John Millington Synge s Romantic Vision of the Aran...
John Millington Synge s Romantic Vision of the Aran Islands When John Millington Synge made his
way to the western most islands of Ireland he was in search of inspiration for his writing. The fruit of
his journey was the fame winning book entitled The Aran Islands . Synge had many purposes for this
book, but one of the most compelling was his desire to write an anthropologically geared account of
the people and lifestyle of what many believed to be the last bastion of true Irishness. However, Synge
s anthropological work could not avoid the strong Romantic tendencies that influenced his writing. In
my opinion it is Synge s Romanticism that makes his account more believable. ... Show more content

In Part One of the book he begins by relating the image of the Aranmor countryside as he walks
through it for the first time. He states:
I was wandering out along the one good roadway of the island, looking over low walls on either side
into small flat fields of naked rock. I have seen nothing so desolate. Grey floods of water were
sweeping everywhere upon the limestone, making at times a wild torrent of the road... Whenever the
cloud lifted I could see the edge of the sea below me on the right, and the naked ridge of the island
above me on the other side... (Synge 2)
The most vivid aspect of this passage is the diction, which Synge uses to describe the island s
environment. More than once Synge uses the word naked to refer to the rock. He also builds further
that image by calling the land desolate and wild . Synge also makes an important play of the colors of
the Aran Islands. He uses the images of grey and black quite often throughout the book. At one point
he states that everywhere he turns he finds, ...the same grey obsession twining and wreathing itself
among the narrow fields... (Synge 46). By describing the island thus he helps the reader build the
image of the Aran Islands as something quite distinct from the lushness of the Irish mainland. The
contrast between the environment of the islands and the mainland is important for Synge to establish,

Participatory Culture Paper
It s no secret that people are engaging more and more with the Internet and social media everyday. A
simple Google search can lead you to various discussion forums, Tumblr blogs, and a plethora of hash
tagged Tweets. The Internet is an interactive medium, and as users of that medium, we have access to
innumerable amounts of data and information previous generations could only dream of. With the rise
of an interactive, communicative platform, people and companies can send and receive messages
instantaneously. Take the phenomenon of live tweeting for example: audience members (particularly
fans) watching a television show in real time can provide instant feedback of their responses, and
using particular hashtags, can have their responses appear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
392). In other words, people are acting as prosumers, a term coined by Alvin Toffler, by consuming
and producing media texts of their own (Toffler, 1989). The Internet provides a space where this
participatory culture can thrive. Discussion based forums and boards are especially active places
where fans can interact. According to Jenkins, message boards and forums become knowledge
communities that structure and organize the fans knowledge about a particular text (Booth, 2010, pp.
37 38). From these interactive online hubs, fans can work together to create distinct meanings unique
to their fan culture and themselves, according to media scholar Paul Booth: Dialogue through forums
and listservs create meaning for the members of the community separated from the meaning contained
(or read) within the extant media object (Booth, 2010, pp. 37 38). Discussion boards and forums aren t
the only places where this type of interaction occurs; blogs are another place where fans can engage in
this participatory culture. Blogs, and more importantly, their ability to comment and provide feedback
are integral to the interactivity and productivity of online fandom. According to Booth, Comments
become a way for the blog to elicit feedback and participation by members of a community. This
ability to provide instantaneous feedback fulfills the desire of instant gratification and fosters the
ability to communicate more effectively as a collective

Bhopal, Bhopal And Its Effects
Thirty years ago in Bhopal, India, an accident at the Union Carbide pesticide plant led to around thirty
tons of highly toxic gases to fill the air and spread through the nearby towns. When the accident
occurred, over 600,000 people were exposed to the very deadly gas. Over the past years, 15,000
people have been killed by the disaster and it s effects. (Union Carbide Corporation, 2001 2014) Toxic
material still remains in Bhopal to this day. (Taylor, 2014) This accident occurred in 1984 at the Union
Carbide plant, which had been established in Bhopal in 1969. Reports began months before the
disaster of the possibility of a huge accident. Staff had been being laid off for weeks prior and that had
led to less and less safety checks. (Taylor, 2014) The gas that leaked is named Methyl Isocyanine.
Methyl Isocyanine is used as a popular pesticide. When in it s liquid form, the chemical is odorless
and very flammable. In a gas though, it is highly toxic and irritating. The organic compound can also
be found in small amounts in certain cigarettes. Union Carbide was using Methyl Isocyanate as an
intermediate. Methylamine was made to react with phosgene to produce the Methyl Isocyanate, which
then reacts with 1 naphthol to form carbonyl, which is the final product. The accident was triggered
when water entered Tank E610, which contained more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate, initiating a
runaway reaction. (Ganesh, 2015) An employee was flushing a corroded pipe and many stopcocks

Designing a Reward System
Designing a Reward System
Tiffany Hautau
Rewarding and recognizing employees is a ticklish business. It can motivate people to explore more
effective ways to do their jobs or it can utterly discourage such efforts.
Here are a few tips and traps:
Establish a clear link between what people are rewarded for and the organization s priorities. Does
everyone see and understand the relationship between their improvements and financial rewards? Too
many profit sharing plans, for example, are disconnected from daily work. The effect of cost control
or customer satisfaction efforts on the bottom line is so fuzzy that it s meaningless.
Be careful when offering money or recognition for employee suggestions. This can lead to conflict ...

Praise/recognition from supervisors Praise and recognition from supervisors is consistently found to
be among the most important motivators. Employees want to be recognized and feel their
contributions are noticed and valued. It is important that supervisors recognize the value and
importance of sincerely thanking employees verbally and/or in writing for their specific contributions.
Professional growth and development opportunities Supervisors may provide employees opportunities
to participate in educational programs or other activities that will expand their skills/knowledge .
Employees benefit by developing new skills, and the institution benefits from the additional expertise
individuals bring to the job. A recent survey found that 87% of responding workers viewed special
training as a positive incentive, and it appeared most meaningful to employees with postgraduate
education.
Paid Leave Supervisors may award employees up to 32 hours of paid leave annually in recognition of
meritorious performance .
Progression through the salary range Employees may receive salary increases to recognize the
attainment of new and/or the enhancement of existing skills/competencies or for assuming increased
responsibilities within the scope of the current position. The salary increase represents a progression
through the salary

Racism Today in the United States
Racism Today in the United States After living in a place like Bend Oregon for 18 years I haven t ever
noticed a difference between blacks and whites. Bend has been said to be one of the whitest places to
live , yet I never viewed a city by its race. Being racist to me meant that it was the whites who had a
problem with the blacks and whites didn t want anything to do with blacks. I hadn t actually seen
racism in action from anyone here. Now, after watching the film Crash and reading the essays Blinded
by the White: Crime, Race and Denial at Columbine High written by Tim Wise and White Privilege:
Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack written by McIntosh, my understanding of race, diversity, and
communications have changed.
Racism, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s almost as if racism is becoming a huge excuse for problems that are happening in this world.
Racism is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a
particular race is superior to others (Dictionary). I never viewed racism as blaming things on skin
color but that s what it is. Racism is based on a skin color and culture, not on school shootings and
world events. To say that two African American teens organized a school shooting because all the
people in his school were being racist towards him and everyone noticed those racist acts that would
make sense. To say that when two white teens started acting differently and everyone still saw them as
normal would have been caught if they were black, doesn t make sense. Those teens, whether their
skin color was black or white, still would have been viewed as teens just going through a phase .
With the stereotype that teenagers fall into no matter what their skin color, people will jump to
conclusions and suspect them of something. When it comes to that particular age group they are in the
process of trying to find who they really are, all teens start acting differently. They go through these
phases trying to find which phase or lifestyle fits who they feel they truly

A Brief Note On The State Of Economic Crisis
H2O Can t be a No
Cochabamba, one of the poorest cities in the world has almost no access to safe water and its citizens
suffer from life threatening waterborne disease. Cochabamba s economy cannot afford the necessary
infrastructure to ensure everyone access to safe water. Bechtel must privatize Cochabamba s water,
offloading the previously unaffordable infrastructure to distribute water to the underserved poor.
1 How did Bolivia get into the situation it s in now? What led to this need for privatization?
Bolivia is in a state of economic crisis, caused by the limited access to, excess pollution, and scarcity
of fresh water. Privatization will provide the economic stability necessary to advance technology and
spread water into poor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the long run, water is conserved, solving the water crisis and providing water to all Bolivian
families.
2 What is the political climate in Bolivia? Will it support your bid?
Richer citizens are capable of getting by with safe water, but poorer settlements have limited access to
water and are desperately in need of a privatized water system. In Villa San Miguel, the residents had
recently dug a well, increasing their access to water. As Finnegan states, Clean water was suddenly
plentiful and relatively cheap households paid the water cooperative between two and five dollars a
month to cover the costs of running the pump and maintaining the system. [4]. Through the foundation
of a new, inexpensive water source, this well provided water to 210 families. The expenses are
covered by the townspeople, whom collectively can fund cheaper water sources compared with public
access. Although this drastically decreases the number of people without water access, this is not a
sustainable water source and will soon run out, excentrifying pollution and halting access.
As for people without public access nor locally funded water sources struggle to survive with minimal
water and the diseases acquired by pollutants. The population is growing, and Cochabamba does not
have a water system in place to support all community members, resulting in an increase of people
without water. Finnegan continues by stating that, Today, Cochabamba is ringed by dozens of barrios

