Over the past 30 years, venture capital has become a dominant force in the financing of innovative American companies. From Google to Intel to FedEx, companies supported by venture capital have profoundly changed the U.S. economy. Despite the young age of the venture capital industry, a fifth of current public U.S. companies received venture capital financing. Read more: http://stanford.io/1GiVrcH

Natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes, can wreak havoc on communities and often have disproportionate effects on marginalized populations. For example, during Hurricane Katrina, many people in low-income neighborhoods, like the Ninth Ward, were forced to “ride out” the storm because they did not have access to reliable transportation in order to evacuate. Furthermore, residents in this neighborhood and many others either lost their homes and or sustained significant property damage, due to a neglected levee system that failed. After disasters like Hurricane Katrina, human services organizations are integral to helping communities recover by providing basic needs (e.g., food, shelter) to community members and helping them secure much needed government aid. However, there is often a greater need for resources than there are available resources, which is just one of many ethical dilemmas that may arise. In this Discussion, you will assume the role of a supervisor in a human services organization in your community after a disaster has occurred. You will identify ethical and cultural issues that may arise, consider how you would address those issues, and explore how you would mobilize human services employees to help the community recover. To Prepare Consider how certain populations may be disproportionately affected by natural disasters and how advanced human services practitioners can respond to help these populations. Review the Learning Resources on cultural considerations for human services delivery. Think about how to provide culturally sensitive services to diverse populations adversely affected by natural disasters. Review the Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals . Identify ethical issues that may arise in the aftermath of a disaster. Find one article from an academically appropriate source that focuses on helping communities in the aftermath of a disaster. Post a brief description of a natural disaster that has occurred or could occur in your community and a specific human services organization that would be integral in the aftermath of the disaster. Assume you are a supervisor in the organization. Explain the ethical and cultural issues you would need to address to help the community as a whole respond to the disaster. Then, explain what you would ask employees to do to help the community recover after the disaster and why. Be specific. Support your post with specific NOHS ethical standards and at least one article from an academically appropriate source that you found in your own search. .

Assume the role of emergency manager in your local community. Select a disaster that has or could impact Phoenix, AZ. If this disaster has previously impacted your community, research the disaster to identify what happened, what factors contributed to declaring it a disaster, how the residents of the community were affected, the extent of the damage, and what mitigation plans were in place prior to the disaster? If your community has not experienced this disaster, consider researching other areas that have faced a similar disaster. It is helpful to recognize how other communities prepared and addressed the disaster. As the emergency manager, develop long-term community recovery plans to support the response and recovery process in the aftermath of the disaster. Your plans must include the following (1,250-1,500 words): A description of the disaster that threatens your community. Components of the current mitigation plans in place to prevent extensive damage and support the recovery efforts. Potential areas requiring evacuation and/or sheltering. Include possible sheltering options for the various populations, including specials needs, locations, evacuation plans, and volunteer support. Determine two sources of funding to assist in the response and recovery process. What requirements are necessary to meet conditions of funding opportunities? How are local businesses expected to contribute to the response and recovery efforts? Evaluate the volunteer organizations available in your local community. Discuss what is required to receive assistance from the organization, and what services they offer during the response and recovery process. What are your short-term recovery expectations? What are your long-term recovery expectations? Are there challenges the community could face in the recovery of the disaster? Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines .

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
