Two main sources of drinking water exist:
● Groundwater
● Surface water from the Nile
● Accordingly, drinking water in Khartoum state is
produced by groundwater wells of varying depth
and productivity, and by water treatment plants,
which extract Surface water from rivers.

13. Sewage Treatment systems
1. Municipal sewage Treatment Plants:
● Under the administration of Khartoum State Sanitary
Corporation (KSSC)
● Two plants with total capacity of 56000m3/day
● Cover only (7%) of Khartoum
2. Institutional sewage treatment systems:
Mainly activated sludge:
Used by many governmental and private institutions
3. Onsite treatment units:
● Used by individual households and some institutions
● Examples: Septic tanks (20%), Pit latrines(70%), Aqua
privy and others (3%)