I Was A Little Nervous
Part One (329 words):
I was a little nervous about not only trying to perform the Stunning Spell, but also having this spell
cast upon me, due to the fact that it renders it s victim unconscious. I also did not expect the effect to
be instantaneous.
Once my partner was ready and stood surrounded by cushions, I raised my wand and brought it back
down in a quick slashing motion, Stupefy! . As a flash of blue light left my wand towards my partner,
she immediately fell backwards onto the cushions. I found it quite difficult to focus on making the
spell effective as I did not want to cause her any permanent harm, however, I found that just thinking
about her becoming still was enough to get the spell to work this time, although I know that ... Show

I barely thought about how it would affect him before his arms and legs immediately snapped to his
sides and he fell face first into the pile of cushions. I must admit that I did laugh a little when I saw the
look of frustration in his eyes.
Part Two (209 words):
Now we moved onto practicing the counters. Seeing as we had all tried the spells, we decided it was
only fair that we all practiced the counters as well.
First, one of my partners performed the Stunning Spell to our other partner and allowed me to practice
the counter. Once our partner was on the ground, I pointed my wand straight at her chest and said
Rennervate . As the bright red light shot from my wand, I kept focusing on her waking up and sitting
up. After a few seconds she did just that, which I was thankful for as my focus was starting to waver a
little.
When it came to the Full Body Bind Curse Counter, I volunteered to be the one that needed it. I tried
to fight the curse as it hit me, but there was no way to and I was on the floor in seconds. Laying there I
heard one of my partners say Petrificus Removere and I could see his wand move in a clockwise
motion before the golden mist started to wrap itself around me. I could feel my muscles start to relax
from my toes upwards through my whole body until I was eventually able to move and sit up.

The Never-Ending Financial Crisis of 2008
Since it began in 2008, the US has faced what is being called the great recession. It is 2013, and it is
clear apparent that it is a recession longing to be cured. Through the works of Putnam, Sum et. al.,
Wisman, and Colander, we can better understand this crisis and look for the best way to get out of it.
To begin, Robert Putnam describes what has occurred in the U.S. over the past several decades. He
states that over the past several decades the U.S. has been subject to [an] economic and cultural
[entanglement] a mixture of government, private sector, community and personal failings (Putnam
2013, III).
Putnam believes that this financial crisis occurred as a result of layoffs, and many closings of
businesses (Putnam 2013, 2).
We can further this understanding by turning to Sum, et. al., who believed that the crisis occurred due
to the blue collar workers who have lost their jobs, and might never see those jobs again (Sum, et. al.
2010, 6).
Our next economist to turn to is John D. Wisman. In his article he describes what he believes to be the
cause of the crisis. He states that this recession occurred centered upon inadequate regulation
stemming from laissez faire ideology, and low interest rates (Wisman 2013, 921). He further points
out that an underlying effect of wage stagnation and dramatically increasing inequality in the US over
the past 35 years may also be a cause.
Now to the guy who wrote our current textbook, Macroeconomics 9th Edition, who

Movement Self Evaluation By Robyn Ogilvie
Movement Self Evaluation by Robyn Ogilvie For 07/01/16
The S3 Movement and Staging Unit began with the class looking at and learning about different
positions of staging such as End On and Traverse. After that, we moved onto looking at different types
of movement and how to use them. We also carried out lots of different movement warm ups before
going onto planning and rehearsing a Christmas movement piece. We eventually performed our piece
to a target audience of our choice.
There are three stages to properly warming up the body. The first stage is Cardiovascular exercises,

To show a higher position of power, I used a lot of space of stage and was positioned downstage near
the audience. This helped develop the storyline as it helped the audience get to know the characters
and the stressful and unhappy relationship between Santa and Mrs Claus.
However, when Lewis played the family s teenage son, he used very closed body language with
minimal hand gestures or eye contact so show he is a shut off teenager. He also take up little space on
stage with a very rounded posture so that he isn t noticed.
Stylised movement is abstract movement that conveys an object, activity, feeling or place. It can be
used in many different ways for example mime or choreographed dance routines are popular.
Normally done to music, stylist movement is fun, holds almost endless possibilities and is a very
effective technique to use.
In our piece, the elves used stylised movement to show a dance off after smashing the magic snow
globe. They were positioned on centre/left centre stage. The dance had accurate timing and a fast
speed. The dance was choreographed and involved no sound. This added lots of comedy and taught
me how to use dance in a stylised movement piece.
My whole class was involved in this performance. I played Mrs Claus and the Mother, Greg played

The Impact Of Alexander I On Russia
Alexander I was the Tsar at the time Napoleon marched his Grand Army of more than 600,000 men
into Russia during June of 1812. The Russians called this war the Patriotic War due to the strong
resistance and outstanding endurance that ensued by the entirety of the population. The Russians
retreated for much of the war and the French advanced at a quick and efficient pace, conquering much
of Russia on the way to Moscow. Napoleon was under the impression that once Moscow had been
captured and occupied, the Tsar would capitulate. However, this was not the case.
On September 14, 1812, what is now known as the Fire of Moscow broke out. The majority of
historians attribute the initial fired to the Russian army as a form of sabotage. ¾ of the

How Did George Eastman Revolutionize The Photography...
George Eastman was born July 12, 1854 in Waterville, New York. A few years after finishing he
moved to Rochester, New York. In 1880 he started his own business, the Eastman Dry Plate and Film
Company. He started the company after he perfected a process of making dry plates for photography
(Britannica, George Eastman). Eight years later, Eastman designed a camera that was perfect for the
amateur photographers. Things changed dramatically in 1888 when George Eastman introduced the
Kodak camera. A small hand held box, it cost only $25 about the price of a higher end iPad in today s
money, which put it in the range of the well off middle class. And it offered simplicity: It arrived with
100 shots preinstalled, and when they were taken you shipped the entire camera back to Eastman s
factory in Rochester, New York, where workers developed the photos and mailed them back to you
along with your reloaded camera. You press the button, we do the rest, as the Kodak slogan rang

Blind Faith In Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown
By putting faith to the test Nathaniel Hawthorne points out in Young Goodman Brown that relying
entirely on it as a mean of salvation is questionable, if not wrong. Perhaps Hawthorne wants to point
out that religion and faith has two sides, and that one side could lead to a miserable existence led by
blind faith. By using nature in the setting Hawthorne points out that our moral compass can be
challenged around every corner.
Goodman Brown is the representation of the common man. He sets out on his errand knowing that he
will be confronted with a test of some sort. He is naïve and determined that after this journey he will
return unscathed and able to follow his wife to heaven. During his journey he becomes more alike the
traveller he meets. This suggest that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He even acknowledges this when goody Cloyse is touched by his staff. This explains how he is able to
travel at unnatural speed and his serpentine staff. The traveller tells goodman Brown that he has been
with every puritan, even goodman Browns father and grandfather, meaning he has been able to corrupt
them all. Goodman Brown resembles the traveller and it could be that the traveller is in fact the evil
personification of him self or his father. He was with goodman Brown s grandfather when he whipped
a Quaker woman in the streets of Salem. The witches presence and the travellers mentioning of his
forefathers could be Hawthorne s way of referencing terrible historic events and making the reader
reflect on past events.
Goodman Brown s wife Faith, as the narrator tells us, is aptly named for this story. She is the
representation of innocence and faith. Her pink bonnet is used as a representation for her during
goodman Brown s travel through the thick forest and becomes a constant reminder of her presence in
goodman Browns mind. She does not have much depth in the story, but seems to be the loving and
faithful wife of goodman Brown and the anchor of his

An American Portrait Photographer, Philippe Halsman
An American portrait photographer, Philippe Halsman, in the mid 1900 s once said, A true portrait

of human being he was. He provides a good point, as he gives his opinion that portraits are a
representation of an individual, to show the memory of their soul through artwork even if it s
photographs, paintings, drawings, or sculptures. Whether it is to remember the past or present,
portraits tell their own story in a moment of time through the frame of the artistic eye. Portraits consist
of many underlying layers that are exposed by the artist to mesmerize the viewer to the unique

