Podcasts are the new phenomenon of professional and homemade media broadcasts available on the Internet. Podcasting is a form of one-to-many media distribution. As such, it could be called a broadcast. Initially, podcasts were mostly MP3 format audio shows listened to on a computer, but when the iPod began to support mobile access to the content, it also became common practice to transfer the media to the iPod for portable anywhere, anytime access. Almost all podcast are free, with just a few having inline ads.The low technical barrier and low cost to publish in this medium is the reason that over 125,000 podcast series have been published in iTunes alone. Content can be accessed from the PC or a portable MP3 player.The concept of an aggregator such as iTunes is central to understanding the medium of podcasting. Find, subscribe, manage, and access content in one interface. Your library of podcast episodes is automatically updated with new content. Audio content is the most popular format for podcast content. The reason is that in combination with the iPod, one can take advantage of what might otherwise be “down time.” Driving, mowing the lawn, or washing dishes can all be opportunities to learn and be enlightened by the latest podcast show. Obviously, media based learning can also help for those who benefit from alternatives to reading visually.And again, it is important to understand the contribution of making all this new content efficiently available in one personal library.Podcasting is another example of how the Internet is democratizing the process of mass communication. Note that “subscribing” to a podcast simply means you have added it to your list of automatically updated podcast series in your personal library. This is a large download and will require a school Ethernet connection, cable, or DSL at home. You will need to have admin access to your computer. Because the library will have your personal podcast selections, it does not work well to have your iTunes library shared by multiple people. Install on a CPU assigned to just you. It is possible to have different user accounts on the same CPU and this will keep the libraries separate. Mac users can just select Software Update under their Apple menu and opt to install the latest iTunes and QuickTime.Windows users can install from the URL listed.
