(Low Pressure) Turbine
HIGH PRESSURE STEAM TURBINE 
• Steam first strikes on guide blades carrier and then HP rotor. 
• Single flow casing 
• Double shell casing 
• Inner casing and outer casing 
• Main steam pressure : 247 ATA 
• Main steam temperature: 505 °C 
• Number of stages 19
Rotor of HP Turbine 
• It is made of mild steel.
Casing of HP Turbine 
 There are two types of casing in HP steam turbine. 
 Inner casing which is made of mild steel . 
 Inner casing which covers rotor and protects leakage 
 Outer casing cover whole rotor and inner casing arrangement .
Blades of HP Turbine 
• Blades of HP steam turbine is made of steel alloys 
• HP blades are the smallest blades of the steam turbine 
• It is made on the special types of CNC machine which 
works in 5-axises
Intermediate pressure turbine 
 IP steam turbine is a double flow turbine 
 Double casing (inner and outer ) 
 Steam pressure 54 ATA 
 Steam temperature 593°C
Rotor of IP Turbine 
 It is made of mild steel. 
 IP rotor is in different shape.
Blades of IP Turbine 
 IP blades are made of steel alloys. 
 The shape of IP blades are different from the HP 
blades. 
 IP blades are larger than HP blades.
Casing of IP turbine 
 There are two types of casing in IP turbine. 
 Inner and outer casing . 
 Casings are made of cast iron.
low Pressure Turbine 
 Double flow. 
 Double shell casing. 
 Single admission from top half. 
 Outer casing and condenser rigidly connected.
Rotor of LP turbine 
 It is made of mild steel. 
 It is heavier than HP and IP Turbine.
Casing of LP turbine 
 Two types of casing inner casing and outer casing. 
 Casing material is cast iron.
Blades of LP Turbine 
• Blades are made of steel alloys. 
• Smaller blades of LP turbine are made in three spindle 
five axis CNC machine. 
• Blades of LP is the largest among the other turbine blades.
Over speeding of turbine rotor 
 Turbine rotor is tested on the over speed balancing 
tunnel 
 Balancing speed -180 to 3600 rpm 
 Maximum caccum-1 torr 
 Minimum vibration limit-1 micron
Governing system 
 Governing system controls the steam flow to the 
control signals. 
 Steam turbine is equipped with high pressure 
governing systems.
Conclusions 
 Turbine is capable of long term reliable operation. 
 Quick start up and load changes. 
 Operational flexibility 
 Continuous information on residual turbine life
