The Effects of Word Choice on Percerptions of Mental Illness
How does word choice affect a person s perception of people who have a mental illness? If a person
uses more politically correct language does that mean they are more understanding of people who
have a mental illness or does it mean that people who use less politically correct language are more
understanding of people with a mental illness. There have been plenty of studies carried out by
researchers that have looked into word choice and its role on how it affects a person s perception. For
instance, in a study done by Angermeyer and Matschinger (2003) they conducted a survey that was
done in Germany to see how word choice such, as labeling impacts a person s perception of people
who have schizophrenia either negatively or positively. They concluded in their hypothesis that it
would negatively affect a person s perception of people who have schizophrenia. In their study they
had 5,025 participants who were eighteen years of age or older, were living in Germany, and had
citizenship in Germany. They concluded from their results that labeling does indeed negatively affect a
person s perception of people who have schizophrenia. Another study by Angermeyer, Buyantugs,
Kenzine, and Matschinger (2004) replicated a study conducted in Germany that found labeling mental
illness negatively impacted people s perception of people with schizophrenia. The researchers decided
to instead replicate the study in Novosibirsk which is located in Russia and Ulaanbaatar which is

Amortization And Impairment Of Goodwill
Amortization Versus Impairment of Goodwill:
Impact on Accounting Quality, Financial Statements Economic Value, Investors, and Auditors
Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) replaced all U.S. financial accounting standards in July
2009. Consequently, ASC 350, Intangibles Goodwill and Other, replaced SFAS 142, Goodwill and
Other Intangible Assets in September 2011. Under ASC 350, goodwill must be periodically tested for
impairment. Goodwill impairment is determined through a two step process outlined in ASC 350.
However, in January 2014, an update to ASC 350 was released, which authorized an alternative
method of accounting for goodwill servicing private companies that could consequently reduce their
costs and simplify their accounting methods. Additionally, the international standard for goodwill
impairment, IFRS 3, specifically mandates that companies must annually test goodwill for
impairment. The specifics of the impairment test are entailed in IAS 36 Impairment of Assets, the
international standard for accounting for goodwill associated with business combinations. This paper
will analyze the effects of the accounting policies enacted under these standards and in particular
analyze the efficiency of impairment testing methods versus amortization of goodwill and the
connection of impairment methods with managerial and CEO compensation and earnings
management. Finally, this paper will analyze if impairment testing under ASC 350 and IAS 36 or
amortization, which is

The Wasps Analysis
The Wasps is a satirical comedy written in 422 BCE by Aristophanes as the Peloponnesian War was
coming to an end. The playwright s purpose for writing this is to mock the Athenian society at the
time. Because Athens also became a democracy during the 5th century, this comedy is particularly
controversial since during the time it was written, the courts were being severely manipulated and
corrupted by Cleon. In addition to this, there various other conflicts that take place during the time that
this was written. The plot centers around the protagonist Philocleon and his antagonist Misocleon and
uses the popular Athenian democratic ideology to point out its very own flaws. The playwright
criticizes both the judicial conflicts, which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In relation to the metaphor of wasps, the text refers to the house as being netted. It seems that there is
only one door in the home giving it a sense of a dungeon like dwelling. Misocleon sleeps on the roof
and is presumably guarding it in the instance that his father tries to escape from there rather than the
door he is aware of being blocked off. The well intentioned Misocleon, tries to deter his father from
his usual routine of going to the courts to sit on the jury for less than a livable wage. Although his plan
is doomed to fail, he still attempts to save his father from his job as a wage slave who has
unknowingly pledged his allegiance to Cleon, the demagogue. Although Philocleon does escape from
his son s poorly thought out trap, Misocleon does not accept defeat but rather attempts to reason with
his father. The father s willingness to at least debate the issue shows that he is a fair man and is willing
to hear what others have to say. Based on their discussion, the reader can see an obvious gap in
generational understanding of the litigious Athenian democracy. Philocleon is illusioned by his petty
wages and is obsessed with the praise of others and the benefit that come along with his position such
as the affection of his own daughter (600 5). However, Misocleon fires back at his partisan father
explaining that when he takes into account all of the taxes, then the income that he is so prided in, is
nothing but 1/10th of what the city makes. (650 5). He

Unethical Experimentation Controversy
From the dawn of man, to modern times, the human race has accomplished so many scientific
achievements that it are spectacular. But one thing in particular that has puzzled humans over the
centuries is the brain, and how it affects human behavior. It wasn t until the late 1800s when Wilhelm
Wundt established the first psychological research laboratory at Leipzig, that experimentation and
research began in order to fully understand the human mind. Afterwards, many other psychologist
such as Sigmund Freud also began research as well, performing experiments and creating their own
theories on certain behaviors. The controversy started when psychologist then began to perform
unethical experiments in order to advance in the field of psychology. The ... Show more content on

