As teams embrace DevOps, quality becomes a bottleneck for rapid development and delivery. Traditional QA practices of functional testing release candidates are not cutting it in this new era of lightning fast development. Teams are finding that they need to test early and often to rapidly surface error during development to reach continuous delivery. Learn how to implement E2E testing at the earliest stages of development: from initial code commit, to pull requests with ephemeral environments, and high confidence merges. This practice optimizes DevOps software development by enabling developers to solve issues earlier, proactively update tests (so they don’t break later) and become even more productive. Join mabl software engineer Joe Lust to hear how the mabl team puts these ideas into practice daily and how it has benefited their team and product. Additionally, you will learn about: Impact of DevOps on testing Benefits of testing earlier in development Best practices of how mabl does this at mabl

Slides for the talk given at the Barcelona Front-End Development Meetup on January 31st, 2018. In the real world, where full rewrites of big production apps are nearly impossible, migrating your frontend framework can become a very painful journey both for the team and for the company roadmap if not done right. In this talk, Santi, CTO of Edpuzzle, will explain how the company is going about progressively migrating a large production application while enjoying writing React/Redux code in isolation as if it was a brand new codebase. All of it, while still maintaining and communicating with the legacy Backbone/Marionette application, while doing a website redesign and while rebranding. The talk will go deep into problems such as how to tackle frontend routing in Backbone and React at the same time, how to make sure styling remains consistent between the modern and legacy applications during the redesign, how to keep the production bundle small while using two different frameworks and much much more.

The Graphical Editing Framework (GEF) enables developers to create client-side rich graphical editors based on existing domain models. Eclipse's GEF has a steep learning curve, and at times it can be difficult to understand even for developers fully accustomed to it. There are a number of technical challenges associated with using GEF that developers should be aware of and know how to handle. We discuss difficulties that GEF developers face, and we enumerate ways to overcome them. Topics include using GEF correctly, implementing features not provided by the framework, and avoiding misuses of GEF that result in errors and bugs. In particular we present thoughts on MVC logic separation, the role of edit policies, customized layouts and graphical techniques, and potential threading concerns. The tips and insights provided by this talk are useful for both new and experienced GEF developers. See http://www.architexa.com/labs#gef for more information on our work.

Oracle's Hyperion Smart View product enables business users to access data/metadata/shared content from Microsoft Excel with relative ease. With that said, the product does have a few gaps that can lead to end user confusion, inefficient operation, and migration/upgrade challenges. This presentation will walk you through ways to improve Smart View document robustness through the implementation of basic VBA / Smart View API scripts. Deployment guidance is also provided which not only covers automated product installation but deployment of default settings and connections. Finally scripts are provided to greatly ease the transition from the Essbase Add-In product to Smart View.

Experimenting on Humans’ (or, ‘everything you want from an a/b testing system’). How do you know what 100 millions users like? Wix.com is conducting hundreds of experiments per month on production to understand which features our users like and which hurt or improve our business. At Wix we have developed our 3rd generation experiment system called Petri, which was open sourced. Petri helps us maintain some order in a chaotic system that keeps changing. We will also explain how it works and what are the patterns in conducting experiments that have a minimal effect on performance and user experience.

Single Page Applications have gained tremendous popularity over the past few years and have prompted the creation of several frameworks to support their development. Unlike traditional web applications, most of the heavy lifting for SPA happens on the client side in your web browser. These applications rely on hundreds of lines of JavaScript coupled with asynchronous web service calls to provide a desktop-like experience that is accessible from virtually any device. Join Principal Architect, Jeremy Likness, to learn more about SPA, including how to determine when you should choose this approach, how SPA compares and contrasts with traditional server-based approaches including ASP.NET WebForms and MVC, and what frameworks and tools (such as jQuery, AngularJS, and Aurelia) make building SPA easier. Discover how single page applications powered by HTML5 and JavaScript transform your browser into a web-based operating system.

This deck represents our current thinking about the best way to build enterprise SaaS software in 2015 - using a variety of techniques from several disciplines. Since I wrote this I have also become very interested in resilience engineering and the notion that web developers are primarily engaged in the construction of socio-technical systems. When I rewrite this I plan to talk about how we should try to minimize mean-time-to-recover (MTTR) instead of mean-time-between-failures (MTBF), and how continuous deployment grows a safety culture around your operations. I redacted most of the examples that illustrate these points because they use sensitive code examples or URLs. If you want to see the rest of slides, join us!

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. About authorWith two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Discover how Victor can help you on victorrentea.ro : company training catalog, consultancy and YouTube playlists.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe.