For example, Yousuf Karsh characterizes Muhammad Ali (plate 1) through a powerful photograph, not
only as an individual but an American hero who shows power and strength. When looking at the
image the most apparent form is his face and the emotion that is being expressed. While Ali s head is
turned at forty five degrees, he remains to have eye contact with the viewers, which means he is not
afraid to show the world who he is and how he wants to be represented. Furthermore, the bold stance
of his fists carefully placed on his hips and his shoulders slightly forward exemplifies his fearlessness
and confidence that he has in himself and that many others who chant his name know him to be.
While Karsh identifies a more serious approach to a portrait that captures what Muhammad Ali stood
for, there are also more whimsical ways to apprehend the narration of a person. Gwenn Seemel is one
amazing artist that truly captures the essence of a person and makes them come alive on the canvas.
During the course of an hour long interview, Seemel takes hundreds of photos while her subject spills
his or her whole life s story. In a video about her artwork and the process that goes with it she states,
Portraits should not be a still thing. While portraits are often a two dimensional representation of an

appearance, not her personality or intellect.
Race Representation and the Generation Gap
One way that representation of race manifests itself in Flower Drum Song is through a generation gap:
the older versus newer generation. If we compare Ta to his father, there is a clear distinction in both
their dress and their speech. Ta wears American suits and ties while Master Wang wears stereotypical
Chinese garb. He even accidentally burns his suit when he is forced to wear one. Wang also holds on
to a more traditional way of doing things. He is hesitant to put his money in the bank, and when his
sister in law finally convinces him to do so, he is unaware of how to behave in such a contemporary
western setting and sets off the alarm, momentarily creating a frenzy. His scenes with his younger son

The Bishop Orders His Tomb And My Last Duchess
In his poems, The Bishop Orders His Tomb , Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister , and My Last Duchess
, Browning explores a few sins that link to Victorian ideas yet continue to be compelling commentary
on some of the modernity s biggest contradictions. These characters process the world according to
their own selfish ideologies, filtering into dramatic monologues that challenge and comment on the
time s social norms and growing institutions. The narrator of Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister is
resentful and irrationally petty contrary to the monolithic idea of a monk. In My Last Duchess charm
thinly veils the tyrannical nature of a respected Duke. Lastly, the bishop of The Bishop Orders His
Tomb is sour with greed, jealousy, vanity, and resentment. These characters act out of their socially
prescribed nature and this, I think, is ultimately a critique of Victorian ideals of order, structure, poise,
domesticity and perfection. These ideas of people and institutions rarely reflect the reality.
In Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister , a Spanish monk monologues about his irrational hatred for a
Brother Lawrence. He mocks with disdain, creates ideas of Brother Lawrence that paint him in an
undesirable light, dreams of sabotaging the monk s garden of melons, and even concocts a plan that
will presumably send Brother Lawrence to hell. Such bitterness is punctuated by the idea that this
monk would be willing to sell his soul simply for the pleasure of enacting Brother

The Trial And The Metamorphosis

Senior Project Essay
The Trial and The Metamorphosis are the two foremost works Franz Kafka has ever written. By doing
this, Franz makes the similarities and differences very obvious, yet each text is complex in their own
way. In The Trial and The Metamorphosis, Kafka uses unique aspects to compare the characters in
each novel. Each character is being forced by anonymous forces. They both go through loneliness to
find the meaning behind their suffering. Each similarity and difference in The Trial and The
Metamorphosis, come along with complexity that gives readers a deeper psychological view. In
having these similarities and differences, it can be arguable that the characters had inevitable deaths.
At the end, their death may or may not have been preventable which shows their struggle in each
story.
In both, The Trial and The Metamorphosis, the characters never find out who the anonymous forces
are. This is one of the dominant issues of both stories which concludes to be one of the similarities.
One of the examples would be from The Trial, in this scene of The Trial, Joseph K is leaving the bank
and as he is passing by a lumber room, he realizes that some of the warders are getting beaten. He
asked for the man beating them to stop but the man did not listen and continued to beat them. The
difference between these stories is that they handle their situation in a very different ways. In The
Metamorphosis,

Jack Welch Paper
The analogy of a leader involves the head, the heart, and the feet, but according to Welch, there are
four essential traits of leadership, a female trait, and two critical questions. I would rightly conclude
that the seven characteristics of Jack Welch do not cover the bases and the analogy of a leader. The
seven characteristics of a leader that Jack Welch looks for in a leader emphasizes more on one area
than the others. There is more emphasis on the heart than the other areas. From the ideology of the
analogy, I discovered that Jack Welch`s characteristics have about 71 % of it concentrated on the
heart.
I disagree with how Jack Welch`s prioritized those characteristics because I personally think that
passion should be the first the seven characteristics because it is the force that empowers one to take
an initiative in a certain field. The second characteristic should be energy because before one can be a

Annexed Philippines Dbq
Should the United States have Annexed the Philippines? No man is good enough to govern another
man without that other s consent. When the white man governs himself, that is self government, but
when he governs himself and also governs another man, that is more than self government that is
despotism [rule by a tyrant]. In annexing the Philippines, we were being conquistadors, comparable to
Spain, who we were fighting at the time. The Filipinos knew exactly what they were risking by trying
to receive independence, they knew they may have been too weak to govern themselves. It is
completely against the foundation of the US to seize freedom from another man. I believe the United
States should have never annexed the Philippines without the Filipinos total consent. The American
Anti Imperialist league has a platform I fully agree with. We protest against the extension of American
sovereignty by Spanish methods... (Doc A, American Anti Imperialist League). In trying to conquest
other nations, the US being identical to the enemy, Spain. What is the point in helping the Filipinos

Midterm Essay Passing, by Nella Larsen
Passing, by Nella Larsen is a novel all about pretending to be something that you are not. It is about
giving everyone the impression that everything is in order when in reality everything is falling apart.
Passing in this novel refers to the ability of a person to be classified as one thing, normally a social
group, while belonging to a different group. Passing is usually done to gain class or acceptance by
groups other than one s own. The primary focus of the novel is on racial passing which is the ability to
look white and belong to a white group when in reality the person is an African American in order to
gain privileges that were unavailable to them. Although racial passing is the main focus, another major
theme in this novel is sexual passing and identity. Sexual passing refers to a person s ability to be
judged or viewed as a heterosexual person but in reality they are homosexual or bisexual. This was a
masked theme in the novel because in the early 1900 s, homosexuality was not something that was
accepted. Larsen made it aware that these were real problems in those times without coming out
directly and saying it. The main plot of Passing focuses on two light skinned black women, Irene
Redfield and her old time friend Clare Kendry. Both women can pass as white women. Irene who is
married to a successful African American doctor, passes only when it is

The Innocence Of Simple Observation
In particular, Krishnamurti emphasizes that In all spiritual matters, there must be and should be no
authority whatsoever because you cannot be free, to investigate, to find out for yourself what
meditation means if you are under the influence of an authority (What is Meditation (Truth and
Actuality) 1968). By the word investigate, he means observation. It is only in the process of
observation that we can learn the reality of what is. In the innocence of simple observation there can
be no judgement or holding to anything that is seen. In pure observation which Krishnamurti also
terms as choiceless awareness (Beyond Myth and Tradition Series 1997) he suggests that when we

The double slit experiment demonstrates that the observation of a system will alter the final product to
be particles or waves if no observation takes place a wave pattern is revealed; if observation takes
place these same objects exhibit the behavior of point particles. When fully matured observation of the
movement of life increases our level of awareness and perception which allows for the natural
transcending of the senses and the intellectual mind to bring us to the direct experience of the Self
which is always in the transcendent. In the transcendent we realize that the observer has become the
observed, the two are united in One, the Self. According to Krishnamurti, to transcend is by choiceless
awareness (Beyond Myth and Tradition Series 1997) which allows the mind to be free of all its total
content so that we empty the known and from that emptiness...is something most holy, which is the
whole movement of meditation, then life then has a totally different meaning (What is Meditation
(Truth and Actuality) 1968). What Krishnamurti appears to be suggesting is that to live in a permanent
state of transcendence there is no need to study books on self improvement or to self program one s
self or be confined within the practice of regular meditation for the transcendent power of innocent
observation is enough to unite us with the Self. Observation, according to Krishnamurti

Analysis Of Cathedral By Raymond Carver
A New Perspective Everyone at one point has judged a book by its cover. In the short story, Cathedral
, Raymond Carver creates a narrator who bases off ideas and assumptions about blind people from
movies. The narrator has never interacted with a blind person before the day where his wife invites her
friend, who is named Robert, to stay. The narrator and Robert have never met, but the narrator has a
strong dislike towards Robert before meeting. The narrator s closed mindedness and misconceptions
leads him to judge Robert, however after a few hours of interaction, the narrator learns more about
him and grows to have a new perspective about people not being who they think they are. The narrator
is pre judgemental towards all people who are blind, whether or not he has met them. He believes all
blind people are the same as those he has watched in movies. The narrator perception of the blind is
that they moved slowly and never laughed and when they went out they were led by seeing eye dogs
(Carver 104). The movie industry creates a false image of the blind, which leads to the narrator s
assumptions. However, the blind are not all the same, just like how everyone else in the world are not
the same. People are designed to be different in their personalities, thoughts, looks and much more.
The narrator s ideas of Robert are based off of false conceptions and this changes his attitude towards
Robert. The narrator already has strong feelings towards Robert before meeting him

Doctor Faustus and the Role that Sin plays in God s Divine Plan.
The nature of sin is brought up many times in the play Doctor Faustus. It seems that Faustus (like all

damnation, or are we doomed from birth. The play deals with Faustus struggle to understand sin and
its effect on the human soul. There is a interesting scene where the seven deadly sins appear before
Faustus. To understand the importance of the seven deadly sins in this play, we must first learn what
constitutes a sin. Once we grasp this, we can proceed to understand the role that sin has on the play.