In 1961, psychology professor Stanley Milgram conducted quite the controversial experiment called
the Milgram Shock Experiment. Milgram paid people four dollars an hour to attend a learning and
memory in his lab that quickly transformed into something else entirely. Under the watch of Milgram,
the person assigned to be the teacher, would read out words to the other person who was assigned as
the student, and was hooked up to an electric shock machine in another room. Every time the student
incorrectly repeated the words that was read out to him/her, the teacher then delivers a shock to the
student. Starting at fifteen volts (labeled as slight shock ), the teacher can increase the volts to all the
way to four hundred and fifty volts (labeled as XXX). As the teachers reached the higher voltages,
some of them refused to go on any further in fear that they might harm the students, defying Milgram
s authority. Some on the other hand, continued to increase the shock, even as the student yelled and
pleaded for the shocks to stop till they fell silent. Once the experiment was finished, the person
assigned as the teacher was soon to find out that the students were in fact not being shocked, and the
cries of pains were prerecorded. The experiment was deemed unethical because of deception that the
participants actually believed that they were harming an actual person, unaware that the student is an
actor. Also that the participants were exposed to very stressful situations that could have harmed them

Background of emotional intelligence:
Emotional intelligence was described formally by (Salovey Mayer). They defined it as the ability to
monitor one s own and others feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this
information to guide one s thinking and actions . They also provided an initial empirical
demonstration of how an aspect of emotional intelligence could be measured as a mental ability
(Mayer, DiPaolo, Salovey, 1990). In both articles, emotional intelligence was presented as a way to
conceptualize the relation between cognition and affect. Historically, emotion and intelligence were ...

Waring, R., Eadie, P., Liow, S. R., Dodd, B. (2016). Do children with phonological delay have
phonological short term and phonological working memory deficits? Child Language Teaching and
Therapy,33(1), 33 46. doi:10.1177/0265659016654955
Background
Phonological delay is a label given to those individuals who have speech sound error patterns that are
usually normal for younger children, but the individuals with the delay have not yet mastered these
phonological processes (Waring, Eadie, Liow, Dodd, 2016).
Pre school aged children include children ages 3 to 5 years old (Waring, Eadie, Liow, Dodd, 2016).
Short term memory is the process of information temporarily being stored in the brain (Waring, Eadie,
Liow, Dodd, 2016).

This article is credible because it was published in the Child Language Teaching and Therapy Journal.
It was also found on the SAGE Journals online database. The article was produced by researchers who
come from well known and respected universities around the world. The article was published in
2016, and it is only one year old. This indicates that the information is current and up to date
compared to other older findings in the field. The data collection process is also thoroughly described
in the methodology section of the article (Waring, Eadie, Liow, Dodd, 2016).
Article Review This article discusses the differences between working memory and short term
memory in children who have either a phonological delay or typically developing speech. It aims at
discovering whether there is any other language or cognitive aspects that are involved in phonological
errors in children with phonological delay and the differences between phonological working memory
and phonological short term memory. This was measured using various memory tasks and measuring
each child s receptive vocabulary size (Waring, Eadie, Liow, Dodd, 2016).
The subjects of this study are children that solely speak English and have typically developing speech
and language skills and children that speak only English and have a phonological delay. These
children had to have a score greater than 85 on the CELF P 2, the Clinical Evaluation of Language

St Augustine Research Paper
Saint Augustine is undoubtedly one, if not, the most important theologian in church history. His
writings have greatly influenced Christian theology and understanding of God. Saint Augustine laid
out some theological doctrine that has helped shaped Christian s perceptions of sin, grace and
salvation. Ironically, some of his theological postulation emerges from his controversies with different
opposing camps on the aforementioned subjects. However, in this paper, the primary focus will be on
his controversy with the Pelegians. The Pelagians taught that God s given grace before the fall,
combined with the willingness of man to choose good over evil, is enough to earn man salvation. The
Pelagius position places emphasis on man s ability to work out his own salvation, ... Show more

It is obvious from The Confession that Augustine was a man who struggled endlessly to extricate
himself from the bondage of sin, but the more he tried, the more he failed and sinks deeper into its
abyss. And with every failure, comes a sense of disappointment and despondency, until he had a
strange experience. In AD 386, while sitting in his garden, Augustine heard a voice from some
children playing not far away urging him to pick the book the Bible, and read. What he read from
Apostle Paul s letter to the Roman Christian in Chapter 13 transformed, not only his understanding of
the hopelessness and despair man encounters in trying to solve the problem of sin on his own, but he
saw the provision that God has made to remedy the consequences of sin and the grace he has
graciously provided to live a life that is acceptable to God. That moment was the turning point in
Augustine s life and how he developed his sotoriological

Analysis Of Donald Trump s Presidential Debate
When Donald Trump began his improbable run for president 15 months ago, he offered his wealth and
television celebrity as credentials, then slyly added a twist of fearmongering about Mexican rapists
flooding across the Southern border. From that moment of combustion, it became clear that Mr. Trump
s views were matters of dangerous impulse and cynical pandering rather than thoughtful politics. Yet
he has attracted throngs of Americans who ascribe higher purpose to him than he has demonstrated in
a freewheeling campaign marked by bursts of false and outrageous allegations, personal insults,
xenophobic nationalism, unapologetic sexism and positions that shift according to his audience and
his whims. Now here stands Mr. Trump, feisty from his runaway Republican primary victories and
ready for the first presidential debate, scheduled for Monday night, with Hillary Clinton. It is time for
others who are still undecided, and perhaps hoping for some dramatic change in our politics and
governance, to take a hard look and see Mr. Trump for who he is. They have an obligation to
scrutinize his supposed virtues as a refreshing counterpolitician. Otherwise, they could face the
consequences of handing the White House to a man far more consumed with himself than with the

