Looking Glass Wars Theme
In The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor, the story of Alice in Wonderland is retold, but with
a twist. Instead of Alice going to Wonderland because she wants to live in a different place, Alice
(Alyss) lives in Wonderland, and the book was written about her life. Alyss experiences many
obstacles in her journey to the real world. She ends up in England where she is then convinced
that Wonderland isn t real and that it was all just her imagination. However, to her surprise, she
ends up back in Wonderland and back in the same troubles in which she left behind. By changing
the plot of the story, the themes of the original story have been tweaked. One of the major themes
in this book is love and sacrifice. This theme is shown mainly through three... Show more content

Alyss is the princess (soon to be queen) of Wonderland. Alyss loved her home in Wonderland
very much, so when she entered the real world, she would get into fights because people made
fun of her for believing it was real. Alyss got into fights and traded insults with her tormentors,
often returning home scraped, bruised, and humiliated. (128). She is standing up for what she
believes in (Wonderland) and if that means that she is going to be beat up, so be it. Alyss also
sacrificed her life when she was fighting Redd to regain her place on the throne. She didn t fight
for just herself, she fought for everyone in Wonderland that is being held under Redd s rules. I m
stronger than you are, Redd (347). In conclusion, Alyss is a very brave princess and she has taken
many sacrifices to ensure the safety of her queendom as her mother had done before

College Should Be Unobtainable
College is one of the most fundamental institutions in our modern world. It s a place where
children go to further their education and where most of our future doctors, politicians, and
scientists are made. Nelson Mandela once said, Education is the most powerful weapon for
changing the world. In the past several years, rates are increasing higher than inflation and
becoming even more unobtainable for families. Collegeshould be more affordable for the
following three reasons. First off, student debt should be less of an issue. Secondly, a more
educated country would increase the country s economy and it would give us social benefits. After
people graduate from college, if their degree warrants filling a necessary void in the workplace,

Gary Wockner s Argument For Using More Water
Snow falls gracefully from the sky, landing atop the beautiful Rocky Mountains. When that snow
melts into water, it collects into streams, which run into rivers, and low down into the plains and
further into different states. That water that originally fell as snow will be collected and pumped
into thousands of homes, businesses, and farmlands in order to supply thousands of people with
safe drinking water. One thing people generally do not concern themselves with, is water usage,
and so in the United States alone, approximately 3580,000 million gallons of water was used, with
70 percent of that coming from surface water (Price 1). With so much water usage, the demand has
already outgrown supply, and new ways of providing that supply have been... Show more content on

Since the reservoir would only be within five miles of Fort Collins, Petschek wonders what
would happen when there would be too much water within the proposed Glade Reservoir and
they would need to release the excess water. Petschek fears that releasing water back into the
River, especially so close to the major city, would induce more flooding and destroy more
property, especially considering there have already been two 100 year floods within 17 years. So,
Petschek attempts to induce fear within the reader that putting a reservoir down cause more
flooding, and abandoning the Glade Reservoir would be a better idea than putting hundreds of

The Role Of Heteronormativity In New Girl
Heteronormativity is when heterosexuality believed to be the only natural norm in our society
for sexual orientation. New Girl , an American sitcom, aired in 2011 on Fox, follows Jess (Zooey
Deschanel) as she lives in a loft in Los Angeles with three men she meets on Craigslist. The
second episode of the second season is what will be focused on in this essay. During which Jess
meets a stranger when he accidentally mistakes her for his blind date, Nick (Jake Johnson)
believes he has met his future self, and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) tries to make a good impression
on Winston s (Lamorne Morris) mom and sister. The writers of New Girl follow basic genderroles
within the story lines of the television show. The show follows a heteronormative plot. Through
examining New Girl , a viewer can see the issues arise when considering the portrayal of men and
women in media, and heteronormativity in television shows.
Within television, there is often a sense of heteronormativity that is shown through heterosexual
relationships and a lack of representation of LGBT+ community. While New Girl has four main
characters, all who have active social/sexual lives, all are interested in the opposite sex. In fact,
there is not even talk about any sexual orientation other than being attracted to the opposite sex. As
Jess is juggling two men interested in her; Schmidt and Nick tell her that there comes a time in
every person s life when for no reason whatsoever they are irresistible to the

Essay about SUN Microsystems Case Analysis
SUN Microsystems Case Analysis
Sun Microsystems had an extremely tough decision to make in regards to its procurement strategy.
They had to decide if they were going to take on an E sourcing or dynamic bidding auction type
strategy with making purchases from their suppliers. Taking on this type of procurement strategy
would benefit Sun with cost savings on procurements, but may jeopardize their supplier
relationships and quality of inputs for Sun products.
After reviewing the enclosed financial data for Sun from 1996 1999, it is apparent that some
trends are consistent. Sun s cost of goods sold has consistently been around half of their revenue
for prior fiscal years, resulting in an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would allow Sun to choose their supplier by cost and match that with their internal aggregated
demand figures. This would raise competition between suppliers and allow Sun to reduce their
procurement costs. Sun would have to take many factors into consideration when bidding on
suppliers such that quality and integrity are not affected, thus tampering with their relationships
with their suppliers.
Advantages: A dynamic bidding system has the potential to reduce costs through price flexibility; it
is fast and conveniently transacted through the Internet, and allows for expanded competition
among suppliers.
Disadvantages: With so much focus on lower prices, initial quality would be affected, current
supplier relationships would deteriorate, collusion of suppliers could result, and the possibility of
an Internet security threat could arise.
Sun prides itself on strategic supplier relationships. Making this type of change in procurement
strategy may affect these relationships. Sun management has to decide if it wants to continue its
ethical business through strong supplier relationships, or follow the greed trail of money hungry
corporations. I would involve top management from all of my major suppliers in making such a
decision and let them see my side of the business. I have to cut costs, so we can work together to
reduce cost of goods sold, or we