When Jesus was asked what commandment in the law was the greatest. He replied: You shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and
first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law
of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:37 40).
Since the entire law of God is according to the words of Jesus, this scripture is merely a commentary
on the wonderful principles of love. If this is so, then sin should be defined in terms of a lack of love,
rather than as a formal law. According to this point of view a sin is any failure to love God and our
fellow man with a perfect heart, which then a lack of love would lead to certain attitudes and deeds
which are displeasing to God. Keeping this in mind we can proceed to see how sins are classified.
There are two categories of sin, mortal sin and venial sin. We commit mortal sins when we break a
commandment of God in a serious manner, for example, idolatry, adultery, murder, slander. These are
all things that are contrary to the love that we owe God. Jesus taught that even looking at a woman
lustfully is a sin. Sin can be both committed on the inside (choices that we make in our minds) or on
the outside (choices that are then carried into action). A man who willfully desires to have sex, steal,
murder
or some other mortal sin, has

Dear Associated Students of Western Oregon University, Rex Fuller
When I decided to go to Western Oregon University, I knew I was going to a small school, and I

school. The reason I came was for the Western for the WOU women s rugby team. When I came to

Western Oregon women s rugby team has gone to the conference finals three years in a row? And in

WOU could easily become one of the top schools in the country for rugby. All the rugby program
would need is more support from the university. In fact, this is an excerpt from a NCAA article about
rugby:
For all institutions, it is an economical way to offer a popular women s athletic activity for current and
incoming students. To field a women s rugby team, the basic needs include: 1) a pool of existing or
incoming students that want to play, 2) a coach, 3) a soccer sized field for practice and competition,
and 4) developing a schedule with local, regional and national competitive opportunities.
WOU already has all of those things and a club that is already performing at a high level, yet, rugby is
not considered a sport by the university.
By support, I do not necessarily mean money. All though money would be nice because rugby runs all
their own fundraisers and gets no financial support from the school. Currently the rugby teams
compete with the lacrosse teams for a field to practice on. Even when the rugby teams are allowed to
practice, the field is double or triple booked, meaning they have a small half or quarter of the field to
practice on. In fact, most nights the football field is completely unoccupied. If the rugby teams and
lacrosse teams could use the football field or other empty fields, there would be less frustration about
practice time. Clubs aren t even allowed to use the empty weight rooms on campus. This forces the

Genetic Disorders and 8p23 Chromosomal Deletion
Abstract: The Deletion in the distal region of chromosome 8p23 is associated with major

Numerical abnormalities, or aneuploidy, is when an individual is missing a chromosome or has an
extra chromosome. Monosomy is when there is only one chromosome present from a pair due to
nondisjunction at the second division of meiosis. The only known viable case of monosomy, is Turner
s syndrome, where an individual only have one sex chromosome . Trisomy are cases where there are
three of a particular chromosome when there should only be two present. Cases of an additional
chromosome are seen in both autosomal and sex chromosomes. Majority of cases are not viable,
however there are common types that do survive. The most notable cases are trisomy 21 and
Klinefelter syndrome. Trisomy 21 is a genetic disorder of chromosome 21 having three copies,
causing intellectual and physical growth delays. The four types of structural abnormalities are
chromosomal deletions, duplications, translocations, inversions, and rings. When chromosome
mutations are created, either through a mistake in cell division or by a mutagen, protein synthesis is
affected. The structural changes can produce a varying degree of developmental difficulties in an
individual, depending on which genes experiences the structural change. Chromosome changes are
often damaging to an individual causing developmental difficulties and in some cases death can be an
outcome. A deleted section of a chromosome can result in developmental delay, heart problems,

Driverless Cars Are Better
Driverless cars are safer than manual cars in many ways. I will explain why they are safer. The first
reason why is because of safety. Examples of this car having a lot of safety is that it accelerates and
stops more sharply, it prevents car accidents, and that it tells you where it needs to go. What s useful
about the acceleration and brakes is that they work really well. What s useful about it preventing car
accidents is that you wouldn t have to worry about getting hurt or killed. What s useful about the radar
that tells you where you need to go is that you can just sit and enjoy the drive. The second reason why
is because it is a lot easier. Examples of this car being a lot easier is that

Summary Of The Liberator In Venezuela
Venezuela was one of the very first colonies to gain their independence from Spain. At the time
Venezuela was a Spanish ruled colony and the people of Venezuela felt that Spain was ruling their
colony terribly (Adelblue). The people were led by Simon Bolivar, whose nickname was The
Liberator since he liberated Venezuela and worked with San Martin to liberate most of Northern South
America (Adelblue). Venezuela declared their independence in 1810 and finally gained their
independence after the Battle of Carabobo in 1821 (Minster). Three symbolic elements of the
Venezuelan Revolution are used to portray Simon Bolivar, the speech Simon gave to the Second
National Congress in 1819 to encourage the type of government he had in mind, and the high taxation
which was the main cause of the revolution (Ellis and Esler 705). In the monument to symbolize
Simon Bolivar, an incomplete statue of him was in the process of being completed by the people of
Venezuela. This is a representation of how Simon built and liberated Venezuela (Adelblue). The statue
is being built by the people of Venezuela just, as Simon built the country by freeing them, and by
establishing a strong foundation (Adelblue). The body of the statue is green to symbolize the growth
of the country and his pants are blue to symbolize independence. Simon was the commander of the
Venezuelan forces during the successful revolution against Spain (Martz and Heckler). Simon Bolivar
was nicknamed The Liberator (Adelblue).

American Workers Are More Beneficial And Cost Efficient...
Many American workers are at risk of losing their jobs to man made machinery. One author, Adam
Davidson, wrote Making It in America, and he argues that American workers are more beneficial and
cost efficient than machinery. He uses his interview with Standard Motor Products employee, Maddie
Parlier, to build his argument. Maddie is a low educated worker who was forced to take the job at
SMP when she became pregnant her senior year of high school. Though she was quick and effective
working the laser welding machine, the unskilled job increased her chance of being replaced by a
machine. Many manufacturing companies have found machines more efficient, but don t realize the
effect on American workers. Davidson builds his credibility with logical facts and statistics, and
displaying emotional appeals to influence the audience; however, by the end of his article, his ability
to influence his readers with his supporting facts strengthens his argument. Throughout Making It in
America, Davidson uses his personal experiences to strengthen his credibility and support his
argument. The author s sources come from personal interactions with the Standard Motor Products
Company, including interviews with Maddie Parlier, Luke Hutchins (skilled machinists at SMP), and
manager Tony Scalzitti. Tony comes to explain that, Maddie is cheaper than a machine, (Davidson

Alistair Macleod- Modern World Versus Traditional World Essay
Modern World versus Traditional World
The stories from Alistair Macleod s The Lost Salt Gift of Blood are often related to the lives of the
people of the Maritimes who are commonly miners, fishermen and farmers. The author repeatedly
examines similar themes and issues in his short stories such as isolation, choices versus consequences
and the concept of dying culture. However, the most prominent theme deals with the contrast between
the rural ways of life and the more modern city life. This theme is not only limited to the Maritime
culture; it is something that can be universally understood. His reason for utilizing this theme is to
prove that the modern way of life is not always better then the traditional ways. Alistair Macleod ...

This shows the difference between their lives in Montreal versus Cape Breton. Frequently throughout
Macleod s stories he presents a conflict between modernity and the traditional way of life.
The concept of the traditional world versus the modern world is a global phenomenon which is not
limited to the Maritime Provinces. In the world there are a multitude of cultures. Within any culture
there are deep rooted traditions that affect the way people view education, entertainment, and jobs.
However, due to the advances throughout the world a conflict between modernity and the traditional
world has arose. Throughout Alistair Macleod s The Lost Salt Gift of Blood collection, his stories
portray this conflict in a Maritime setting and mostly represent the conflict between the traditional
world and the modern world. The Golden Gift of Grey deals with the same theme; however, it is set
within Northern America. Throughout the story there are examples proving the more traditional ways
of life such as, They did not know the aching loneliness of which it spoke and when it floated from the
windows of the house on warm summer nights it branded their parents indelibly as hillbillies and they
themselves as well. (Macleod 93) This is a great point, showing that not only can this theme be prone
to the Maritimes but allows readers to consider that the theme is universally distributed.

