1. The effects of technology abuse Over the years, our lives have progressively become
dependent upon technology. From calculators in the classroom to phones, computers
and personal music devices, it seems that most of our daily activities can be done
from the comfort of our couch or with little effort. Although technology has been
helpful in the innovation of various advancements, its abuse has led to many social
problems. These problems are especially manifest in teenagers who have grown up
with these luxuries and cannot imagine life without them. Thus, reliance on
technology has reduced the extent of human interaction, and development of strong
interpersonal skills. In the past, people generally wrote letters to each other or met
in person to communicate. However, with cell phones and other similar devices
widely available, most people are now involved in the wave of texting. Instead of
writing to a friend or arranging to meet, we can easily text them all day long. This
practice distracts us from our activities; instead of paying attention to the teacher or
listening to the boss during a meetintg, we are busy texting. This act shows lack of
respect and condsideration. In addition, during family and other social gatherings,
some people text other friends instead of having a meaningful conversation with the
people around them. Technology also affects the family unit, parents and children
are drifting apart because they hardly have time for each other. When children are
not texting, they are either listening to their music devices or on gaming devices.
Meanwhile the parents are usually busy working hard, trying to pay out the huge
cellphone, cable and internet bills. This technolgy craze also has an effect on the
development of various social and intellectual skills. Most children watch television
before they learn to talk. As a result, they are not able to have meaningful and
intellectual conversations without grammatical errors or allusions to television
shows. They discuss the latest games and have little or no interest in issues
affecting their communities. They do not see the importance of taking action to
promote change and happiness in the lives of other individuals in their communities.
Consequently, they grow up and go off into the world unable to face real life
situations. They become adults who cannot contribute to the growth of society. This
is only a glimpse of the problems that the abuse of technology has caused in our
society. There are many approaches to solve this problem, one is to completely
denounce technology as evil and end our dependence upon it. That is simply
unreasonable, for we cannot deny the need for technolgy and the great advanvces it
has allowed us to make. However, a more pratical suggestion is to teach our
children and ourselves the proper view of technology. Technology should not be a
replacement for human interaction or communication. If we put technology in its
proper place and use it in moderation, we can be a step closer toward strengthening
relationships in our society.
2. -Technology makes life more complex.
- Sweatshops and harsher forms of slavery are more likely to be found in
technologically advanced societies, relative to primitive societies.
- The increasing oppression of technologically advanced societies over those which
are not.
- More people are starving (in total numbers and per-capita), in this most
technologically advanced age, than at any other point in history or primitive pre-
history.
- The increase in transportation technology has brought stressful traffic congestion
in some areas.
- Technicism
- New forms of danger existing as a consequence of innovative forms of technology,
new types of nuclear reactors, unforeseen genetic mutations as the result of genetic
engineering, or perhaps something more subtle which can destroy the ozone or warm
the planet.
- Potentially devastating nuclear weapons become more powerful and proliferation is
made evermore easy with communication and transportation advancements. This
leads to socially stressful military concepts like mutually assured destruction. The
duck and cover drills accompany other lifestyle aspects of an advanced
technological society.
- New forms of entertainment, such as video games and internet access could have
possible social effects on areas such as academic performance.
- Creates new diseases and disorders such as obesity, laziness and a loss of
personality.

3. Job Loss
One of the disadvantages in technology in the workplace and arguably
the most potent is the loss of jobs. Employers worldwide continue to
seek reduction of the cost of production and at the same time
increase their profits. Advanced technology offers a solution to this
pursuit through labor-displacing technology. Automated Teller
Machines take the place of bank tellers and automated airline kiosks
take the place of ticket agents. As a result of these, many jobs are lost
as technology reduces or replaces the need for human resource
Crime
The increase of crime in the workplace is another disadvantage
connected to the use of technology, especially when it comes to the
abuse of computer technology to commit crimes such as Internet
hackings and theft of money through illegal access of credit card
numbers. Invasion of the privacy of employees also happens in the
workplace through computer-based technology. The theft of personal
information and data from computer hard drives for illegal gain or
manipulation is another crime that has risen due to the use of
technology in the workplace.
Communication
Improved and faster communication in the workplace is one of the
advantages of using technology in the workplace. Communication
through hi-tech gadgets such as the cellular phones and computer
technology such as e-mails ensures that the communication process is
fast. The fast receipt and dispatch of information helps increase
efficiency in the workplace.
Profits
The use of modern technology reduces the cost of production
especially when technology takes the place of human resource; this
increases the profits. When using labor- displacing technology, you do
not have to pay a monthly salary and benefits to employees. This
means that your cost of production goes down while your profit
margins goes higher.