Analysis Of Luria And Rubin ( 1974 )
Introduction
Subject investigated: Gender stereotypes
Details and aim of replicated study: Luria and Rubin (1974)
Background literature: Previous studies about gender stereotypes enforced on people include;
Effect of infant s perceived gender on adolescents ratings of the infant by Degelman, Dvorak, and
Homutoff and Cowan (1983). These studies highlight feminine and masculine traits. They ask
middle school students to rate a baby on each of those traits.
Rationale: Our group decided to examine the differences in how boys and girls are described. We
used a baby, whose gender is not mentioned, as the control. We knew that specific sets of
expectations based on gender are enforced at a young age. We thought adjectives used to describe a
baby could highlight stereotypical gender roles.
Aim / Hypothesis: We believe it is more likely for the baby to be described based on appearance
when told it is a girl and when told it is a boy to be described based on their potential and whether
they looked smart . Our aim is to highlight the differences between males and females using
stereotypical gender roles.
Method
Design: 15 students were each asked the same question, could you tell us 5 words or phrases that
describe this baby? . 5 were told it was a girl, 5 were told it was a boy, and 5 weren t told a gender.
We decided to use 15 people so that we could use the non gendered descriptions from 5 of the
participants and compare them to the descriptions of boys and

The Effects Of Media Fast Exercise On Children
In the United States, the media is commonplace. Some countries, such as Japan offer therapy for
people, usually teenagers, who spend too much time playing video games or accessing the
internet. This is due to the fact that technology is basically needed to live a normal life. For
example, employers ask for a phone number and email address in job applications. If an applicant
doesn t have a phone number or an email address, the employer would think the person applying
for a job is a little weird. On the other hand, some people enjoy living off the grid , which means
they do not use infrastructure such as electricity. An example of these people includes the Amish.
On October 10th, I successfully completed the arduous task of not using any media for eight hours.
Before I started the media fast exercise, I thought this was the most horrible thing that could happen
to me. The entire summer, I was on my computer and phone communicating with my friends and
watching videos. Being a college student who has a lot of reading homework, I was angry that
we could not read because I wanted to read the books for my classes so I would be able to do
some of my homework. As I said before, accessing the media is very typical of teenagers and
college students. My generation has lived with technology our entire lives. Growing up with
technology accessible to us made this exercise so much harder. I later thought about how I worked
at a summer camp in the mountains for three summers. At the

Marx Vs Saussure
Throughout history, we are continuously fighting to interpret our reality and the things which
comprise one and other. This is not a simple task for one to take on, but multiple historical thinkers
have taken it upon themselves to question the components of interpretation and find the meaning
that it is grounded upon. Specifically, Ferdinand de Saussureand Karl Marx propose fundamental
critics that are embedded within modern day thinking shaping our ideals and the functionality we
see within language and reality. Saussure and Marx take two different approaches to understanding
history, language and culture, they provide this through both scientific and critical methods for
interpreting reality and the things which it is trying to represent.... Show more content on

The relationship that the signifier and signified elements share though is arbitrary, which is a key
property. Due to the fact that these two share an arbitrary bond, it puts in question the reliability of
their interpretation of things, such as the words and the nature which stands behind them. The
arbitrary attributes both the signifier and signified share show that there is a type of break that
occurs between the sound image and the idea itself this pushes Saussure to state that language
itself is unmotivated; what is trying to be represented is not a natural occurrence. Saussure directs
the audience into realizing that even though one believes that there is a natural link between the
meaning of a thing, like a dog, and what is trying to be represented, the actual dog, this is a
forced thing which we have to learn and not a natural occurrence. In order to provide clarity of
language and distinguish this ___ from other ___ Saussure comprises a summarization of four
characteristics within language. First and foremost, language is a well defined object in the
heterogeneous mass of speech facts. This means ______. Next, Language, unlike speaking, is
something that we can study separately. Thirdly, Whereas speech is heterogeneous, language as
defined, is homogenous. The last component of language discusses is Language is concrete no less
so than speaking; and this is a help in our study of

Characteristic Characters In Edgar Allan Poe s The...
Dupin as a character, is a fantastic precursor archetype for the development of other fictional
detective characters, and their fascinating stories. Edgar Allan Poe, has developed a character with
unique structure, and quirks beyond even his own era, as there are several examples of how this
character has set the stage for unique detective characters of the modern day. The most popular
accounts being Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and even Batman. Yes, even Batman! However,
I had wondered what makes these characters so appealing, and I believe the answer lies in the
motif, specifically a character motif, but what is the one presented? Elementary dear Watson:
The motif is eccentric, or odd character traits, blended with quick wit, and amassing knowledge
i.e.: Dupin being commented as odd for liking to lurk in the dark, yet understanding advanced
philosophies, Holmes obsession with keeping documents and alarmingly high I.Q., or Batman s
fear/fascination with bats yet knowing several languages and being able to find a criminal s
M.O. before anyone even realizes there is a crime committed. All these quirky traits fascinate us
from the outside looking in, we become the sidekick, hanging on to every word as if we blinked we
d miss a life lesson.
Whilst reading The Purloined Letter I found myself fascinated by the character of C. Auguste Dupin
. More than likely, it s because I have always liked the detective character type, even as a child I
found myself fascinated by the

Write a full account on the struggle for racial equality in post war America.
During World War II, around one million black men served in the army. They were in different
units to the white men. Riots and fights occurred when black men from northern America had to
face the discrimination in the south during training. This lessoned peoples opinion of them, in a
prejudice way. They were never allowed to join the Marines or the Air Corps, but this changed for
the first time during the war due to the military needs. After the war, blacks began to challenge
their status as second class citizens. After their country fighting Nazi Germany, who killed six