Criticism Of Anne Sexton
Researching Anne Sexton is like untangling a giant mess of chains. Every time it seems solvable, a
new chain is discovered. Every source reveals a new mystery, but nobody really knows the full story
of anything in her life.
She began her writing as a form of therapy to help solve her depression (Harries). She wanted to
become a prostitute, but her therapist created this alternate solution (Margulies). She was described as
a confessionalist poet; These poets tend to write a lot more in detail about their life (Ruby). In the
1960 s, this was a new concept that many people were against, so she faced a lot of bad reviews and
criticisms.
Sexton grew up in Boston, Massachusetts with her dysfunctional parents, great aunt, and 2 sisters
(People). Her poetry reveals many hints that her father sexually abused her, but none of her family
members have confirmed anything. Her poem Angel of Clean Sheets describes a scene from after the
(assumed) rape of a child in great detail. Sexton uses sentence fragments such as Little bits of dried
blood. One hundred marks / upon the sheet. One hundred kisses in the dark (Sexton Clean Sheets) to
show the brokenness and confusion of an abused child. While this could just be based off of her
confirmed depression, many believe that she could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Literary Devices In Sleepy Hollow
Washington Irving:
The Author s Use of Fear Washington Irving is known as the father of the American Short Story. Not
only is he significant for the previous reason, but he is also famous for popularizing the Gothic Tale of
Terror. In terms of fear , Washington Irving is one of the most famous authors one would think of
when considering the term because his stories are set up quite literally to send chills down the reader s
spine as they read the story. Irving uses the literary device called effect to attain that reaction,
illustrating the efficiency of effect throughout his works. To begin, Washington Irving creates a sense
of fear through his use of effect at the beginning of the short story, Sleepy Hollow . Effect is a term
that describes the feeling or atmosphere in a story. Irving is the first author to use this effective writing
tool. It is very important in terms of setting up a story to draw in a reader and to make them believe in
the supernatural. In Sleepy Hollow , Irving uses effect from the very first paragraph that he writes. He
begins by describing how A small brook glides through [the valley], with just murmur enough to lull
one to repose; and the occasional whistle of a quail, or tapping of a woodpecker, is almost the only
sound that ever breaks in upon the uniform tranquility (756). The way Irving sets up the story from the
beginning is an almost eery quiet, leading you to believe that the town is something out of a
daydream. He is alluding to

Analysis Of DonT Growing Up Too Fast
Don t Grow Up Too Fast
Growing up doesn t need to be difficult, but it does require sincerity and honesty. This quote
exemplifies my opinion of this year quite well. I ve found that growing up means being honest. About
what I want. What I need. What I feel. Who I am. The song Vienna by Billy Joel is about growing up
and worrying about what the future holds. During my 8th grade, I found myself wallowing in what the
future would bring and how to grow up faster, but that resulted in wanting to take back what I had
been rushing through and trying to enjoy it.
The future can be an large focus of middle school students, and when 8th grade comes around and the
excitement of sign ups and clubs to join swims through the air, anyone can become incredibly stressed
out. My whole life has been the ongoing question of what s next? , and whether that nervosity was
about years or minutes ahead it always had a place in my head. This worry and wonder mustered up
quite a bit more during high school sign ups, and I began to search for justification in others about my
own future. In the song Vienna, Billy Joel sings You got your passion. You got your pride but don t
you know that only fools are satisfied? . This portrays the fact that during 8th grade, I knew what I
want, but I didn t know how to fulfill my goals while making others happy. I worried that even if I did
what I wanted, the outcome would consist of unhappy people and an unfulfilled goal. Though this
worry consumed much of my

The Role Of Parents Sport Socialization Of Youth
Research Paper:
The Role of Parents in Sport Socialization of Youth
Lucas Eckert
PSE4UO
Introduction Socialization is the process in which an individual becomes a member of society. Parents
are the most significant agent in the socialization of their children. They have a tremendous influence
on the type of people their children grow up to be. They pass on their beliefs and values to their
children and influence their child s personality and morals. In sports, there is also a process of
socialization, in which the individual becomes a part of the athletic community. In this process,
parents also posses significant influence over their children (Quinton, 2012). They decide whether or
not their children play sports, which sports their children may play, and they can greatly affect their
child s enjoyment and performance in the sport. This influence can either lead to positive or negative
effects on the children s experience with sport. This depends on the level of involvement and the
nature of that involvement (Shwarzlose, 2013). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the ways by
which parents influence their child s process of socialization in sport, and identify the positive and
negative effects associated with the different methods. This paper will also provide several case
studies of professional athletes and evaluate the parents involvement in the athletes career.
Pressure to Participate The most basic form of influence the parent possesses over the

Richard Rorty s Justice As A Larger Loyalty
Rorty, Richard. Justice as a Larger Loyalty. In Bontekoe, Ron and Marietta Stepaniants (eds.), Justice
and Democracy: Cross Cultural Perspectives. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 1997, pp. 9 22.
Rorty (1977) introduces his argumentative stance that justice is primarily a sub category of loyalty,
and not a modern day moral duty founded on reasoning and intuition. He presents several scenarios
from day to day life and encourages the reader to contemplate how they would react to the situations.
He then analyzes their responses with regard to whether it was justice or loyalty that was
demonstrated and evaluates the catalyst that instigates the reaction. (9) Rorty outlines his liberal
ironist in contradiction to the free thinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He proposes the question of whether man would rather share his food with the neighbors and risk
starvation or would he take guns and fight them off? Another case he puts forth is a case of lifeboats.
Would he fight off other people to secure a lifeboat for his family or would he rather perish along with
them? In these two exemplars, the implication is that a man s loyalty to his family surpasses the
loyalty he perceives towards other people. Justice will be replaced by his loyalty and depending on the
level of commitment to particular family members, he will act in favor of them. The argument of
loyalty, says Rorty, is the principle pillar in the reactions of human beings. Justice and its implications
are an extension of the loyalty to the larger community. Justice serves as a channel to loyalty to those
people that he may feel he has loyalty to (Rorty, 1977, p.141 146 Pushing the concept of justice, a
degree higher to globalization, Rorty says Americans are more loyal to fellow Americans than to the
people in Botswana, Africa. When it comes to matters affecting all, a man s conduct will be in favor of
his countrymen. An exception is the businessman who imports cheap labor from third world countries
since the American labor is too costly. When faced with the accusation of disloyalty to his country, he
feigns justice that necessitates fair treatment to all

Theme Of Fate In Oedipus The King
Oedipus the King: Fate or Free will Throughout Oedipus the King, the concept of fate and free will
plays an essential part in Oedipus destruction. This story describes the suffering of Oedipus as a result
of a misfortune of which he has no control over. Oedipus is a play that demonstrates how a person s
life can either be destined to take a certain path or be based on the decisions a person makes
throughout their life. There are no oracles or prophecies that can determine how an individual s life
turns out to be, but according to Sophocles the gods cursed Oedipus even before he was born. This is a
tragic event of a conflict between the powerful gods, his blindness, a man s inability to change his
destiny and his intelligence. Oedipus does not deserve all the tragedies that happened to him, and he is
a victim of fate. The gods had already proclaimed Oedipus fate even before he knew it. His fate has
been bound since the day he was born and there is no way it can be avoided. The herdsman says If you
are the man he says you are, you re bred to misery . (1361 1362) This means that he was born to be
miserable, no matter what kind of person he turns out to be. Everyone already knew the outcome
would turn out horrible as it is expected. E.R Dodds says ...is that man has no free will but is a puppet
in the hands of the gods who pull the strings that make him dance. (35) This shows how the gods are
controlling him and his future life. The gods had cursed him which means he has been controlled since
the beginning just like puppets. This metaphor serves as a perfect example of what Oedipus goes
through.
Some of his actions were unintentional, however some of them were ignorant and this is what s
stopping him from uncovering the truth. The day Oedipus meets Teiresias, he tells him that Oedipus is
the murderer of Laius. Oedipus cannot believe that Teiresias would say such things. He was not
convinced of the reality and accuses Teiresias of being a liar. Oedipus says Not twice shall say
calumnies like this and stay unpunished . (415 416) Oedipus is considered ignorant because although
he is given knowledge from the wiser character, he chooses to ignore the facts and continue looking
for the killer. Gould mentions

The Role Of Enkidu In The Epic Of Gilgamesh
Written thousands of years ago, The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem that documents the life of
Gilgamesh. As two thirds god, one third mortal, and King of Uruk, Gilgamesh claims to be the most
powerful man on Earth. With his fitting title, he built grandiose architectures, such as the towers of
Ishtar and Anu, walls, and gardens. However, his reign would soon be challenged by Enkidu, a man
made of clay and raised by the wilderness. A creation of Aruru, Enkidu was the solution to the prayers
of the citizen of Uruk. They hope that Enkidu will defeat Gilgamesh and end his tyranny.
Upon learning that Gilgamesh was a selfish King, Enkidu sets out to defeat Gilgamesh. Their fight in
the city of Uruk was intense, as ground pulsing shockwaves shook

Hong Kong Landfill Problem
Turn landfill problem into history
With the wasteful lifestyle of Hong Kong citizens, the 4 major landfills in Hong Kong are going to be
saturated. From the government s words, these landfills will be fully saturated before late 2010s. The
situation is getting worse in these years, as people have no improvement in their consumption style.
They are not aware of their responsibility on reducing waste. Also, people cannot develop the routine
on recycling, and send much unnecessary rubbish to the landfill. With the rare land resources in Hong
Kong, we cannot offer any more land to extend or construct a new landfill. If we still do nothing and
continue the trend, the problem on waste treatment will cause an enormous amount of cost for the ...

