Elements of pop culture like films, books, media, religion, sports, and tourism influence language as they help spread and popularize cultures. 3. INTRODUCTION
What is pop-culture?
Those ideas, perspectives, attitudes, and other phenomena in a
particular society that is well known and popular to most ordinary
people in that society can be described as pop-culture.
The aim of studying pop-culture is to know the importance for the
lives of ordinary people and show how people are manipulated by
culture.
4. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of choosing this topic is to point out the fundamental role of
language in culture.
Language is an important key in extending culture and making it popular in the
world.
Some cultures are more popular because of the popularity of their languages.
Language is a connector among cultures as translation among words and
sentences.
Pop-culture can influence a society and civilization without improving it.
Pop-culture of a nation is better expressed in its own language.
5. RELATION OF CULTURE
AND LANGUAGE
Language is the most powerful way in the communication world.
Kramsch identifies three ways how language and culture are bound together.
First, language expresses cultural reality. (with words people express facts and
ideas)
Second, language embodies cultural reality. (people give meaning to their
experience)
Third, language symbolizes cultural reality. (people view their language as a
symbol of their identity)
6. LANGUAGE AND POPULAR
CULTURE/POP-CULTURE
Popular culture /pop culture refers to the systems and practices used by the majority classes
in a society. Language is changeable phenomena and pop-culture is a powerful source in this
context.
The movie with the biggest weekend gross box office total, the number one song on the
Billboard charts, the most widely read books and the highest ranking television show in the
Nielsen ratings are important elements of U.S. popular culture. It can be seen that these things
affect the language of particular society.
Various forms of popular culture include music, film, television, advertising, sports,
fashion, toys, magazines and comic books, and cyber culture.
All these things have effects on language of the particular society. Language and culture are
inter related and this relationship can be evaluated through their impact on each other.
8. LANGUAGE AND POPULAR
CULTURE/POP-CULTURE
Language is a cultural component which can be described as a cultural
communicating system that is used by people of a particular country in order to
convey their purpose.
According to Larson language is defined as “a complex set of skewed
relationship between meaning ( semantics) and form (lexicon and grammar).
Culture is what brings us together as human beings, as social creatures.
Each culture is evaluated by its literary works of arts.
Pop-culture of a nation cannot be compared with one another because each
cultural value system is respected in a particular time and location.
9. HOW POP-CULTURE
AFFECTS LANGUAGE
Language is rooted in culture and culture is reflected and passed
on by language from one generation to the next.
Language is used to maintain and convey culture and cultural ties
and it is affected by the pop-culture of the society.
There are some important elements of pop-culture such as
multimedia, films and books, religion, sports and Olympics, tourism,
exchange and business, etc. which affect language.
10.
11. MULTIMEDIA, FILMS, AND
BOOKS
The media hold the greatest responsibility in extending language and culture.
Nowadays without media we could not have the ability to closely link nations and
civilizations together and survey them in order to be familiar with different
languages and cultures. In fact, human being is overwhelmed by the speed and
extent to which commercial media takes control of human’s life.
Films can be mentioned as vital elements that help to extend culture through
films’ language. The language of film is a kind of language that reflects culture in
films.
12. CONTINUE….
Different types of books help extending culture. One of the best
ways to transfer culture though books is translation. Translated texts
reflect almost all the aspects of a culture so it is a significant factor
for publishing culture.
So multimedia, films, books, press and newspapers cause to
popular the culture through language.
13.
14. RELIGION
Religion is another cultural component, and there are hundreds of ways that different
culture groups practice and are characterized by that trait. Religion is a cultural system and
without the medium of language has no meaning.
Different religions mean distinction between languages and different cultures.
In each language some cultural ritual ceremony becomes pop-culture. Religion can be
extended through language and culture of that society. This is because we have similarities
in culture and religion and these similarities can be transferred through languages.
Similarities in two different cultures like Iran and India are reflected in multimedia. For
example, word “Bahaar” meaning “spring” is used in both the cultures through their
languages.
15. CONTINUE…
Another case is “Nowrooz” which is a cultural-religious ceremony
broadcasted in the world and because of that it is well known as a
universal pop-culture.
Religion is one of those cultures that are known as pop-culture.
Popular because whenever and wherever one needs religion, it helps to
calm and relieve him.
Almost all the religions are considered as pop-cultures by their
believers.
16.
17. SPORTS AND OLYMPICS
Sport is also an important factor that helps to extend language and
culture. Olympic games as a sport element help a country to represent
its culture and make it popular in the world.
Some pop-cultures were part of a particular native culture but
nowadays they are popularized and are known as universal pop-
culture, just as some sports were played in a specific region like Golf.
18.
19. TOURISM, EXCHANGE AND
BUSINESS
With the fastest means of transportation, travelling has become an
important source of expanding language and culture.
Tourism is a kind of transferring that conveys both language and
culture through its tourists.
Not only tourism leads to cultural exchange but also it indirectly
expands different languages and religions.
This exchange leads to more identical attitudes in neighbour cultures
such as way of dressing, music, ceremonies, knowledge, food, dance etc.
20. CONCLUSION
This study has illustrated what culture is and how it is transferred
through languages under the elements mentioned above.
Language is used to maintain and convey culture and culture gradually
converts to personality; and all personalities, all together, from culture.
Cultures have mutual effects on each other especially cultures that are
neighbours.
Language and culture are intricately interwoven to each another and
cannot be separated.
21. CONTINUE…
Because of popularity of some cultures in a region, they are known as pop-
culture.
Pop-culture of a nation cannot be compared with one another because it may
lead to devaluating one’s values compared with the other.
One of the best features of culture is that it is hard or sometimes impossible to
be translated and clearly expressed through another language.
Each culture can be completely defined just through its own language.
People accept and appreciate cultures or pop-culture that is nearer to their
conceptions or mood.