A similar incident happened when a young man tried to enrol for the University of Mississippi,
an all white university. An angry mob and the governor of Mississippi tried to stop him. The case
was brought to court by the NAACP and won the right for him to enrol. President Kennedy also
sent troops in to protect the young man when he was enrolling but riots broke out ending in 375
people injured and two dead. The rest of the state universities in the south were slowly desegregated.
In the north, blacks and whites attended different schools because they lived in different parts of
the city or state. The laws to desegregate the schools were not just for the south. So they brought
in bussing. This meant that black children could get the bus to white schools that had been
desegregated so there was a racial balance in the schools. A lot of northern cities resisted this court
order, and some cities even fire bombed the buses. To get around these laws, many white people
sent their children to private schools. Most black children stayed in public schools due to lack of
money.
There wasn t just racial segregation in schools. Restaurants and buses are just a couple of the
other places where racial segregation occurred. Racial segregation on public transport was
enforced by the Jim Crow laws. This meant that blacks had to sit at the back of the bus, whites at
the front. A black person had to give up his seat if

Why Hector And Achilles Are Homeric Heroes
It is known that both Hector and Achilles are both Homeric Heroes in their own right. Both men are
fighting for various paralleled reasons. However, both men have very different motivations fueling
them and these motivations cause them to make rash decisions in extenuating conditions. Each man
is motivated simultaneously by family, honor, and pride.
Achilles and Hector both clearly value family. For Achilles his family is the men who fight
beside him. When one of them is killed in battle he makes the passionate verdict to retaliate with
vengeance. His need to destroy his enemies is what eventually seals his fate. To say the least
family is of high priority to Achilles. Hector on the other hand, is not overly concerned with
family in the heat of the war. Yes, he does express concern for their well being should anything
happen to him, nevertheless he gives no sympathy to those who love him. For Hector there are
more important matters to attend to outside the walls of Troy and that is all that matters him. The
war is Hector s first priority. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These men fight for honor, not just privately but publicly as well. This meaning that they are
looking for some inward sense of honor and outward honor from the men they are in arms with. In
Greek terms, both men are looking for their kleos or immortal recognition. Achilles knows of his
predestination which he comes to terms with after the death of Patroclus, and his destruction of
Hector. Achilles identifies with his kleos and pursues it wholeheartedly. Hector desires some form
of kleos, but he truly never claims it. This yearning to have this spiritual immortality is what fuels
him to continue his rampage on the Greeks. Even though this motive is short lived it lead to very
hotheaded decisions meant to earn him honor and glory on the battle

Should Spaceflight Ever Be Commercialized In The Private...
Commercializing Spaceflight
Spaceflight has always been dominated by the public sector, which is controlled by the
government. Working for a government owned aerospace company and seeing the amount of
capital required to send an object into space, I have always wondered if spaceflight could ever be
commercialized in the private sector. The cost associated with spaceflighthas always been so
expensive and provided little monetary return on investment, that only the government could afford
to fund the research development, building, launching, and monitoring. This was primarily done
through NASA (National Aeronautics Space Administration), as they were one of the few who had
the capability to achieve spaceflight. In recent years an emerging ... Show more content on

Critical Analysis Of The Man He Killed
In this poem, The Man He Killed , the poet Thomas Hardy explores a complex theme, which is
war, using the simplest language. Throughout this essay I will be discussing the thoughts and
opinions Hardy has on war.
The Man He Killed was written in the nineteenth century during the Boer War that took place in
South Africa in 1898. This war was because the British Empire wanted to take control over the
land because of its rich gold and diamonds. The poem is written in a conversational tone, with
speech marks, making us feel that the soldier is talking directly to us reminiscing about killing a
foe whilst at war. The speaker in this poem is a man of low class who was unemployed and had
already sold all his possessions and consequently had no choice but to join the army; this can be
seen when the man states just as I was out of work had sold his traps . Hardy is showing us that
some people join the army just out of desperation not because they believe in the political side of
war. These unemployed, low classed people have no other way of earning the money to help them
survive so they turn to the only other option the have joining the army. The speaker is forced to kill
another man which he claims was his foe and later on realises that he and the man had a lot in
common.
During this poem the man is forced to kill another man and the repetition of because implies
hesitation and uncertainty about why he shot the man. He tries to reassure himself by saying just
so: my

People that do not live on the Westside of El Paso may have a hard time navigating to this
restaurant due to low visibility of the sign and small enclosure of the parking lot. There are no
other signs visible on, or near the street prior to arriving to Bella Napoli that will prompt
someone to slow down, stop and make the turn into the parking lot. The parking lot itself is both
paved and gravel. It has a slight downward slope in the direction of the restaurant that could

Assembly Line Olympics of History
Assembly Line Olympics of History Assembly lines are a big part of manufacturing in almost
every country in the world. Some work better than others, so an analytical breakdown would be
required to be able to tell which factories and countries are more effective than others, and what
they do to get that way. The function of organized work and division of labor has been around
since ancient times. On the timeline of organized work, the closer one gets to modern day, the
more organized labor becomes, and the more labor gets divided. It started with the three basic
job groups, food, child care, and shelter (Kranzberg, 1). Then, in places such as Greece, Rome,
Egypt, and Mesopotamia, labor was divided up by social classes. The rulers and nobility were
the ones overseeing the work and directing the economy, (Hannan, 2), while the priests held
knowledge of writing, reading, math, and the more scholarly subjects. Next down the line were
clerks and scribes, (Kranzberg, 2), and then merchants and traders underneath them who bought
and sold goods. Then there were peasants, slaves, and lastly prisoners of war who were forced to
work. We can see some similarities of this ancient hierarchy in modern day. The social/working
pecking order of ancient times hasn t faded. We have the government officials, the politicians, the
doctors lawyers, the modern merchants and salesmen, the working class, and even convicts who
work to earn credit or are even forced to work.