People in developing countries may not be aware of the consequences of waste disposal in their area,
as they only consider whether they can get food to survive. Environmental protection is a luxury for
them. This may cause deep rooted and irreversible effects to the countries. Developed cities should
help developing countries, but not to increase their burden and exploit their rights.
When we look deep into incineration, is incineration effective to reduce the pressure on landfills? In
fact, this is only a shortsighted measure comparing with the PATY system. When incinerators are built,
people will consider the problem solved and ignore the problem for a long time. However, this will
only increase people s reliance on incinerators. Lau (2008) observes the situation in Singapore and
points out that the citizens in Singapore need to bear a high financial burden on incineration (¶ 4).
Singapore overlooks the importance of waste reduction and keeps on building incinerators to satisfy
the increasing waste volume every 5 to 7 years. They need to spend at least HK$8 billion to build an
incinerator, and the operating cost of each incinerators costs over HK$250 million per year. The
geographical size of Singapore is smaller than Hong Kong, but it already has built 4 incinerators. The
cost is too high for Hong Kong to bear and it is very difficult to choose a suitable place to build the
incinerators. The residents near the

  • 2. John Millington Synge s Romantic Vision of the Aran... John Millington Synge s Romantic Vision of the Aran Islands When John Millington Synge made his way to the western most islands of Ireland he was in search of inspiration for his writing. The fruit of his journey was the fame winning book entitled The Aran Islands . Synge had many purposes for this book, but one of the most compelling was his desire to write an anthropologically geared account of the people and lifestyle of what many believed to be the last bastion of true Irishness. However, Synge s anthropological work could not avoid the strong Romantic tendencies that influenced his writing. In my opinion it is Synge s Romanticism that makes his account more believable. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Part One of the book he begins by relating the image of the Aranmor countryside as he walks through it for the first time. He states: I was wandering out along the one good roadway of the island, looking over low walls on either side into small flat fields of naked rock. I have seen nothing so desolate. Grey floods of water were sweeping everywhere upon the limestone, making at times a wild torrent of the road... Whenever the cloud lifted I could see the edge of the sea below me on the right, and the naked ridge of the island above me on the other side... (Synge 2) The most vivid aspect of this passage is the diction, which Synge uses to describe the island s environment. More than once Synge uses the word naked to refer to the rock. He also builds further that image by calling the land desolate and wild . Synge also makes an important play of the colors of the Aran Islands. He uses the images of grey and black quite often throughout the book. At one point he states that everywhere he turns he finds, ...the same grey obsession twining and wreathing itself among the narrow fields... (Synge 46). By describing the island thus he helps the reader build the image of the Aran Islands as something quite distinct from the lushness of the Irish mainland. The contrast between the environment of the islands and the mainland is important for Synge to establish, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Participatory Culture Paper It s no secret that people are engaging more and more with the Internet and social media everyday. A simple Google search can lead you to various discussion forums, Tumblr blogs, and a plethora of hash tagged Tweets. The Internet is an interactive medium, and as users of that medium, we have access to innumerable amounts of data and information previous generations could only dream of. With the rise of an interactive, communicative platform, people and companies can send and receive messages instantaneously. Take the phenomenon of live tweeting for example: audience members (particularly fans) watching a television show in real time can provide instant feedback of their responses, and using particular hashtags, can have their responses appear ... The Internet provides a space where this participatory culture can thrive. Discussion based forums and boards are especially active places where fans can interact. According to Jenkins, message boards and forums become knowledge communities that structure and organize the fans knowledge about a particular text (Booth, 2010, pp. 37 38). From these interactive online hubs, fans can work together to create distinct meanings unique to their fan culture and themselves, according to media scholar Paul Booth: Dialogue through forums and listservs create meaning for the members of the community separated from the meaning contained (or read) within the extant media object (Booth, 2010, pp. 37 38). Discussion boards and forums aren t the only places where this type of interaction occurs; blogs are another place where fans can engage in this participatory culture. Blogs, and more importantly, their ability to comment and provide feedback are integral to the interactivity and productivity of online fandom. According to Booth, Comments become a way for the blog to elicit feedback and participation by members of a community. This ability to provide instantaneous feedback fulfills the desire of instant gratification and fosters the ability to communicate more effectively as a collective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Bhopal, Bhopal And Its Effects Thirty years ago in Bhopal, India, an accident at the Union Carbide pesticide plant led to around thirty tons of highly toxic gases to fill the air and spread through the nearby towns. When the accident occurred, over 600,000 people were exposed to the very deadly gas. Over the past years, 15,000 people have been killed by the disaster and it s effects. (Union Carbide Corporation, 2001 2014) Toxic material still remains in Bhopal to this day. (Taylor, 2014) This accident occurred in 1984 at the Union Carbide plant, which had been established in Bhopal in 1969. Reports began months before the disaster of the possibility of a huge accident. Staff had been being laid off for weeks prior and that had led to less and less safety checks. (Taylor, 2014) The gas that leaked is named Methyl Isocyanine. Methyl Isocyanine is used as a popular pesticide. When in it s liquid form, the chemical is odorless and very flammable. In a gas though, it is highly toxic and irritating. The organic compound can also be found in small amounts in certain cigarettes. Union Carbide was using Methyl Isocyanate as an intermediate. Methylamine was made to react with phosgene to produce the Methyl Isocyanate, which then reacts with 1 naphthol to form carbonyl, which is the final product. The accident was triggered when water entered Tank E610, which contained more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate, initiating a runaway reaction. It can motivate people to explore more effective ways to do their jobs or it can utterly discourage such efforts. Here are a few tips and traps: Establish a clear link between what people are rewarded for and the organization s priorities. Does everyone see and understand the relationship between their improvements and financial rewards? Too many profit sharing plans, for example, are disconnected from daily work. Professional growth and development opportunities Supervisors may provide employees opportunities to participate in educational programs or other activities that will expand their skills/knowledge . Employees benefit by developing new skills, and the institution benefits from the additional expertise individuals bring to the job. A recent survey found that 87% of responding workers viewed special training as a positive incentive, and it appeared most meaningful to employees with postgraduate education. Bend has been said to be one of the whitest places to live , yet I never viewed a city by its race. Being racist to me meant that it was the whites who had a problem with the blacks and whites didn t want anything to do with blacks. I hadn t actually seen racism in action from anyone here. Racism, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s almost as if racism is becoming a huge excuse for problems that are happening in this world. Racism is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others (Dictionary). I never viewed racism as blaming things on skin color but that s what it is. Racism is based on a skin color and culture, not on school shootings and world events. To say that two African American teens organized a school shooting because all the people in his school were being racist towards him and everyone noticed those racist acts that would make sense. To say that when two white teens started acting differently and everyone still saw them as normal would have been caught if they were black, doesn t make sense. Those teens, whether their skin color was black or white, still would have been viewed as teens just going through a phase . With the stereotype that teenagers fall into no matter what their skin color, people will jump to conclusions and suspect them of something. Cochabamba s economy cannot afford the necessary infrastructure to ensure everyone access to safe water. In the long run, water is conserved, solving the water crisis and providing water to all Bolivian families. 