• The ability to use digital technologies to “identify
questions, locate information, evaluate the
information, synthesize information to answer
questions, and communicate the answers to
others “(Leu, Kinzer, Coiro, and Cammack, 2004,
p.1572).

• New literacies extend traditional literacy
experiences with comprehension of information
on the Internet; effective use of search engines to
locate information; evaluation of Internet sources;
communication using e-mail, texts, and chats;
and the use of word processing programs
(International Society for Technology in

• New litercies is also being considered as a
set of skills of the global literacy. Global
literacy, also known as global awareness or
global citizenship, refers to the skills,
knowledge, and attitude a global citizen
should possess (Clark, 2002).

• 54% of U.S. teens texting daily in 2009
• Text messaging is the primary way that teens
reach to their friends.
• Almost three quarters (73%) of U.S. teens use
online social networking sites.
• U.S. teens own 3.5 out of the 5 following gadgets
averagely: cell phones, mp3 players, computers,
game consoles and portable gaming devices.
