2. Early Life
Amelia Earhart was born to Edwin and Amy
Earhart on July 24, 1897 in Atchison,
Kansas.
At 11 years old, Amelia saw her first airplane
which was the first successful plane the
Wright brothers flew.
3. Education
When Amelia graduated high school,
she went to the Ogontz School
in Pennsylvania.
Amelia took college courses in New York City at
Columbia University and Barnard College.
In college, she prepared to study medicine, but
decided to study medical research instead.
When Amelia was 24, she took her first flying
lesson and bought her first airplane.
4. Adult Life/Career
Amelia became the first accompanied woman
in the world to fly across the Atlantic Ocean
in 1928. She later wrote magazine articles
about her trip.
In 1931, she married George P. Putnam who
was also her publisher and manager.
Finally, in 1932, she became the first woman
to fly solo across the Atlantic
Ocean.
5. Accomplishments
Amelia was the first person to fly from
Hawaii to California on January 11, 1935.
On April 19, 1935 she was the first person to
fly from Los Angeles to Mexico City.
Amelia was the second person and first
woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.
6. Impact on the World
Amelia inspired women across the world to
try to do things that men have tried.
Amelia risked her life to prove that women
were up to the challenge.
Amelia was called the “First Lady of the Air”.
7. Death
While trying to fly across the World, she
disappeared on July 3, 1937 somewhere in
the Pacific Ocean.
Amelia’s remains and wreckage were never
found.
