19. IBM Cognos Mobile Installation
Details
• Server Installation
- IBM Cognos Mobile is installed separately into IBM
Cognos BI. Mobile requires the last release of BI
- Application Tier and Gateway Tier components. Gateway
tier includes mobile clients such as BlackBerry
- Each instance of Presentation Service (PS) currently
needs to be co-located with an instance of the Mobile
Service (MOB)
- Participates in standard load-balancing
19
20. IBM Cognos Mobile Installation
Details
• Client Installation
- iPad Application must be installed from Apple’s
App Store
- BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Symbian clients
can be installed by:
• Pushing the application via BlackBerry Enterprise
Server or other MDM
• Pulling the application by clicking on an install link in
the device‟s browser
• Sideloading the application to a tethered device
through a desktop manager
20
21. IBM Cognos Mobile Security Model
• Leverages Cognos security: namespaces, users (e.g. AD,
LDAP)
• Supports web/app server security: TLS/SSL, NTLM,
Kerberos, SiteMinder, etc.
• Communication is standard HTTP and works with
standard network security: VPNs, TLS/SSL, secure WiFi, etc.
• Benefits from device security: PIN password, application
sandboxing, OS storage encryption, etc.
• IBM Cognos Mobile provides an additional “lease key”
mechanism to allow time-limited access to data while offline
21
22. IBM Cognos Mobile Security Strategies
• Consider enforcing security policy on mobile devices (e.g. PIN
password) via MDM software or policy files
• How will your mobile devices get access to the BI server?
(Intranet WiFi only, VPN over 3G, BI server in DMZ, etc.)
• Ensure that communication “over the wire” meets security
requirements (e.g. VPN, TLS/SSL, secure WiFi, client certs, etc.)
• Determine whether additional device management is needed, e.g.
remote wipe, and if so then how to get it, e.g. BES, Apple
MDM, etc.
• Tune parameters on the server: local storage encryption; length
of time to cache credentials (BB only); length of time to allow
offline access.access to data while offline
22
23. IBM Cognos Mobile Authoring
• Does this mean we need to develop content specifically for
Mobile consumers?
- MAYBE:
• IBM Cognos supports “author once, consumer
anywhere”, which means all existing reports, queries,
analyses, and workspaces are valid objects to be
consumed by Mobile users
• However, we have to consider our audience and
device limitations when rolling out a broad Mobile
strategy
- SO: Plan and allocate resources intelligently
23
24. IBM Cognos Mobile Authoring -
Active Reports
• Active Reports are an effective way to deliver
content to Mobile users
- Active Reports have built-in interactive features allowing
interactivity without making additional “trips” from device
to server, providing instantaneous response
- The Active Reports can reside on the device for
disconnected access
- New Active Report controls in Report Studio are designed
specifically for iPad interface (Iterator controls support
“swipe” gestures)
24
25. IBM Cognos Mobile Access Points
• Consumers can access the Mobile IBM Cognos
portal via web browser:
- http://<Cognos Server>/c10.1.1/m/
• iPad Consumers can also download the native app
and connect to the BI Server
• Report owners can schedule delivery to mobile
users