The Structure And Function Of Cell Organelles
The Structure and Function of Cell Organelles
Cells are surrounded with a boundary known as the cell surface membrane and as well as holding the
cell together, being semi permeable, it controls the movement of materials across it. Within the cell are
a number of structures each which have specific functions. These structures are known as organelles.
The cell surface membrane and the membranes of any of the membrane bound organelles described
below are made of the same material, a double layer of phospholipid molecules. Within the cell
surface membrane, the intracellular space known as the cytoplasm, contains all the organelles and a
fluid known as cytosol. Within the cytosol is a network of microtubules and fibres called the
cytoskeleton. This cytoskeleton s main functions are to give support to the cell helping to maintain its
shape and aid the movement of organelles. Most cell organelles and structures are common to both
animal and plant cells but there are some differences as outlined in the table below.

Instrumental variable (IV) estimators represent a theoretically appealing way to deal with the
endogeneity problem. However, in practice it is often difficult to find instruments that both explain a
reasonable portion of the variation in work hours and are unrelated to an individual s academic

controlling for endogeneity are not entirely satisfactory, the researcher can be left without any manner

Over the next two and a half years, we worked to develop and refine CRISP DM. We ran trials in live,
large scale data mining projects at Mercedes Benz and at our insurance sector partner, OHRA. We
worked on the integration of CRISP DM with commercial data mining tools. The SIG proved
invaluable, growing to over 200 members and holding workshops in London, New York, and Brussels.
By the end of the EC funded part of the project mid 1999 we had produced what we considered a good
quality draft of the process model. Those familiar with that draft will find that a year later, although
now much more complete and better presented, CRISP DM 1.0 is by no means radically different. We
were acutely aware that, during the project, the process model was still very much a work in progress;
CRISP DM had only been validated on a narrow set of projects. Over the past year, DaimlerChrysler

Analysis Of Suicide In The Trenches
Suicide in the Trenches
War, a slaughter of men that has gone on for hundreds thousands of years. One of the most gruesome
wars was WW1 which lasted for 4 years, 28 Jul. 1914 11 Nov. 1918. In this devastating war, the total
number of casualties includes about 11 million military personnel and about 7 million civilians. Many
of those soldiers were young men. The poem Suicide in the trenches written by Siegfried Sassoon tells
what the harsh trenches had being like and how many soldiers became depressed. Sassoon was an
officer who earned a military cross after carrying a wounded solider through enemy s crossfire. He
fought in many battles till 1917 where he would then have to leave the war due to Shellshock. Sassoon
criticized the political leaders who sent young men off to die in huge battles that seemed pointless and
while Sassoon was in Hospital he opposed the war by writing many poems including Does it Matter ,
The Hero and arguably the most tragic poem, Suicide in the Trenches .
SUICIDE IN THE TRENCHES
By Siegfried Sassoon
I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.

Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you ll never know

The SOP procedures for preparing and validating calibrations in Section 8 and for validating sample
data in Section 12 must be followed unless it is apparent that the QC in the mandated method or
regulations are more stringent.
QC Analyst Evaluation
Section 12 of each technical SOP details the QC requirements that a based on the method or the 2009
TNI Standard. This section of the SOP provides the analyst with the guidance to identify, correct and
report QC activities before final review by management.
Although each SOP has its own specific QC requirements based on the reference method, Table 3 is
an example of a summary table found in technical SOPs. This table shows the requirement the
acceptance criteria, the frequency (which can vary based on method) and the corrective actions the
analyst takes.
Section 3, Analytical Corrective Action Reporting in DOC D4001 lists the steps the analyst takes to
record QC requirement exceedances. When any of the QC checks listed above are out of compliance,
the analyst initiates a Corrective Action Report (CAR) noting the exceedance, the actions taken and
their outcome. The analyst forwards the CAR to management (primarily the QA Coordinator). Any
decision qualify results is made by management.

`` Invisible Cities `` By Italo Calvino
This illusory book entitled invisible cities was published in Italy in 1972, written by a very famous
Italian prose writer of the postwar era, Italo Calvino. This book highlights a historical memoir of a
well known Venetian explorer named Marco Polo but focuses around a specific dialogue and a series
of stories shared between Kublai Khan, emperor of Mongolia, and his right hand man Polo in the late
1200 s. This concept of writing emphasizes the aspects of humanity and social consequences in
generic city makeup and the way we become trapped in the metaphorical inferno of living .
Considering the use of emotive language and descriptive scenario s presented in the dialogue
throughout the text, the author is able to impose the element of imagination onto the viewer when
stating the differences in both characters denomination and language that forms a barrier, left open to
interpretation. Difficulty in verbal communication meant that the two of them had to communicate
through symbolic gestures, movements, pictures and objects to correspond with each other. In the
beginning of the book, Marco Polo speaks of the cities, of which he visits, in great detail to Khan. The
Emperor continues to listen but questions Polo s ideas and memories when he begins to notice a
pattern in his accounts and queries their authenticity. Rather than recalling the intricacies of the
architecture or the economy and culture each city upholds, he reminiscences about the behavior of
people within the

