The miracle of Lazarus' resurrection occurred in Bethany near Jerusalem during the winter before Passover. When Lazarus became ill, his sisters Mary and Martha sent Jesus a message that "the one you love is sick." Though Jesus waited two days before going to Bethany, he used the opportunity to teach his disciples and strengthen their faith. Both Martha and Mary expressed disappointment that Jesus did not prevent Lazarus' death, but Martha declared her belief that Jesus could ask God for anything. Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus and called him forth from death, removing the barrier of death and demonstrating his power over it.
