Four and fully describe that theory and how that theory may apply to something in
your life or the lives of others. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in
length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other
scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of

Critical Thinking. Consider the content of Week One and submit a paper which
contains the following:

Unique Defenses. Select one of the unique defenses sometimes raised to
absolve defendants of criminal responsibility. Explain your choice completely and
provide an example. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length.

Battered Wife Syndrome. Battered wife syndrome is a controversial issue.
Courts have ambivalence in the rulings regarding whether it can be an “insanity”
plea or not. Assume a position on one side of the issue, either “temporary
insanity” or “sane and can stand trial.” Explain the position and provide an
example. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your
claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources,
and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’
posts by Day 7.
Article Analysis. Read and analyze the article titled Effects of Serious Mental
Illness and Substance Abuse on Criminal Offenses. Within the article summary
and analysis, include the following:
a. Describe the key components of the research project: who conducted the
research, the focus of the project, and how the research project was completed.
b. Examine the findings or conclusions of the research project.
c. Evaluate the contributions stemming from the research project in relation to the
study of criminal behavior (findings that may have been made to new information
on the topic area or applications).

Community Interview Summary. Complete the Community Career Interview
Activity as outlined in your written assignment for this week. Post the “Summary”
section of the activity in this discussion. Respond to at least two of your
classmates’ posts by Day 7.
Community Career Interview Activity. The purpose of the community interview
is to assist the student in the Criminal Justice program of study in developing a
sense of community collaboration. For this assignment, interview a Criminal
Justice professional who works and provides services in a community
environment. Through the interview report and summary, students will:
a. Demonstrate a community perspective through the submission of a written
report of an interview with an individual in your community who works
collaboratively with criminal justice professionals.
b. Acquire knowledge of a community support service/agency providing service
interventions for residents from using primary prevention, secondary interventions
(for example, drug treatment, domestic abuse counseling, etc.) and/or tertiary
prevention.
c. Synthesize the major outcome of the community interview as evidenced by a
summary presentation to the course discussion board. Respond constructively to
one other student’s summary post
Interview Suggestions:
Director/Manager of a community agency providing prevention, intervention or
correction programs or activities. Examples include DARE, school crime
prevention programs, truant officers, clergy, drug treatment program personnel,
judges, juvenile specialists, programs to reduce recidivism rates of correctional
services, or other appropriate individuals.

paper is intended to challenge the learner to explore current research that
focuses on the cognitive aspects of criminal offenders by delving into their
perceptions, reasoning, beliefs, decision making, and attitudes.
