MongoDB is one of the most popular databases these days and there are a few reasons for such popularity. One of these reasons is the excellent integration with different programming languages and development frameworks. In the case of Python we take it a few notches up (native use of dictionaries, integration with asynchronous libraries (twisted, gevent), good support for web frameworks like django, flask, bottle ... (mongoengine anyone?). This talk is about the several different projects that we support, the way to effectively use Python and MongoDB together and a few other improvements and announcements.

MongoDB replication internal architecture for 2.8 Abstract: Replication in MongoDB requires deep integration with almost every part of the codebase, and has important hooks in various systems like storage, indexing, command processing and querying. Most of the replication components have seen a major overhaul recently in order to make further improvements. In this talk we will address what those pieces are, how they interact, and interesting choices made during their design. In this talk we get into the interaction of the replication protocols, commands really, writes and write concern enforcement, consensus (elections/ leader/follower/ majority) behaviors, and down into the depths of oplog generation and application on replicas. While a large part of the talk will be a technical overview of the big pieces we will dive into many important areas in order to ensure better understanding. The audience will be able to greatly affect which areas we focus on during the session, so come with ideas and a focus.

So, maybe you’ve been working with MySQL for a while and are now being asked to also properly maintain one or more MongoDB instances. It is not uncommon that MySQL DBAs, developers, network/system administrators or DevOps folks with general backgrounds, find themselves in this situation at some point in time. In fact, with more organisations operating polyglot environments, it’s starting to become commonplace. With that said, we’d like to introduce a new webinar series: ‘How to Become a MongoDB DBA’ to answer the question: ‘what does a MongoDB DBA do’? In the space of three webinars, we will walk you through the most important tasks a MongoDB DBA routinely goes through and provide you with options on how to best complete these tasks. In this initial webinar of the series, we will go beyond the deployment phase and show you how you can automate tasks, how to monitor a cluster and how to manage MongoDB; whilst also automating and managing your MySQL and/or PostgreSQL installations. Agenda Introduction to becoming a MongoDB DBA Installing & configuring MongoDB What to monitor and how How to perform backups Live Demo Speaker Art van Scheppingen is a Senior Support Engineer at Severalnines. He’s a pragmatic MySQL and Database expert with over 15 years experience in web development. He previously worked at Spil Games as Head of Database Engineering, where he kept a broad vision upon the whole database environment: from MySQL to Couchbase, Vertica to Hadoop and from Sphinx Search to SOLR. He regularly presents his work and projects at various conferences (Percona Live, FOSDEM) and related meetups.

In the world of big data, legacy modernization, siloed organizations, empowered customers, and mobile devices, making informed choices about your enterprise infrastructure has become more important than ever. The alternatives are abundant, and the successful Enterprise Architect must constantly discern which new technology is just a shiny object and which will add true business value. MongoDB is more than just a great application database for developers; it gives Enterprise Architects new capabilities to solve previously difficult architectural requirements much more easily. Take for example the challenge of many siloed systems at MetLife – with MongoDB, the Metlife team was able to successfully provide a single view into those 70 systems, in only 3 months. In this webinar, we will: Explore real life challenges enterprises face with case studies of their solutions Consider how best to introduce MongoDB in the enterprise Give an overview of how to optimize the use of MongoDB

This tutorial will introduce the features of MongoDB by building a simple location-based application using MongoDB. The tutorial will cover the basics of MongoDB’s document model, query language, map-reduce framework and deployment architecture. The tutorial will be divided into 5 sections: Data modeling with MongoDB: documents, collections and databases Querying your data: simple queries, geospatial queries, and text-searching Writes and updates: using MongoDB’s atomic update modifiers Trending and analytics: Using mapreduce and MongoDB’s aggregation framework Deploying the sample application Besides the knowledge to start building their own applications with MongoDB, attendees will finish the session with a working application they use to check into locations around Portland from any HTML5 enabled phone! TUTORIAL PREREQUISITES Each attendee should have a running version of MongoDB. Preferably the latest unstable release 2.1.x, but any install after 2.0 should be fine. You can dowload MongoDB at http://www.mongodb.org/downloads. Instructions for installing MongoDB are at http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/installation/. Additionally we will be building an app in Ruby. Ruby 1.9.3+ is required for this. The current latest version of ruby is 1.9.3-p194. For windows download the http://rubyinstaller.org/ For OSX download http://unfiniti.com/software/mac/jewelrybox/ For linux most users should know how to for their own distributions. We will be using the following GEMs and they MUST BE installed ahead of time so you can be ahead of the game and safe in the event that the Internet isn’t accommodating. bson (1.6.4) bson_ext (1.6.4) haml (3.1.4) mongo (1.6.4) rack (1.4.1) rack-protection (1.2.0) rack shotgun (0.9) sinatra (1.3.2) tilt (1.3.3) Prior ruby experience isn’t required for this. We will NOT be using rails for this app.

Speaker: Joseph Fluckiger, Senior Software Architect, ThermoFisher Scientific Level: 200 (Intermediate) Track: Atlas Mass spectrometry is the gold standard for determining chemical compositions, with spectrometers often measuring the mass of a compound down to a single electron. This level of granularity produces an enormous amount of hierarchical data that doesn't fit well into rows and columns. In this talk, learn how Thermo Fisher is using MongoDB Atlas on AWS to allow their users to get near real-time insights from mass spectrometry experiments – a process that used to take days. We also share how the underlying database service used by Thermo Fisher was built on AWS. What You Will Learn: - How we modeled mass spectrometry data to enable us to write and read an enormous about of experimental data efficiently. - Learn about the best MongoDB tools and patterns for .NET applications. - Live demo of scaling a MongoDB Atlas cluster with zero down time and visualizing live data from a million dollar Mass Spectrometer stored in MongoDB.

Presented by Austin Zellner, Solutions Architect, MongoDB Schema design is as much art as it is science, but it is central to understanding how to get the most out of MongoDB. Attendees will walk away with an understanding of how to approach schema design, what influences it, and the science behind the art. After this session, attendees will be ready to design new schemas, as well as re-evaluate existing schemas with a new mental model.

In this workshop we will deploy a pre-built Node website to Heroku, then hook it up to an mLabs MongoDB instance. We will then use both the Mongo Shell and a GUI based app to import and export data, save and modify documents, and run queries. Finally, we'll use our knowledge of Mongo queries to create a RESTful api for the Node app. This is a workshop designed for experienced JavaScript developers. You must already be familiar with the following: JavaScript, Git, using a programming editor, running commands from the terminal, and launching a web server on your own machine.

moma-django is a MongoDB manager for Django. It provides native Django ORM support for MongoDB documents, including the query API and the admin interface. It was developed as a part of two commercial products and released as an open source. In the talk we will review the motivation behind its developments, its features and go through 2-3 examples of how to use some of the features: migrating an existing model, advanced queries and the admin interface. If time permits we will discuss unit testing and south migrations. During this talk we'll navigate through a customer's journey as they migrate an existing MongoDB deployment to MongoDB Atlas. While the migration itself can be as simple as a few clicks, the prep/post effort requires due diligence to ensure a smooth transfer. We'll cover these steps in detail and provide best practices. In addition, we’ll provide an overview of what to consider when migrating other cloud data stores, traditional databases and MongoDB imitations to MongoDB Atlas.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. About authorWith two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe.
