Last month, one of my best friends since childhood got married in California and several of us attended. My friends are of modest means and arranged a very simple wedding party in one of the hotels. It was a very simple wedding that was attended by lots of their relatives. The ceremony was a beautiful one with bride and groom in love and family members crying.
After the nice ceremony, all the guests walked from the wedding chapel to one of the restaurants nearby. There was no prior reservation and all of us just walked into a restaurant to eat out and enjoy together. The bride and groom had coupons for 1-for-1 free offer, which was the only reason why we went to that particular restaurant.

1. Wedding Happiness
Last month, one of my best friends since childhood got married in California and
several of us attended. My friends are of modest means and arranged a very simple
wedding party in one of the hotels. It was a very simple wedding that was attended by
lots of their relatives. The ceremony was a beautiful one with bride and groom in love
and family members crying.
After the nice ceremony, all the guests walked from the wedding chapel to one of the
restaurants nearby. There was no prior reservation and all of us just walked into a
restaurant to eat out and enjoy together. The bride and groom had coupons for 1-for-
1 free offer, which was the only reason why we went to that particular restaurant.
All of us had lunch, enjoyed some drinks, and then we asked for the bill. Till then, I
wasn’t paying much attention to what was going on at the background but as it turns
out the bill was far more than anyone had expected. Everyone contributed whatever
2. money they could from their pockets as the couple didn’t have enough money. But
even after that they were still short several hundred dollars. The coupons that they
brought were actually valid for only a few items, but none of us knew that and we
ordered outside of those selections as well.
I had already spent more than required that day but as things were unfolding it was
becoming clear that nobody had any money to foot the bill. Things had become so
bad that the bride and groom wanted to go up to the hotel room and find any loose
cash or expensive gifts they could sell. The poor bride was getting embarrassed and
stressed for no fault of hers.
I couldn’t bear to see it any longer and got up and pretended to head for the
bathroom. I went to ask the restaurant manager to come and meet. I suggested that
the manager tell the marriage party that there was a mix-up over the coupons and if
they would honor all items and decrease the bill. He instantly agreed, commended me
on my act, and was very happy that the issue would be settled and the restaurant
would get their money. He even gave a 10% extra discount on the bill.
Later that evening when my wife and I met the newly-wedded couple, we took them
out to one of the nicer bars nearby and had a good time. I had also heard from others
that the bride and groom were actually sharing a hotel room with some relatives as
they didn’t have enough money. It was their special night and we felt that they
deserved privacy on their wedding night. I booked a room for them in a nicer hotel
and gave them the keys at the bar that evening. The evening drinks and the room was
our gift to them, as they knew, and we never told them about footing the restaurant
bill earlier as well.