Representation Of The Hollywood Television Industry
Representation Matters: Diversity in the Hollywood Television Industry A recent study done by the
UCLA Bunche Center for African American Studies showed the lack of diversity within
Hollywood by examining all the films released, television programs on broadcast, cable, or digital
networks, as well as the actors, writers, directors, and producers within the industry. Ethnic
minorities make up about 40% of the American population but still remain underrepresented in all
forms of entertainment. The study also discovered that more than 50% of moviegoers in the past
two years were minorities. In television, minorities only claimed about 7% of lead roles in
broadcast television ( NEW! 2015 Hollywood Diversity Report ). With half the American
population consisting of different ethnicities, American television should accurately and
proportionately portray the American people, yet some are having trouble doing so. Some
television networks have catered to their diverse audience by casting actors of different ethnicities
as the lead of a show, or by centering an entire show around a unique culture. Most have found this
to be beneficial with an increase in ratings and in profits through their sponsors. The organizations,
the Florida Family Association (FFA) and the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)
represent two different positions on diversity within Hollywood and how the American people
should be portrayed in the television industry. The FFA is a national organization

but also check the press, publication year, ISBN, conference name, keywords, etc. So people save
a lot of time to read the card.
In the rapid development of today s information superhighway, each library is connected to Internet.
People can experience high speed information now from the world s information highway
libraries, some libraries on the network also offers free text information, readers can see all kinds
of plain text or hypertext information on the computer. Thus, the scope of the library collection
expanded, extended to the every corner of the world industry, and has become a library without
walls or virtual library.
Free library books borrowing are the most important function. However, compared to previous
readers, today s readers clearly expect that libraries must offer more than just books. Massive
library system reform means use of high tech; however, if lacking of overall strategy and clear
goals, just meaningless technology

Susan Cain Introverts
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can t Stop Talking In Quiet, Susan Cain (2013)
argues that we undervalue introverts, and therefore she attempts to show us how much we lose by
doing so. She describes the rise of the extrovert culture in the 21st century and explains how deeply
it has influenced our culture. Additionally, she introduces an example of successful introverts from
a high figure who recharges in loneliness after his talks then to a record breaking sales associate
who taps into the questioning power. Passionately argued and well researched, Quiet attempts to
permanently change our perspectives towards introverts, and most importantly, make introverts
change how they see themselves. In this task, I am going to summarize... Show more content on

An example is seeking compensation from a lottery jackpot and enjoying and evening with
close friends. Rewards motivate individuals to apply for sex and money, social status and,
influence. However, sometimes people are too sensitive to rewards, which is an overdrive that
gets people into all forms of trouble. Extroverted clients are more likely to be reward sensitive
while introverts are likely to pay more attention to warning signals. They are more successful in
regulating their behavior, and usually, they protect themselves from the downside. Extroverts are
characterized by their tendency to seek reward from top status to sexual rewards and cold cash.
Most importantly to introverts, they socialize because human connection is gratifying. Extroverts
rush for energized and anxious feelings. Cain describes dopamine as the reward chemical released
in response to anticipated pleasures. The Dopamine of extroverts appears to be more active than
those of introverts. Also, Cain argues that introverts are better than extroverts in delaying
gratification. Reward sensitive extroverts focus on achieving their goals and don t want any
challenge to get in their way. They speed up to meet their goals on time and to eliminate challenges
along their way. In contrast, introverts are programmed to downplay reward and scan for problems.
They tend to compare new information with

Compassion In Thank You, MaAm By Langston Hughes
Compassionate people are geniuses in the art of living, more necessary to the dignity, security, and
joy of humanity than the discoveries of knowledge. Albert Einstein
Everyone has difficulties and tragedies in life, some more than others. Though when people show
compassion, it makes your spirits rise and make your challenges more bearable. In the short story,
Thank you, Ma am by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, a woman whose
purse has been an attempted target by a boy, shows the theme of compassion with an
overflowing amount of it. The boy, Roger, learns throughout the story that compassion is very
important, and his true personality is revealed by some woman he doesn t even know. At the
beginning of Thank you, Ma am, we see how just how compassionate Mrs. Jones really is. The
moment she meets Roger, she tells the boy to wash his face. Least I can do is wash your face.
Are you hungry? This might not seem like a very compassionate thing to do at first, however,
she doesn t even know the boy, yet she has enough compassion to make sure he is clean. Then,
she takes the boy inside of her house! In addition, the boy, Roger asks, You going to take me to
jail? But Mrs. Jones doesn t. Maybe she sees that Roger is really a good boy inside, so she shows
compassion to bring out his true kindness. This makes me think that he was probably trying to
steal because he had to. And when Mrs. Jones asked him if he had anyone at home, he said, No m.

Synthesis Essay Museum
Museums collect information to show to the public for educational advancement and personal
enjoyment. Museum curators have a very imperative job, when it comes to the success of a
museum. Museum curators take the time and dedication to find artifacts that not only fit the theme
of the museum but they also have to consider price, authenticity, and origin. The artifacts chosen
mush hold a Wow factor registering remembrance and relevance into the minds of its visitors. The
artifacts should be chosen based upon significance not the monetary value.
The goal of any business is to make a profit, museums are no different. Capture hearts, attention, and
pocketbooks. The museum curators must choose artifacts and things to feature in exhibits that will
allure and attract guests and bring profit to the museum. The two problems facing museums success
is money and management (source A, Rockefeller). The excerpt from an autobiography written by a
fellow Rockefeller highlights the fiscal burden the management of a museum inflicts upon the

40). To be effective in his/her position as a consultant these to strategies must be in alignment and
work cohesively together. HRM consultants can do this in three ways: 1) Gather information about
their client, 2) Analyze that information and make necessary decisions, and 3) Implement the
decisions that they have made (Stewart amp; Brown, 2012, p. 41). As the HR consultant following
these steps while looking at the current business strategy and accessing how to incorporate the two
so I could effectively manage my client s needs as it relates to them personally.
Emphasize the importance of establishing HRM strategies to improve a competitive advantage
It is important that HRM consultants create a strong and sound strategy to keep and gain the
competitive advantage. By successfully implementing good HRM strategies, companies can
provide excellent talent and improve by staying current on the latest technologies and other
information talent (Welcome to HR Consultants, Inc., 2009). This will allow clients to increase
productivity within the organization; which in turn will increase profits. The greatest organizations