2 What is the political climate in Bolivia? Will it support your bid? Richer citizens are capable of getting by with safe water, but poorer settlements have limited access to water and are desperately in need of a privatized water system. In Villa San Miguel, the residents had recently dug a well, increasing their access to water. As Finnegan states, Clean water was suddenly plentiful and relatively cheap households paid the water cooperative between two and five dollars a month to cover the costs of running the pump and maintaining the system. [4]. Through the foundation of a new, inexpensive water source, this well provided water to 210 families. The expenses are covered by the townspeople, whom collectively can fund cheaper water sources compared with public access. Although this drastically decreases the number of people without water access, this is not a sustainable water source and will soon run out, excentrifying pollution and halting access. As for people without public access nor locally funded water sources struggle to survive with minimal water and the diseases acquired by pollutants. The population is growing, and Cochabamba does not have a water system in place to support all community members, resulting in an increase of people without water. • 11. The Never-Ending Financial Crisis of 2008 Since it began in 2008, the US has faced what is being called the great recession. It is 2013, and it is clear apparent that it is a recession longing to be cured. Through the works of Putnam, Sum et. al., Wisman, and Colander, we can better understand this crisis and look for the best way to get out of it. To begin, Robert Putnam describes what has occurred in the U.S. over the past several decades. He states that over the past several decades the U.S. has been subject to [an] economic and cultural [entanglement] a mixture of government, private sector, community and personal failings (Putnam 2013, III). Putnam believes that this financial crisis occurred as a result of layoffs, and many closings of businesses (Putnam 2013, 2). We can further this understanding by turning to Sum, et. al., who believed that the crisis occurred due to the blue collar workers who have lost their jobs, and might never see those jobs again (Sum, et. al. 2010, 6). Our next economist to turn to is John D. Wisman. In his article he describes what he believes to be the cause of the crisis. He states that this recession occurred centered upon inadequate regulation stemming from laissez faire ideology, and low interest rates (Wisman 2013, 921). He further points out that an underlying effect of wage stagnation and dramatically increasing inequality in the US over the past 35 years may also be a cause. While Ali s head is turned at forty five degrees, he remains to have eye contact with the viewers, which means he is not afraid to show the world who he is and how he wants to be represented. Furthermore, the bold stance of his fists carefully placed on his hips and his shoulders slightly forward exemplifies his fearlessness and confidence that he has in himself and that many others who chant his name know him to be. Lee Carlo Castaneda Professor Clark American Studies 23 November 2015 In Flower Drum Song Flower Drum Song was based on the 1957 novel, The Flower Drum Song, by Chinese American author C. Y. Lee. It was the eighth stage musical by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The piece opened in 1958 on Broadway and was subsequently made into a 1961 musical film. The team hired Gene Kelly (famous for Singin in the Rain) to make his debut as a stage director with the musical and scoured the country for their cast. With the exception of Juanita Hall (who also starred in Rodgers Hammerstein s South Pacific), the main cast is mostly Asian. This dichotomy reinforces the orientalist notion of the West as male and the East as the female. But, despite these differences, they both share a crucial value: preserving the patriarchal system, even if it results in their own commodification. When analyzed in the barest of terms, both of these women want to get married, and their actions steer them towards that objective. Incidentally, in striving toward that goal, they become things, not people. Mei Li allows herself to be inspected like an animal or manufactured product, and Linda s song I Enjoy Being a Girl places the utmost importance on her appearance, not her personality or intellect. Race Representation and the Generation Gap One way that representation of race manifests itself in Flower Drum Song is through a generation gap: the older versus newer generation. If we compare Ta to his father, there is a clear distinction in both their dress and their speech. Ta wears American suits and ties while Master Wang wears stereotypical Chinese garb. He even accidentally burns his suit when he is forced to wear one. Wang also holds on to a more traditional way of doing things. • 21. The Bishop Orders His Tomb And My Last Duchess In his poems, The Bishop Orders His Tomb , Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister , and My Last Duchess , Browning explores a few sins that link to Victorian ideas yet continue to be compelling commentary on some of the modernity s biggest contradictions. These characters process the world according to their own selfish ideologies, filtering into dramatic monologues that challenge and comment on the time s social norms and growing institutions. The narrator of Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister is resentful and irrationally petty contrary to the monolithic idea of a monk. In My Last Duchess charm thinly veils the tyrannical nature of a respected Duke. Lastly, the bishop of The Bishop Orders His Tomb is sour with greed, jealousy, vanity, and resentment. These characters act out of their socially prescribed nature and this, I think, is ultimately a critique of Victorian ideals of order, structure, poise, domesticity and perfection. These ideas of people and institutions rarely reflect the reality. In Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister , a Spanish monk monologues about his irrational hatred for a Brother Lawrence. He mocks with disdain, creates ideas of Brother Lawrence that paint him in an undesirable light, dreams of sabotaging the monk s garden of melons, and even concocts a plan that will presumably send Brother Lawrence to hell. Such bitterness is punctuated by the idea that this monk would be willing to sell his soul simply for the pleasure of enacting Brother ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. The Trial And The Metamorphosis Joanna Martinez Ms. Tobenkin AP Literature, Period 4 22 May 2016 Senior Project Essay The Trial and The Metamorphosis are the two foremost works Franz Kafka has ever written. By doing this, Franz makes the similarities and differences very obvious, yet each text is complex in their own way. In The Trial and The Metamorphosis, Kafka uses unique aspects to compare the characters in each novel. Each character is being forced by anonymous forces. They both go through loneliness to find the meaning behind their suffering. Each similarity and difference in The Trial and The Metamorphosis, come along with complexity that gives readers a deeper psychological view. In having these similarities and differences, it can be arguable that the characters had inevitable deaths. At the end, their death may or may not have been preventable which shows their struggle in each story. In both, The Trial and The Metamorphosis, the characters never find out who the anonymous forces are. This is one of the dominant issues of both stories which concludes to be one of the similarities. One of the examples would be from The Trial, in this scene of The Trial, Joseph K is leaving the bank and as he is passing by a lumber room, he realizes that some of the warders are getting beaten. He asked for the man beating them to stop but the man did not listen and continued to beat them. The difference between these stories is that they handle their situation in a very different ways. The seven characteristics of a leader that Jack Welch looks for in a leader emphasizes more on one area than the others. There is more emphasis on the heart than the other areas. From the ideology of the analogy, I discovered that Jack Welch`s characteristics have about 71 % of it concentrated on the heart. In annexing the Philippines, we were being conquistadors, comparable to Spain, who we were fighting at the time. • 26. Passing, By Nella Larsen Mariem Kakeh Prof. Kangyl Ko English 63 10 October 6, 2015 Midterm Essay Passing, by Nella Larsen Passing, by Nella Larsen is a novel all about pretending to be something that you are not. It is about giving everyone the impression that everything is in order when in reality everything is falling apart. Passing in this novel refers to the ability of a person to be classified as one thing, normally a social group, while belonging to a different group. Passing is usually done to gain class or acceptance by groups other than one s own. The primary focus of the novel is on racial passing which is the ability to look white and belong to a white group when in reality the person is an African American in order to gain privileges that were unavailable to them. Although racial passing is the main focus, another major theme in this novel is sexual passing and identity. Sexual passing refers to a person s ability to be judged or viewed as a heterosexual person but in reality they are homosexual or bisexual. This was a masked theme in the novel because in the early 1900 s, homosexuality was not something that was accepted. Larsen made it aware that these were real problems in those times without coming out directly and saying it. The main plot of Passing focuses on two light skinned black women, Irene Redfield and her old time friend Clare Kendry. Both women can pass as white women. By the word investigate, he means observation. It is only in the process of observation that we can learn the reality of what is. In the innocence of simple observation there can be no judgement or holding to anything that is seen. • 28. Analysis Of Cathedral By Raymond Carver A New Perspective Everyone at one point has judged a book by its cover. In the short story, Cathedral , Raymond Carver creates a narrator who bases off ideas and assumptions about blind people from movies. The narrator has never interacted with a blind person before the day where his wife invites her friend, who is named Robert, to stay. The narrator and Robert have never met, but the narrator has a strong dislike towards Robert before meeting. The narrator s closed mindedness and misconceptions leads him to judge Robert, however after a few hours of interaction, the narrator learns more about him and grows to have a new perspective about people not being who they think they are. The narrator is pre judgemental towards all people who are blind, whether or not he has met them. He believes all blind people are the same as those he has watched in movies. The narrator perception of the blind is that they moved slowly and never laughed and when they went out they were led by seeing eye dogs (Carver 104). The movie industry creates a false image of the blind, which leads to the narrator s assumptions. However, the blind are not all the same, just like how everyone else in the world are not the same. People are designed to be different in their personalities, thoughts, looks and much more. The question posed is; can we as humans do anything to save ourselves from eternal damnation, or are we doomed from birth. The play deals with Faustus struggle to understand sin and its effect on the human soul. There is a interesting scene where the seven deadly sins appear before Faustus. He replied: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:37 40). Since the entire law of God is according to the words of Jesus, this scripture is merely a commentary on the wonderful principles of love. If this is so, then sin should be defined in terms of a lack of love, rather than as a formal law. According to this point of view a sin is any failure to love God and our fellow man with a perfect heart, which then a lack of love would lead to certain attitudes and deeds which are displeasing to God. Keeping this in mind we can proceed to see how sins are classified. There are two categories of sin, mortal sin and venial sin. We commit mortal sins when we break a commandment of God in a serious manner, for example, idolatry, adultery, murder, slander. These are all things that are contrary to the love that we owe God. Jesus taught that even looking at a woman lustfully is a sin. To field a women s rugby team, the basic needs include: 1) a pool of existing or incoming students that want to play, 2) a coach, 3) a soccer sized field for