Morality And Technology And The Presence Of Technology
When young children read the well known fable in class, they are unaware that the story has a moral.
It has a lesson that the adults attempt to instill in them at the very beginning stages of their lives.
These lessons teach morality and begin to introduce certain values to children. In this way, every
person develops values throughout his/her life that are impacted by his or her environment, biology
and social constructs. Through these values, morality is developed and because each person has his or
her own unique values, morality is based upon the individual. All organisms have evolved throughout
their existence on Earth, but interestingly, humans are the only species that apply morals to their lives.
Morality and technology are manmade inventions. Morality relies on evolution and the presence of
technology.
In the essay Nonmoral Nature, Stephen Jay Gould uses examples of acts of survival that insects
commit in order to ensure their survival. However, because their instinctual acts of survival are
viewed as grotesque, these acts seem immoral to humans. Gould stated, If nature is nonmoral, then
evolution cannot teach any ethical theory at all (1211). This statement refers to the idea that the
sacrificing of the caterpillars and spiders is an act of survival. Animals and insects commit acts in
nature and in their environment because they do what is essential to survive. The animals and insects
do not stop to think about whether what they are doing would be

Essay On Diabetes
There is a direct association between hyperglycemia and physiological and behavioral responses.
During hyperglycemia, the brain recognizes it and sends a message through nerve impulses to
pancreas and other organs to decrease its effect (Baynes, 2015). The autoimmune destruction of
pancreatic β cells, leads to a deficiency of insulin secretion which results in the metabolic
derangements associated with T1DM. Normally, hyperglycemia leads to reduced glucagon secretion;
however, in patients with T1DM, glucagon secretion is not suppressed by hyperglycemia (Holt, 2004).
The resultant inappropriately elevated glucagon levels exacerbate the metabolic defects due to insulin
deficiency. In type 2 diabetes these mechanisms break down, with the ... Show more content on

This type1 diabetes is a relatively homogeneous disease in which the insulin secretion of beta cells in
the pancreas starts to decline and eventually ceases totally.
3.4.2. Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance and/or abnormal insulin
secretion (Alberti, 1998). About 90% of all diabetes cases account for type2 (Zimmet, 2001). The
inability of the pancreas to produce insulin or production of insufficient insulin, or the insulin itself is
inactive in the case of type2 diabetes (Naemiratch, 2007). In the case of type 2 diabetes, the blood
sugar is controlled either through diet, with oral hypoglycemic drugs or in extreme cases with
exogenous insulin (Inzicchi, 2002; Gannon, 2006). Individuals with type 2 diabetes mostly exhibit
intra abdominal (visceral) obesity. The presence of hypertension and dyslipidemia (high triglyceride
and low HDL cholesterol levels; postprandial hyperlipidemia) are also observed in these individuals.
Type2 diabetes is the most common form and is highly associated with a family history of diabetes,
older age, obesity and lack of exercise. This type of diabetes is more common in women, especially
women with a history of gestational diabetes, and in Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans
(Baynes, 2015).

History Paper Burial Practices, Concept of After Life...
The concept of afterlife existed among many ancient civilizations. It was met as a way of
understanding the present or as a way to predict the future depending on their needs. As such, in order
to explain the unknown phenomenon that impacted their daily life, early tribes saw natural events as
simple as the rain and the winds or birth and death and regarded them to be controlled by supernatural
powers related to the gods, demons, the moon, the sun or other external driving forces. Ancient people
sought protection for survival and power to maintain order with the tribes by practicing rituals which
were aimed to invoke the spirit of the deceased. However, as civilizations evolved with time, their
beliefs became more complex and profound. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the suffering in the other world would end eventually. Romans funeral rituals usually
included washing the corpse, laying it flat on a sofa or bed, and dressing it with the finest clothes that
individual had ever possessed. A coin would then be placed under the tongue or on the eyes so that he
could pay the ferryman Charon for rowing him to the land of the dead.
The marble urn I observed at the Met dated from mid 1st 2nd century A.D. was used to place the ashes
of the deceased after the body was cremated. As time went by, they came to understand that the
dissolution of the body was inevitable and the physical body was only a temporary host of the soul.
This piece of artifact provided evidence that in ancient Romans point of view, the remains of the
physical body had to be disintegrated in order for the soul to begin a new life. It is reasonable to
conclude that Romans regarded cremating the body of the dead as a naturally faster way to begin the
life in the other world than slow disintegration of the corpse.
On the other hand, Egyptians believed that the person s physical body was more than a temporary host
and it had to remain intact, a condition necessary to attain the afterlife. Moreover, they contemplated
the idea that a person was the combination of several elements such as, the ba , which was the non
physical part of the individual and the ka which was a universal force shared by all.