The Wrongful Convictions Of Innocent Men And Women
We hear in the news about police misconduct, use of excessive force, embezzlement, but one thing I
found while researching what I should write this paper on is the Wrongful convictions of innocent
men and women, that spend years in prison being innocent, and there is nothing that gets done till it
s too late. Some wrongful convictions are honest mistakes, but many times law enforcement and
prosecutors lose sight of the obligation of ensuring truth and justice, and are focused on their
convictionrates. As with any job, they are honest people and ones that just don t care and are
corrupt, this exists in the criminal justice system. One way to prove someone is innocent now is
through DNA testing, but even at all levels of a criminal investigation there could be misconduct or
mishandling of evidence, which then causes the evidence to become compromised.
One thing I notice is a lot of the misconduct is by the arresting officers or detectives that are
investigating the crime. The ways an office can have misconduct that could lead to false convictions,
include suggestions when conducting interviews, coercing false confessions, lying to jurors about
observations, failing to turn over evidence. Common forms of misconduct by a prosecutor can
include, withhold evidence from defense, mishandling, mistreating or destroying evidence,
allowing witnesses that they know are not truthful to testify, Pressing Witnesses of the defense to
not testify, relying on fraudulent forensic experts.

his buddies must face. That is why they are willing to do whatever to survive.
White Fang is put through many owners before finally finding the one he loves. He first starts off
with Gray Beaver, who owns he and his mother. He is very subtle and not cruel nor very nice.

hideous. Beauty Smith tricked Gray Beaver into trading whiskey for White Fang. He is a very
cruel man and tries to transfer White Fang into a fighting wolf. Throughout the story White Fang is
faced with many battles, emotionally and physically, and must stride to survive.
There are many different antagonists through White Fang. Beauty Smith is a very ugly and cruel
man who tricked White Fang s previous owner into trading for whiskey. He tries over and over to
turn White Fang into a fighting dog and has him fight dogs for money. Cherokee is a bulldog who
almost kills White Fang. He is the only dog to ever get close to finish White Fang in a battle.
Another antagonist is Jim Hall. Jim Hall is a criminal who is sent to jail unjustly by Judge Scott.

Fate And Free Will In Oedipus The King
Do you really have a choice? Many people believe that there is no such thing as fate. That a
person can decide their own fate and nothing is set in stone. Although, people today don t think
the same as the people from the ancient societies. Back then, a person s fate was handed down
from the gods to oracles and was decided before the child was born. People had no choice back
then, what the gods say aren t taken lightly. But yet, people still attempted to trick fate and escape
their destined paths. And in one of the many ancient greeks stories, Oedipus Rex, a major theme
was do not try to outsmart fate . Throughout the story, many people attempted to escape or outsmart
fate, but instead fate outsmarted them, leading them down their already chosen paths. Nevertheless,
the main characters in Oedipus Rex, the kings and queen, who thought themselves worthy enough
to test fate, seemed to be the ones to lose to fate in the end. It s important to realize, that the first
ones to test fate were King Laios and Queen Jocasta. In Scene II, Jocasta tells Oedipus that she...

The Policy Behind the Welfare Reform Act
The Welfare Reform Act of 1996 was enacted in order to change the current welfare policy at the
time. This welfare policy that existed was originally meant to provide financial assistance as
well as decent healthcare coverage during times of economic hardship (Kaestner, 2004). This
policy was implemented as a way to help hundreds of thousands of families overcome financial
hurdles. However, the idea behind the reforming of welfare was to avoid the stereotypical
individuals that lived off of welfare to continue doing so. Evidence existed that concluded that
people who lived off of government welfare assistance were actually allowing this system to
destroy their desire to work and sustain themselves (Rector Marshall, 2013). Welfare was seen
as a detrimental part of the government and it was viewed as feeding into a lazy and poorly
disciplined class of individuals. Welfare s initial intention was to aid widows who had children
to support, but in a matter of decades the entire welfare system converted from being a safety net
for individuals in dire times of need, to a support system for able bodied men who lacked
motivation to find employment and sustain themselves and their families (Rector Marshall, 2013).
The Welfare Reform Act came as a way to remedy these problems. Stipulations were put on those
applying to receive welfare benefits. Limits were enacted that would reduce the amount of time that
people could receive the benefits in order to speed up their

Lady Macbeth Changes
In William Shakespeare s play, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth goes through some major character

the throne and she is so eager for the king s death that she makes Macbeth do it. After the death of
Duncan, Lady Macbethdoes not appear in many other significant ways, this is where her change
begins to show. Lady Macbeth is first introduced into the play as a dark and evil character, she is

she is confessing one of the crimes that her family has committed; she is also having a
conversation with herself asking if her hands will ever be clean of the evil she has done. She
says that they will never be clean again. Also, she is rubbing her hands together as if she is
washing away her sins, thus proving her guilt. Later in the Act, Macbeth asks a doctor to check
on his wife and report on her condition. He says, Not so sick, my lord, / As she is troubled with
thick coming fancies / that keep her from her rest... / ...Therein the patient / Must minister to

actually healthy. Lady Macbeth is just troubled with disturbing visions that will not go away.
Macbeth then asks the doctor what the cure is. He responds by saying that there is no cure; the
only way for her to get better is for her to overcome the visions. Since Lady Macbeth envisions the
murders they have committed and cannot overcome them, it proves that she is guilty. Ultimately, in

Anaerobic Respiration Lab Report
1. Describe the differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration and fermentation.
Aerobic respiration requires for oxygen to be present in order to create energy, which it can be
done by the chemical of ATP. As for anaerobic respiration it s quite opposite It doesn t need
oxygen to create energy. The alternative they produce energy is by use of nitrogen, or sulfur.
Fermentation comes into action when respiration is low. This process will only include mostly just
carbohydrates with just low levels of oxygen.
2. Write out the optimal temperature, oxygen, and pH requirements for a microaerophilic,
neutrophilic, mesophilic such as Streptococcus. It doesn t need too much oxygen in order to create
energy. Therefore its microaerophilic because it doesn t require too much oxygen, so it contains
high levels of carbon dioxide (aerotolerant anaerobe). This microbe survives in human temperature