practice and competition, and 4) developing a schedule with local, regional and national competitive opportunities. In terms of fear , Washington Irving is one of the most famous authors one would think of when considering the term because his stories are set up quite literally to send chills down the reader s spine as they read the story. Irving uses the literary device called effect to attain that reaction, illustrating the efficiency of effect throughout his works. To begin, Washington Irving creates a sense of fear through his use of effect at the beginning of the short story, Sleepy Hollow . Effect is a term that describes the feeling or atmosphere in a story. Irving is the first author to use this effective writing tool. It is very important in terms of setting up a story to draw in a reader and to make them believe in the supernatural. In Sleepy Hollow , Irving uses effect from the very first paragraph that he writes. He begins by describing how A small brook glides through [the valley], with just murmur enough to lull one to repose; and the occasional whistle of a quail, or tapping of a woodpecker, is almost the only sound that ever breaks in upon the uniform tranquility (756). The way Irving sets up the story from the beginning is an almost eery quiet, leading you to believe that the town is something out of a daydream. He is alluding to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Analysis Of DonT Growing Up Too Fast Don t Grow Up Too Fast Growing up doesn t need to be difficult, but it does require sincerity and honesty. This quote exemplifies my opinion of this year quite well. I ve found that growing up means being honest. About what I want. What I need. What I feel. Who I am. The song Vienna by Billy Joel is about growing up and worrying about what the future holds. During my 8th grade, I found myself wallowing in what the future would bring and how to grow up faster, but that resulted in wanting to take back what I had been rushing through and trying to enjoy it. The future can be an large focus of middle school students, and when 8th grade comes around and the excitement of sign ups and clubs to join swims through the air, anyone can become incredibly stressed out. My whole life has been the ongoing question of what s next? , and whether that nervosity was about years or minutes ahead it always had a place in my head. This worry and wonder mustered up quite a bit more during high school sign ups, and I began to search for justification in others about my own future. In the song Vienna, Billy Joel sings You got your passion. You got your pride but don t you know that only fools are satisfied? . This portrays the fact that during 8th grade, I knew what I want, but I didn t know how to fulfill my goals while making others happy. I worried that even if I did what I wanted, the outcome would consist of unhappy people and an unfulfilled goal. Though this worry consumed much of my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The Role Of Parents Sport Socialization Of Youth Research Paper: The Role of Parents in Sport Socialization of Youth Lucas Eckert PSE4UO Introduction Socialization is the process in which an individual becomes a member of society. Parents are the most significant agent in the socialization of their children. They have a tremendous influence on the type of people their children grow up to be. They pass on their beliefs and values to their children and influence their child s personality and morals. In sports, there is also a process of socialization, in which the individual becomes a part of the athletic community. In this process, parents also posses significant influence over their children (Quinton, 2012). They decide whether or not their children play sports, which sports their children may play, and they can greatly affect their child s enjoyment and performance in the sport. This influence can either lead to positive or negative effects on the children s experience with sport. This depends on the level of involvement and the nature of that involvement (Shwarzlose, 2013). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the ways by which parents influence their child s process of socialization in sport, and identify the positive and negative effects associated with the different methods. This paper will also provide several case studies of professional athletes and evaluate the parents involvement in the athletes career. Pressure to Participate The most basic form of influence the parent possesses over the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Richard Rorty s Justice As A Larger Loyalty Rorty, Richard. Justice as a Larger Loyalty. In Bontekoe, Ron and Marietta Stepaniants (eds.), Justice and Democracy: Cross Cultural Perspectives. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 1997, pp. 9 22. Rorty (1977) introduces his argumentative stance that justice is primarily a sub category of loyalty, and not a modern day moral duty founded on reasoning and intuition. He presents several scenarios from day to day life and encourages the reader to contemplate how they would react to the situations. He then analyzes their responses with regard to whether it was justice or loyalty that was demonstrated and evaluates the catalyst that instigates the reaction. (9) Rorty outlines his liberal ironist in contradiction to the free thinking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He proposes the question of whether man would rather share his food with the neighbors and risk starvation or would he take guns and fight them off? Another case he puts forth is a case of lifeboats. Would he fight off other people to secure a lifeboat for his family or would he rather perish along with them? In these two exemplars, the implication is that a man s loyalty to his family surpasses the loyalty he perceives towards other people. Justice will be replaced by his loyalty and depending on the level of commitment to particular family members, he will act in favor of them. The argument of loyalty, says Rorty, is the principle pillar in the reactions of human beings. Justice and its implications are an extension of the loyalty to the larger community. Justice serves as a channel to loyalty to those people that he may feel he has loyalty to (Rorty, 1977, p.141 146 Pushing the concept of justice, a degree higher to globalization, Rorty says Americans are more loyal to fellow Americans than to the people in Botswana, Africa. When it comes to matters affecting all, a man s conduct will be in favor of his countrymen. An exception is the businessman who imports cheap labor from third world countries since the American labor is too costly. • 46. Theme Of Fate In Oedipus The King Oedipus the King: Fate or Free will Throughout Oedipus the King, the concept of fate and free will plays an essential part in Oedipus destruction. This story describes the suffering of Oedipus as a result of a misfortune of which he has no control over. Oedipus is a play that demonstrates how a person s life can either be destined to take a certain path or be based on the decisions a person makes throughout their life. There are no oracles or prophecies that can determine how an individual s life turns out to be, but according to Sophocles the gods cursed Oedipus even before he was born. This is a tragic event of a conflict between the powerful gods, his blindness, a man s inability to change his destiny and his intelligence. Oedipus does not deserve all the tragedies that happened to him, and he is a victim of fate. The gods had already proclaimed Oedipus fate even before he knew it. His fate has been bound since the day he was born and there is no way it can be avoided. The herdsman says If you are the man he says you are, you re bred to misery . (1361 1362) This means that he was born to be miserable, no matter what kind of person he turns out to be. Everyone already knew the outcome would turn out horrible as it is expected. E.R Dodds says ...is that man has no free will but is a puppet in the hands of the gods who pull the strings that make him dance. (35) This shows how the gods are controlling him and his future life. The gods had cursed him which means he has been controlled since the beginning just like puppets. This metaphor serves as a perfect example of what Oedipus goes through. Some of his actions were unintentional, however some of them were ignorant and this is what s stopping him from uncovering the truth. The day Oedipus meets Teiresias, he tells him that Oedipus is the murderer of Laius. Oedipus cannot believe that Teiresias would say such things. He was not convinced of the reality and accuses Teiresias of being a liar. Oedipus says Not twice shall say calumnies like this and stay unpunished . (415 416) Oedipus is considered ignorant because although he is given knowledge from the wiser character, he chooses to ignore the facts and continue looking for the killer. Gould mentions ... • 48. Hong Kong Landfill Problem Turn landfill problem into history With the wasteful lifestyle of Hong Kong citizens, the 4 major landfills in Hong Kong are going to be saturated. From the government s words, these landfills will be fully saturated before late 2010s. The situation is getting worse in these years, as people have no improvement in their consumption style. They are not aware of their responsibility on reducing waste. Also, people cannot develop the routine on recycling, and send much unnecessary rubbish to the landfill. With the rare land resources in Hong Kong, we cannot offer any more land to extend or construct a new landfill. If we still do nothing and continue the trend, the problem on waste treatment will cause an enormous amount of cost for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People in developing countries may not be aware of the consequences of waste disposal in their area, as they only consider whether they can get food to survive. Environmental protection is a luxury for them. This may cause deep rooted and irreversible effects to the countries. Developed cities should help developing countries, but not to increase their burden and exploit their rights. When we look deep into incineration, is incineration effective to reduce the pressure on landfills? In fact, this is only a shortsighted measure comparing with the PATY system. When incinerators are built, people will consider the problem solved and ignore the problem for a long time. However, this will only increase people s reliance on incinerators. Lau (2008) observes the situation in Singapore and points out that the citizens in Singapore need to bear a high financial burden on incineration (¶ 4). Singapore overlooks the importance of waste reduction and keeps on building incinerators to satisfy the increasing waste volume every 5 to 7 years. They need to spend at least HK$8 billion to build an incinerator, and the operating cost of each incinerators costs over HK$250 million per year. The geographical size of Singapore is smaller than Hong Kong, but it already has built 4 incinerators. The cost is too high for Hong Kong to bear and it is very difficult to choose a suitable place to build the incinerators. The residents near the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