The Effects Of Climate Change On Soil Moisture
Climate change is expected to have significant impacts on the interactions between the land surface
and atmosphere through alterations and feedbacks in various coupled processes. Soil moisture is one
aspect of the climate system that may be significantly impacted by increased temperatures, especially
in areas where snowpack contributes largely to soil moisture and streamflow. In addition to rising
temperatures and changes in the timing and amount of precipitation, local factors such as soil
properties, vegetation, and topography influence soil moisture distribution and streamflow. This paper
reviews various studies attempting to identify how the mentioned climatic and local factors may
impact soil moisture, and demonstrates some of the complexities associated with adequately modeling
the impacts of climate change on various spatial scales.
Soil moisture plays a significant role in the climate system. Evaporation from the soil surface and
transpiration through plant leaves connect land and atmospheric processes through the water and
energy cycles, and feedbacks associated with soil moisture atmospheric processes affect regional
climate (Hagemann and Stacke, 2014). Soil moisture distribution impacts hydrologic processes
including runoff generation and groundwater recharge in a catchment, in addition to biological
processes and nutrient cycling (Williams et al., 2008). In regions where snowmelt runoff contributes to
soil moisture and streamflow, understanding the factors

Inequalities Toward Women From Biblical Times
Inequalities toward Women
From biblical times, creation began with man. When God created the world and all the things in it, and
he thought it was good. But as man walked the earth, God said man should not be alone, and created
woman. Since this time where woman has become second to man almost a spare part, man has
ingrained into society that a woman is an accessory and throughout the centuries and millennia the
world has evolved and cultures have arisen, it has become the social norm to push a perfect creation
that is woman out of the view of importance and discriminate against her. Women throughout different
said cultures were stripped of their freedom, youth, and had no right to choose their futures. Even now

It has long been proven since the era of World War II that even without men in factories and offices,
jobs and quotas were still met while women were in their places. However, because of the clinging
social norm that a woman s job was to tend to the housework and look after the children, men were
quickly returned their jobs after the end of World War II causing many women to go on strikes and
raise public attention of unfair practices regarding work fairness. This stereotype could not be easily
shaken even throughout the nineteenth century. On the other hand, because of the progressive
economy in the United States at the time, new jobs were opening up for some women. Many middle
class women found employment in department store as clerical workers. (Farmer, 2014.) Although
paid considerably less than their male counterparts, work became available for women and a milestone
on the pathway to workplace fairness. However, there are still issues faced today that prove that
professional workplaces are not necessarily female friendly. In 2015, the ratio of women s to men s
median weekly full time earnings was 81.1 percent, a decrease of 1.4 percentage points since 2014,
when the ratio was 82.5 percent. Women s median weekly earnings for full time work were $726 in
2015 compared with $895 for men. (Hegewisch, DuMonthier, 2016.) Women in general are paid
seventy nine cents for each dollar a man gets paid. According to the United States Census

Malaria
Malaria parasites have been with us since the beginning of time, and fossils of mosquitoes up to thirty
million years old show that malaria s vector has existed for just as long. The parasites causing malaria
are highly specific, with man as the only host and mosquitoes as the only vector. Every year,
300,000,000 people are affected by malaria, and while less than one percent of these people die, there
are still an estimated 1,500,000 deaths per year. While
Malaria was one of the first infectious diseases to be treated successfully with a drug, scientist are still

Here, sexual forms of the parasite develop in the stomach of the Anopheles mosquito completing the
parasites life cycle (Herman, 1996).
People infected malaria have several symptoms including fever, chills, headaches, weakness, and an
enlarged spleen (Herman, 1996). The amount of time for symptoms to appear differs depending on the
form of the parasite. Those infected with Plasmodium falciparum experience symptoms after about
twenty four hours, those infected with Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale produce symptoms
after a forty eight hour interval, and after seventy two hours
Plasmodium malariae begin causing fever and chills (Cann, 1996).
Most malaria cases seem to cluster in the tropical climate areas extending into the subtropics, and
malaria is especially endemic in Africa. In
1990 eighty percent of all reported cases were in Africa, while the remainder of most cases came from
nine countries: India, Brazil, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka,
Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. Globally, the disease circulates in almost one
hundred countries causing up to 1,500,000 deaths annually (Cann, 1996).
Because there is no definite cure for malaria, scientists are trying their hardest to contain the parasite
to where it now exists. The range of a vector from a suitable habitat is fortunately limited to a

The Debate Over the No Child Left Behind Act Essay
The current debates surrounding the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 are both positive and negative.
Many politicians and people that previously supported the Act are now standing against it. In the
beginning many supported the new Act because everyone was aware that a change needed to happen
in the education system and the proposal of No Child Left Behind seemed like the answer we were
looking for. As the No Child Left Behind requirements began to be felt in the school systems across
America and the assessments results started coming in, everyone took a step back and really began to
look at the new law. The results were not what everyone expected, what was once considered an
answer was now becoming the problem.

This is another glitch of No Child Left Behind, the law wanted school to assess their students on a
yearly basis to see who they rated among national levels but they did not give any assistance or
guidance on how they wanted to school to implement this. Schools were now not only forced to
implement the changes to meet the requirement of No Child Left Behind, now they had to come up
with a way to measure their progress. This only added to the negative views of the new law and has
been a sore spot among debaters in Washington and the school system.
According to a nationwide poll released almost 70 percent of American adults who say they are
familiar with the federal No Child Left Behind Act believe it has had no effect or is actually hurting
public schools (Greifner, 2006). Many parents began to see the effects this new law had on their
children. The added stress of testing that would determine if you passed or failed your grade,
homework by the boatloads, and normal childhood activities such as recess were becoming a thing of
the past. Parents and educators began to speak out against the Act and have gone to their states
political parties to try and encourage them to make a change. Some states have listened to the voices
opposing No Child Left Behind and have sought waivers from the federal government to no longer
participate or limit their participation with the law.