Cataract Research Paper
Cataract is one of the visual problems that we are discussing in this project. They are developing
on a particular tissue from the eye called lens. The lens is located behind the iris and the pupil,
this tissue is fundamental in order to complete the visual process. The lens is a clear part of the eye
that helps to focus light or images on the retina, working like a camera lens. Cataracts produce a
clouding on the lens affecting the vision of the person. Most of them are commonly cause by
aging, however they can be develop on young people as well, but how are cataracts develop?
The lens is made of water and proteins; those proteins are organizing in a precise way that keeps
the lens clear letting lights pass perfectly through the retina. When people age some of those
proteins can move and clump together clouding a part of the lens making it harder for the person to
see with the affected eye. Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40
years and is the leading cause of blindness in the world. In fact, there are more cases of cataracts

Simulation enables researchers to construct models to understand and evaluate current systems and
alternatives for applying new processes or improving current processes in various areas (Greasley,
2004; Ingalls, 2008; Iqbal et al., 2012). The simulation method has been adopted in various
industries such as airline, port operation, banking, service, food and transportation (Robinson, 2004;
Kotachi et al., 2013). Although simulationraises quality concerns and does not provide absolute
answers, simulation is flexible to design simple and complex processes (Chung, 2003; Kotachi et

such as agent approach, regression approach and discrete event simulation approach. Apparwal

The Justice + Incest Combo Deal
The Justice+Incest Combo Deal (Limited Time Discount)
The concept of justice is one of many in the society the world has grown to be. Justice, by
definition, is the just behavior or treatment. A concern for justice, peace, and genuine respect for
people, one might say. It is something that has been passed down generation to generation around
the world, a moral concept that holds together the lawful side of humanity from falling back to the
savage ways of the Earth. Oh goodness gracious, no, we wouldn t want that. It imprints into our
mind that justice is something like a transcendent will that deals punishment to the wrong and
prevails with the good. We as the United States have gone and put so much belief into the concept
of Justice that we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As things progress, he is very determined to find the killer for the very sake of justice, but of
course, this being an old play of the past, there is always some drama that screws over the main
character into darkness. When he tries to consult an oracle to see where the killer laid hidden, they
have a heated discussion that leads to the oracle to promptly say that Oedipus himself was the
killer. That wasn t all. The oracle said that Oedipus was the killer of the king and that he would
fornicate his own mother and commit the act of incest. Oedipus, now with this in mind, was
more determined to seek to have justice dealt to the true murderer and clear his name. Keep in
mind, his justice , personally, for him means clearing his name to keep his image as a being that
is close or similar to a god. He was the one who solved the riddle of sphinx and saved the city
from its terrorizing ways. He wants to appear pure in front of his people and not seem like a
false figure. His understanding of justice came from his power, making his actions just in the
eyes of all. His murder of his true father was not labelled a crime back then due to no knowledge
of the man on the road with Oedipus being his father. By ancient Greek law, Oedipus was the
stronger one of the two, so he had every right to use the road over the other, thus no need for
criminal justice. It was until Oedipus heard his prophecy that justice was truly needed to assure him
he wasn t the murderer and deliver punishment to the true killer. Thus, his search for justice truly
began at that point where he scattered all over the city to find clues concerning the former king s

Key Differences Between Feudalism And Capitalism
Q3. Drawing on Heilbroner, explain the key differences between feudalism and capitalism. Explain
how Heilbroner discusses the rise and establishment of capitalism?
In this short essay, I will explain few key differences between feudalism and capitalism based on
Heilbroner s book. They are as follows: the property rights (Land), the system of wage and labor
(Workers), and the existence of competition. Additionally, I will discuss the rise of capitalismbased
on Heilbroner point of view.
Both feudalism and capitalism are defined by many scholars in various ways. In both of these
models, the high class takes advantage of the lower class. Feudalism is an obligational
socioeconomic hierarchical system that structuring the relationship ... Show more content on

There was no property law and decisions likely favored the king and the rich and were thus unfair.
As for capitalism, the land is considered a commodity that can be bought and sold. The legal
framework includes universal enforcement of property rights. Property right not only exists,
workers get standardized legal protection for their property. Landlords own the land and tenants
must pay rent.
Second:Workers
In feudalism, the system of wage labor didn t exist. The serf lives off the land and is forced to
work in return, they get food and protection. They don t have a work contract or wages. They do
not have the option to leave, and they work even if the conditions are unbearable. When the land
is transferred to another lord, the serf will have a new lord to obey. Unlike feudalism, in
capitalism work is a contract based between employer and worker, so does have a system of
wage labor. Workers had freedom whether to terminate their contract or not. If the worker does
not like their current job, the worker had some flexibility to decide what to do next, stay or leave.
As Adam Smith states If profits or wages are too low in one trade area, there will be an evacuation
of capital and labor until the supply is better adjusted to the demand (Heilbroner, 1999)
In regard to buying and selling of labor power. In feudalism, buying and selling labor power wasn
t an option. A serf was born into the land and couldn t leave the manor and sell their

Forward Facing Car Seat Safety
The most exciting part of raising a child is watching them reach different milestones of their life.
From sitting up, to talking and walking, to their first birthday most parents are ecstatic and
dismal. No parent would ever put their child in any danger or to purposely hurt them. But by
simply keep kids in a rear facing position can be 500% times safer. In 100 car accidents, 8 children
will die or have serious injuries in a rear facing car seatcompared to the 40 children that will die or
have serious injuries in forward facing car seats. Putting a childin a forward facing car seat, before
their second birthday, that creates uninformed decisions that can cause incomplete growth, serious
injuries, and death. First, the biggest problem is the myths that go along with car seats and car
seat safety. CNN reports that 24% of parents will turn their children around before they reach two.
One reason is the huge myth that a child has outgrown the position of a rear facing position. Most
car seats have adjustable positions as the child grows, as well as, have weight and height limits
printed in the car seat manual.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Disadvantages Of Ant Colony Optimization
Abstract In this paper an efficient hybrid optimization approach is used to solve the optimal power
flow problem. In the proposed approach particle swarm optimization along with ant colony
optimization is used for setting of control variables for optimal power flow problem. The proposed
approach is tested and examined in standard IEEE 30 bus test system. The various objective
functions involved are fuel cost minimization, voltage profile improvement and transmission loss
reduction. This proposed approach overcomes the disadvantages of ant colony optimizationsuch as
premature convergence and stagnating output. Keywords voltage stability; fuel cost; loss; optimal
power flow; optimization;PSO;ACO.

