Xenotransplantation
1. Xenotransplantation - transplantation of living
cells, tissues, and organs from one species to
another.
Xenograft - is an organ transplanted from one
species to another.
Allotransplantation – refers to same-species
transplant.
Xenozoonosis –
disease transmission.
2. Human xenotransplantation offers a potential treatment
for end-stage organ failure, a significant health problem
in parts of the industrialized world. Xenotransplants
could save thousands of patients waiting for donated
organs. The animal organ, probably from a pig or baboon
could be genetically altered with human genes to trick a
patient’s immune system into accepting it as a part of its
own body. They have re-emerged because of the lack of
organs available and the constant battle to keep immune
systems from rejecting allotransplants. Xenotransplants
are thus potentially a more effective alternative.
26. What three methods are scientists using to make
transplanted tissue unrecognisable to the immune
system?
• Suppressing the immune system.
• Genetically engineering the donor cells to
produce human proteins that disguise the cells
so the immune system thinks they are part of
their own tissue.
• Giving the donor cells a seaweed-based
‘invisibility’ coat.

Infectious disease experts have raised
public health warnings about new
viruses with epidemic potential that
may piggyback on the transfers from
animals to humans (xenozoonosis e.g.
herpesvirus, rotavirus, parvovirus, and
circovirus ).
Potentially develop new disease
29. • should be fully aware of the procedure
and should have no outside force
influencing their choice.
• should understand the risks and
benefits of such a transplantation.
• friends and family members should
also give consent.
• Lifetime monitoring should be
required to ensure that
xenozoonosis is not occurring.
30. Animals have the same "rights" as
humans do and therefore should not
be put to death, even if it saves
human lives..

The issue with primates is more
heatedly debated since the intelligence
level of some monkeys rivals that of
some humans.
Xenotransplantation from pigs might
breach Jewish and Islamic dietary laws
which prohibit the consumption of
pork.