The Beloved Country By Alan Paton
Family in Cry, the Beloved Country
One cannot run from hardships, for they occur every day, appear suddenly, and can quickly consume
hope. Instead one must face these difficulties and overcome them. However, to rise above obstacles
alone would only cause further misery and despair. The struggler s family should rally behind him to
comfort and assist him in his time of need. In Cry, the Beloved Country, a 1948 contemporary novel,
Alan Paton uses parallelism to emphasize the importance of family because when individuals
encounter hardships they need support from others to help them.
Primarily, tribal families encourage those who suffer with kind words and actions. Stephen Kumalo, a
man filled with pain and suffering , speaks of the hope he receives from others when he says, There is
my wife, and you, my friend, and these people who welcomed me, and the child who is so eager to be
with us here in Ndotsheni so in my suffering I can believe (261). Paton uses the parallel structure
polysyndeton to show how many people from one s family will go out of their way to lift one s spirits
and renew one s faith in God. Cry, the Beloved Country shows readers that even in difficult times one
can find family eager to provide solace to those in need. Whenever there comes trouble, one can
always count on family to rekindle lost hope.
Although family cannot entirely relieve one of misery, their presence can soothe the pain. When
Kumalo hears of his sister s sickness and must leave

Relocating of a mass number of people made revolting against the Assyrians much harder, and the

Relocation was very vital to the early success of the empire, so much so that the people who were
being relocated weren t really treated as slaves. Historian Karen Radner on the deportation policy in
Assyria stated, The deportees, their labor and their abilities were extremely valuable to the Assyrian
state, and their relocation was carefully planned and organized. We must not imagine treks of destitute
fugitives who were easy prey for famine and disease: the deportees were meant to travel as
comfortably and safely as possible in order to reach their destination in good physical shape.
Whenever deportations are depicted in Assyrian imperial art, men, women and children are shown
traveling in groups, often riding on vehicles or animals and never in bonds. She then goes on to say
that the pictures and all evidence in artwork from the time depict visions of non harmful journeys. The
people getting relocated were treated as good as soon to be slaves could be. This was mainly done in
order to keep workers healthy who may be going through a lot of physical labor in the near future.