ANT COLONY OPTIMIZATION Ant colony optimization (ACO) is an evolutionary and adaptive
algorithm that was introduced by Marco Dorigo in 1992.This ant colony optimization algorithm is
inspired by behavior of real ant colonies. The ant when searching food move in random
direction.Once the ant finds the food source,it evaluates the quantity and quality of food.It takes
certain amount of food to the nest.During this process, the ant deposits a chemical called
pheromone as a trail on the ground during the return path. The quantity of pheromone deposited is
based on the quantity and quality of the food available.HEnce this would guide other ants towards
the food providing an indirect communication. The pheromone trails allows the ants to identify the
shortest path between the ant nest and the food source. This above technique is used for optimization

Analysis Of Barbara Kingsolver s Flight Behavior
Climate change, also known as global warming, is one of the biggest environmental challenges
affecting the planet the world is getting warmer, and humans activity is primarily to blame.
Climate change is the leitmotif of Barbara Kingsolver s novel Flight Behavior. Set in Appalachia,
rural Tennessee, Flight Behavior tells the story of Dellarobia Turnbow a 28 year old unhappy
housewife, stuck in a marriage brought on by a teenage pregnancy. Dellarobia was on her way to
commit adultery when she stumbled on what she believed was an act of god a colony of monarch
butterflies whose migration flight was disrupted. Kingsolver uses monarch butterflies as a device to
illustrate the consequences of climate change. In the novel, Flight Behavior,... Show more content

Dellarobia has all these questions, yet the answers are always insufficient: too young, too late,
why now, why here. The word choice in this passage shows how distraught and confused
Dellarobia is about the phenomenon s occurring in her life. Diction such as Why the butterflies,
why now. Why here? This repetition creates a real emphasis, and adds to the mood of this passage
of exasperation and uncertainty. The author s tone is shared with Dellarobia. The tone is irritated
and disgruntled. The author uses diction and language to convey this tone. The sentence length has
an immense effect on the reader. This passage contains for the most part long sentences with the
exception of the last few sentences. The long sentences are used here to investigate the core
nature of Dellarobia more thoroughly; the short sentences, however, are used to pack more punch
and emphasis compared to the previous, more lengthy sentences. To amplify her writing,
Kingsolver uses a simile in this passage. She compares the word why with one silver dollar on the
floor of a wishing well, begging to be plucked up but strategically untouchable. In sublime language,
Kingsolver is saying that everybody wants to know the answer to the question why? but that that
like a coin in a wishing well, the answer is simply unattainable no matter how much one may want

Southwest Calder Valley North Of Lochwinnoch
1. Introduction
Since1970, Muirshiel Country Park has been part of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park which is
situated in the River Calder Valley north of Lochwinnoch. The park is an area of general natural
beauty with beautiful landscapes and great scenic views but people are allowed to live and work
within the area. It may look remote but it has a purpose for human activity, as in the past the land
has been used as a farm situated close to the current entrance, for field sports such as grouse
shooting and more recently for barytes mining. The mine closed in 1969, just before the opening
of the country park. (Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority [CMPA from now on], n.d.) The current use
of the park is mainly recreational, with a small network of footpaths for walkers, cyclists, and
educational groups. Other land uses include forestry, field sports, and small scale agriculture. For
this assignment we are imagining that a gold bearing ore outcrops on Windy Hill just to the north
of the country park.
The vein extends below the hill summit to an unknown depth and can be traced horizontally
across the landscape for at least a kilometre on either side of Windy Hill. The scope of this
assignment is to identify and evaluate the environmental impacts of building a gold mining site in
this area and how this might affect the local geology, landscape, ecology, hydrology, and overall
biodiversity.

The fragrance business is based in a vertical integration inside of Chanel SA and treating this
division as a separated business, which has been estimated to turn over more than 1 billion dollars
per year, leaded by Chanel NВє5.
The fact is that Chanel has used the NВє5 as a symbol of the brand and they based their penetration
strategies in new markets such as China promoting the perfume with the strongest storytelling and
becoming the leader in the Chinese market with a 13% of market share in 2014. (Euromonitor,
2015)
Moreover, with the recent decision of reducing the gap between European prices and Chinese ones,
consumers are even more keen of the brand if possible. This strategy enables Chanel to reaffirm ...

Chanel entered China following the success of Louis Vuitton in late 90 s with a strong marketing
strategy based on limited retail points for their higher categories such as fashion, accessories and
jewelry and with a vast retail network for beauty products that gave the brand a strong brand
awareness and started to build a young loyal database.
The brand has always understood the need of Chinese consumers to fully understand brand s
heritage. In this case events have been the best tool to communicate and control the message such
as Chanel Culture or the Little Black Jacket, all of them not only centered in the products but in
Coco Chanel, creating a symbol.

