INTRODUCTION AND BUILDING HISTORY
Carlo Scarpa s approach and theory to designing with existing buildings is an
innovation that is relevant to buildings even today. The Castelvecchio museum is
one of his greatest projects, and thoroughly reveals his way of working. Scarpas
intention was not only to restore an aging building but to do so in a way that creates
dialogue between the new and the old. By careful work of demolition and
preservation, he literally cuts, shifts and adds elements to the existing building in
order to create an exhibition of the building s past, and its connection to modernity.
In order for him to make informed decisions about what to preserve and what to
demolish, he had to have a thorough understanding of the building s political history.
The Castelvecchio dates back as far as the 12th century, and has undergone four eras
of development in its lifetime. The commune wall is the oldest element in the
building and was the second of three large fortifications in Verona(Fig 1.1). In 1354,
the Castelvecchio was built by the Scaligeri family, the Lords of Verona, and was
built for their own defense against the citizens for times of revolt. It was built either
side of the commune wall, and consisted of a three story residence or Reggia around
an inner court and an outer military zone (Fig 1.2). The Castelvecchio continued this
military function until 1797, where Napoleon and his troops claimed residence

When determining an opinion on any argument, it is important to start with the facts.
In a survey taken by John Villasenor, forty percent of college students surveyed
believe that hate speech is not protected by the first amendment, and twenty percent
believe violence used to stop hate speech is acceptable. All those students are wrong.
Hate speech is protected by the first amendment, and using violence as justification
for ending hate speech is not legal.
While not everyone in society has to be a constitutional expert, college students today
are tomorrow s future lawyers, judges, police officers, etc. They need to at least know
the extent of the first amendment in the United States. Additionally, these students
should know that since hate speech is protected, responding with violence is by no
means the answer as they will be the only ones to find themselves in jail. These
students must lower their fists, and pull out the textbooks and construct the picket
signs, using vigorous debate and peaceful protests as their response to bigotry.

Becoming A Television Journalist For A Local News Station
I aspire to become a broadcast journalist for a local news station, an author, and an
editor. I plan to confer the most interesting stories out to the world. I also plan to
publish my novel that I am currently working on along with other fiction stories.
Although it is not definite how my journey will begin and end, I do have a certain
path I plan to proceed. First, I want to finish my undergraduate at my dream school,
Temple University in the School of Media and Communications. After I finish my
four years with a strong foundation on being a journalist I want to further my
knowledge at Emerson Collegeor Syracuse University.
My goal is not easy and it also is not cheap. Six years of college for me is not free.
During college I am going to face many financial hardships. For starters, going into
my freshman year at Temple University is going to be rough. Not only did my
mother not get a pell grant I also did not qualify for more than 60% of the
scholarships that offered full tuition. I live with my mother and sister. My mother
is an educated women who graduated from Bryant University. As of now she
works with Dana Farber as a computer technician. My mother gets paid good money
but she also has to provide for my sister and I alone. Paying for college is going to be
a struggle, but it most definitely is a struggle that is worth it. I always have

The music of the 19th and 20th centuries is classified as late Classical and Romantic