There have been plenty of studies carried out by researchers that have looked into word choice and its role on how it affects a person s perception. For instance, in a study done by Angermeyer and Matschinger (2003) they conducted a survey that was done in Germany to see how word choice such, as labeling impacts a person s perception of people who have schizophrenia either negatively or positively. Amortization And Impairment Of Goodwill Amortization Versus Impairment of Goodwill: Impact on Accounting Quality, Financial Statements Economic Value, Investors, and Auditors Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) replaced all U.S. financial accounting standards in July 2009. Consequently, ASC 350, Intangibles Goodwill and Other, replaced SFAS 142, Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets in September 2011. Under ASC 350, goodwill must be periodically tested for impairment. Goodwill impairment is determined through a two step process outlined in ASC 350. However, in January 2014, an update to ASC 350 was released, which authorized an alternative method of accounting for goodwill servicing private companies that could consequently reduce their costs and simplify their accounting methods. Additionally, the international standard for goodwill impairment, IFRS 3, specifically mandates that companies must annually test goodwill for impairment. The specifics of the impairment test are entailed in IAS 36 Impairment of Assets, the international standard for accounting for goodwill associated with business combinations. This paper will analyze the effects of the accounting policies enacted under these standards and in particular analyze the efficiency of impairment testing methods versus amortization of goodwill and the connection of impairment methods with managerial and CEO compensation and earnings management. • 6. The Wasps Analysis The Wasps is a satirical comedy written in 422 BCE by Aristophanes as the Peloponnesian War was coming to an end. The playwright s purpose for writing this is to mock the Athenian society at the time. Because Athens also became a democracy during the 5th century, this comedy is particularly controversial since during the time it was written, the courts were being severely manipulated and corrupted by Cleon. In addition to this, there various other conflicts that take place during the time that this was written. The father s willingness to at least debate the issue shows that he is a fair man and is willing to hear what others have to say. Based on their discussion, the reader can see an obvious gap in generational understanding of the litigious Athenian democracy. Philocleon is illusioned by his petty wages and is obsessed with the praise of others and the benefit that come along with his position such as the affection of his own daughter (600 5). However, Misocleon fires back at his partisan father explaining that when he takes into account all of the taxes, then the income that he is so prided in, is nothing but 1/10th of what the city makes. But one thing in particular that has puzzled humans over the centuries is the brain, and how it affects human behavior. It wasn t until the late 1800s when Wilhelm Wundt established the first psychological research laboratory at Leipzig, that experimentation and research began in order to fully understand the human mind. In 1961, psychology professor Stanley Milgram conducted quite the controversial experiment called the Milgram Shock Experiment. Milgram paid people four dollars an hour to attend a learning and memory in his lab that quickly transformed into something else entirely. Under the watch of Milgram, the person assigned to be the teacher, would read out words to the other person who was assigned as the student, and was hooked up to an electric shock machine in another room. Every time the student incorrectly repeated the words that was read out to him/her, the teacher then delivers a shock to the student. Starting at fifteen volts (labeled as slight shock ), the teacher can increase the volts to all the way to four hundred and fifty volts (labeled as XXX). As the teachers reached the higher voltages, some of them refused to go on any further in fear that they might harm the students, defying Milgram s authority. Some on the other hand, continued to increase the shock, even as the student yelled and pleaded for the shocks to stop till they fell silent. Once the experiment was finished, the person assigned as the teacher was soon to find out that the students were in fact not being shocked, and the cries of pains were prerecorded. The experiment was deemed unethical because of deception that the participants actually believed that they were harming an actual person, unaware that the student is an actor. His writings have greatly influenced Christian theology and understanding of God. Saint Augustine laid out some theological doctrine that has helped shaped Christian s perceptions of sin, grace and salvation. However, in this paper, the primary focus will be on his controversy with the Pelegians. In AD 386, while sitting in his garden, Augustine heard a voice from some children playing not far away urging him to pick the book the Bible, and read. In this devastating war, the total number of casualties includes about 11 million military personnel and about 7 million civilians. Many of those soldiers were young men. Sassoon was an officer who earned a military cross after carrying a wounded solider through enemy s crossfire. This book highlights a historical memoir of a well known Venetian explorer named Marco Polo but focuses around a specific dialogue and a series of stories shared between Kublai Khan, emperor of Mongolia, and his right hand man Polo in the late 1200 s. This concept of writing emphasizes the aspects of humanity and social consequences in generic city makeup and the way we become trapped in the metaphorical inferno of living . Considering the use of emotive language and descriptive scenario s presented in the dialogue throughout the text, the author is able to impose the element of imagination onto the viewer when stating the differences in both characters denomination and language that forms a barrier, left open to interpretation. Difficulty in verbal communication meant that the two of them had to communicate through symbolic gestures, movements, pictures and objects to correspond with each other. In the beginning of the book, Marco Polo speaks of the cities, of which he visits, in great detail to Khan. The Emperor continues to listen but questions Polo s ideas and memories when he begins to notice a pattern in his accounts and queries their authenticity. It has a lesson that the adults attempt to instill in them at the very beginning stages of their lives. These lessons teach morality and begin to introduce certain values to children. In this way, every person develops values throughout his/her life that are impacted by his or her environment, biology and social constructs. Through these values, morality is developed and because each person has his or her own unique values, morality is based upon the individual. All organisms have evolved throughout their existence on Earth, but interestingly, humans are the only species that apply morals to their lives. Morality and technology are manmade inventions. Morality relies on evolution and the presence of technology. In the essay Nonmoral Nature, Stephen Jay Gould uses examples of acts of survival that insects commit in order to ensure their survival. However, because their instinctual acts of survival are viewed as grotesque, these acts seem immoral to humans. Gould stated, If nature is nonmoral, then evolution cannot teach any ethical theory at all (1211). • 24. Essay On Diabetes There is a direct association between hyperglycemia and physiological and behavioral responses. During hyperglycemia, the brain recognizes it and sends a message through nerve impulses to pancreas and other organs to decrease its effect (Baynes, 2015). The autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β cells, leads to a deficiency of insulin secretion which results in the metabolic derangements associated with T1DM. Normally, hyperglycemia leads to reduced glucagon secretion; however, in patients with T1DM, glucagon secretion is not suppressed by hyperglycemia (Holt, 2004). The resultant inappropriately elevated glucagon levels exacerbate the metabolic defects due to insulin deficiency. In type 2 diabetes these mechanisms break down, with the ... The inability of the pancreas to produce insulin or production of insufficient insulin, or the insulin itself is inactive in the case of type2 diabetes (Naemiratch, 2007). In the case of type 2 diabetes, the blood sugar is controlled either through diet, with oral hypoglycemic drugs or in extreme cases with exogenous insulin (Inzicchi, 2002; Gannon, 2006). The marble urn I observed at the Met dated from mid 1st 2nd century A.D. was used to place the ashes of the deceased after the body was cremated. As time went by, they came to understand that the dissolution of the body was inevitable and the physical body was only a temporary host of the soul. It is reasonable to conclude that Romans regarded cremating the body of the dead as a naturally faster way to begin the life in the other world than slow disintegration of the corpse. The Effects Of Climate Change On Soil Moisture Climate change is expected to have significant impacts on the interactions between the land surface and atmosphere through alterations and feedbacks in various coupled processes. Soil moisture is one aspect of the climate system that may be significantly impacted by increased temperatures, especially in areas where snowpack contributes largely to soil moisture and streamflow. In addition to rising temperatures and changes in the timing and amount of precipitation, local factors such as soil properties, vegetation, and topography influence soil moisture distribution and streamflow. This paper reviews various studies attempting to identify how the mentioned climatic and local factors may impact soil moisture, and demonstrates some of the complexities associated with adequately modeling the impacts of climate change on various spatial scales. Soil moisture plays a significant role in the climate system. Evaporation from the soil surface and transpiration through plant leaves connect land and atmospheric processes through the water and energy cycles, and feedbacks associated with soil moisture atmospheric processes affect regional climate (Hagemann and Stacke, 2014). Soil moisture distribution impacts hydrologic processes including runoff generation and groundwater recharge in a catchment, in addition to biological processes and nutrient cycling (Williams et al., 2008). • 29. Malaria Essay Malaria Malaria parasites have been with us since the beginning of time, and fossils of mosquitoes up to thirty million years old show that malaria s vector has existed for just as long. The parasites causing malaria are highly specific, with man as the only host and mosquitoes as the only vector. Every year, 300,000,000 people are affected by malaria, and while less than one percent of these people die, there are still an estimated 1,500,000 deaths per year. While Malaria was one of the first infectious diseases to be treated successfully with a drug, scientist are still looking for a cure or at least a vaccination today (Cann, 1996). Here, sexual forms of the parasite develop in the stomach of the Anopheles mosquito completing the parasites life cycle (Herman, 1996). People infected malaria have several symptoms including fever, chills, headaches, weakness, and an enlarged spleen (Herman, 1996). The amount of time for symptoms to appear differs depending on the form of the parasite. Those infected with Plasmodium falciparum experience symptoms after about twenty four hours, those infected with Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale produce symptoms after a forty eight hour interval, and after seventy two hours Plasmodium malariae begin causing fever and chills (Cann, 1996). Most malaria cases seem to cluster in the tropical climate areas extending into the subtropics, and malaria is especially endemic in Africa. In 1990 eighty percent of all reported cases were in Africa, while the remainder of most cases came from nine countries: India, Brazil, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. Globally, the disease circulates in almost one hundred countries causing up to 1,500,000 deaths annually (Cann, 1996). Because there is no definite cure for malaria, scientists are trying their hardest to contain the parasite to where it now exists. The range of a vector from a suitable habitat is fortunately limited to a maximum ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. The Debate Over the No Child Left Behind Act Essay The current debates surrounding the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 are both positive and negative. Many politicians and people that previously supported the Act are now standing against it. In the beginning many supported the new Act because everyone was aware that a change needed to happen in the education system and the proposal of No Child Left Behind seemed like the answer we were looking for. As the No Child Left Behind requirements began to be felt in the school systems across America and the assessments results started coming in, everyone took a step back and really began to look at the new law. The results were not what everyone expected, what was once considered an answer was now becoming the problem. The National ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is another glitch of No Child Left Behind, the law wanted school to assess their students on a yearly basis to see who they rated among national levels but they did not give any assistance or guidance on how they wanted to school to implement this. Schools were now not only forced to implement the changes to meet the requirement of No Child Left Behind, now they had to come up with a way to measure their progress. This only added to the negative views of the new law and has been a sore spot among debaters in Washington and the school system. According to a nationwide poll released almost 70 percent of American adults who say they are familiar with the federal No Child Left Behind Act believe it has had no effect or is actually hurting public schools (Greifner, 2006). Many parents began to see the effects this new law had on their children. The added stress of testing that would determine if you passed or failed your grade, homework by the boatloads, and normal childhood activities such as recess were becoming a thing of the past. Parents and educators began to speak out against the Act and have gone to their states political parties to try and encourage them to make a change. Some states have listened to the voices opposing No Child Left Behind and have sought waivers from the federal government to no longer participate or limit their participation with the law. • 36. The Beloved Country By Alan Paton Family in Cry, the Beloved Country One cannot run from hardships, for they occur every day, appear suddenly, and can quickly consume hope. Instead one must face these difficulties and overcome them. However, to rise above obstacles alone would only cause further misery and despair. The struggler s family should rally behind him to comfort and assist him in his time of need. In Cry, the Beloved Country, a 1948 contemporary novel, Alan Paton uses parallelism to emphasize the importance of family because when individuals encounter hardships they need support from others to help them. Primarily, tribal families encourage those who suffer with kind words and actions. Stephen Kumalo, a man filled with pain and suffering , speaks of the hope he receives from others when he says, There is my wife, and you, my friend, and these people who welcomed me, and the child who is so eager to be with us here in Ndotsheni so in my suffering I can believe (261). Paton uses the parallel structure polysyndeton to show how many people from one s family will go out of their way to lift one s spirits and renew one s faith in God. Cry, the Beloved Country shows readers that even in difficult times one can find family eager to provide solace to those in need. Whenever there comes trouble, one can always count on family to rekindle lost hope. Although family cannot entirely relieve one of misery, their presence can soothe the pain. When Kumalo hears of his sister s sickness and must leave ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Historian Karen Radner on the deportation policy in Assyria stated, The deportees, their labor and their abilities were extremely valuable to the Assyrian state, and their relocation was carefully planned and organized. We must not imagine treks of destitute fugitives who were easy prey for famine and disease: the deportees were meant to travel as comfortably and safely as possible in order to reach their destination in good physical shape. Whenever deportations are depicted in Assyrian imperial art, men, women and children are shown traveling in groups, often riding on vehicles or animals and never in bonds. She then goes on to say that the pictures and all evidence in artwork from the time depict visions of non harmful journeys. The people getting relocated were treated as good as soon to be slaves could be.