Over all, there are many types of abuse, from physical abuse to rough living conditions, that elderly

Statistics
Anyone can abuse a nursing home resident from their nurses to their own family members.
There has only one been national study to try to explain who abuses residents more, according
to the NCEA(2011), and at approximately 90% of them were abused by family members. Just as
well abuse can occur anywhere from their own houses to nursing homes. According to a study
from 2000, 2,000 residents were polled and 44% of them stated they had been abused. Other
research from the NCEA states that persons with dementia are at a much higher risk for abuse. A
study that had been conducted in 2010 revealed that 47% of elderly with dementia had been
abused. Abuse definitely takes an impact on these people. Statistics, again from NCEA, have
shown that elders who have been abused have a 300% higher risk of death over those not abused.
They also have many more psychological and medical problems than a non abused person.
Cases of Abuse There are have been many cases of nursing home and elder abuse nation wide

Anne Frank Essay
Introduction:
Have you ever had a hard time in your life? The Holocaust was a very tough time for the Jews,
they were forced to either find a place to stay or they would get sent off to concentration camp,
which was leading to their last breath. Anne Frank and her family, had to stay in an annex to try
to stay away from the Nazi s because they were Jewish. They had to be really quiet during the day
or they would be heard from down below. However, there is one special girl that handled it very
well. Anne Frank once said, In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart.
Throughout all the obstacles that Anne and her family have faced, she is always looking for the
good in people. After reading the diary, I have come to a decision. Anne s quote really said a lot
about her and others around her. I am agreeing with Anne s powerful quote. The others that were in
hiding with Anne really had to persevere and help each other out. When I read the diary I saw that
the most caring person was Miep. She always helped them when they needed something outside of
the annex, but I can still see how people think that people during those days were not very good at
heart. I think Mr Van Daan seemed a little rude and selfish about others.
My Side:
After I saw many acts of kindness, throughout the play, based off of Anne s diary, I was
persuaded to agree with her quote that everyone is good at heart. The character that stood out the
most to me was Miep. She showed me at the beginning of the book when they all moved into the
annex. On page 8, the dialogue goes on to say,
Narrator: (indicating the sink cupboard)
Miep: We put the stores of food you sent in here.
Narrator:( She crosses to the shelves.)
Miep: Your drugs are here soap, linen, here.
Mrs. Frank: Thank you, Miep.
Miep: I made up the beds the way Mr Frank and Mr Kraler said. Forgive me. I have to hurry. I ve
got to go to the other side of town to get some ration books for you.
During this scene, the Franks and the Van Daans had just moved into hiding and were trying to
settled in quickly. They knew that they were lacking on the materials that they needed. Mr Frank
thought about his workers that weren t Jewish, then he said Miep. Miep was

untucked white dress shirt rolled up sleeves. Both witnessed that it was Deluna running away
from the Shamrock gas station. Now it was in the hands of the witnesses and police officers on
what information to rely on to catch the killer. Though the first witness Baker was face to face
with the attacker he said that the killer had a mustache. However the last two witnesses that
encountered the man jogging away from the gas station stated that the man had no beard or visible
hair on the face. They described his face as clean shaved.

suspected him and arrested him immediately. Police found him hiding a few blocks

  • 2. Looking Glass Wars Theme In The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor, the story of Alice in Wonderland is retold, but with a twist. Instead of Alice going to Wonderland because she wants to live in a different place, Alice (Alyss) lives in Wonderland, and the book was written about her life. Alyss experiences many obstacles in her journey to the real world. She ends up in England where she is then convinced that Wonderland isn t real and that it was all just her imagination. However, to her surprise, she ends up back in Wonderland and back in the same troubles in which she left behind. By changing the plot of the story, the themes of the original story have been tweaked. One of the major themes in this book is love and sacrifice. This theme is shown mainly through three... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alyss is the princess (soon to be queen) of Wonderland. Alyss loved her home in Wonderland very much, so when she entered the real world, she would get into fights because people made fun of her for believing it was real. Alyss got into fights and traded insults with her tormentors, often returning home scraped, bruised, and humiliated. (128). She is standing up for what she believes in (Wonderland) and if that means that she is going to be beat up, so be it. Alyss also sacrificed her life when she was fighting Redd to regain her place on the throne. She didn t fight for just herself, she fought for everyone in Wonderland that is being held under Redd s rules. I m stronger than you are, Redd (347). In conclusion, Alyss is a very brave princess and she has taken many sacrifices to ensure the safety of her queendom as her mother had done before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. College Should Be Unobtainable College is one of the most fundamental institutions in our modern world. It s a place where children go to further their education and where most of our future doctors, politicians, and scientists are made. Nelson Mandela once said, Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world. In the past several years, rates are increasing higher than inflation and becoming even more unobtainable for families. Collegeshould be more affordable for the following three reasons. First off, student debt should be less of an issue. Secondly, a more educated country would increase the country s economy and it would give us social benefits. After people graduate from college, if their degree warrants filling a necessary void in the workplace, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Gary Wockner s Argument For Using More Water Snow falls gracefully from the sky, landing atop the beautiful Rocky Mountains. When that snow melts into water, it collects into streams, which run into rivers, and low down into the plains and further into different states. That water that originally fell as snow will be collected and pumped into thousands of homes, businesses, and farmlands in order to supply thousands of people with safe drinking water. One thing people generally do not concern themselves with, is water usage, and so in the United States alone, approximately 3580,000 million gallons of water was used, with 70 percent of that coming from surface water (Price 1). With so much water usage, the demand has already outgrown supply, and new ways of providing that supply have been... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the reservoir would only be within five miles of Fort Collins, Petschek wonders what would happen when there would be too much water within the proposed Glade Reservoir and they would need to release the excess water. Petschek fears that releasing water back into the River, especially so close to the major city, would induce more flooding and destroy more property, especially considering there have already been two 100 year floods within 17 years. So, Petschek attempts to induce fear within the reader that putting a reservoir down cause more flooding, and abandoning the Glade Reservoir would be a better idea than putting hundreds of thousands of lives at ... • 5. The Role Of Heteronormativity In New Girl Heteronormativity is when heterosexuality believed to be the only natural norm in our society for sexual orientation. New Girl , an American sitcom, aired in 2011 on Fox, follows Jess (Zooey Deschanel) as she lives in a loft in Los Angeles with three men she meets on Craigslist. The second episode of the second season is what will be focused on in this essay. During which Jess meets a stranger when he accidentally mistakes her for his blind date, Nick (Jake Johnson) believes he has met his future self, and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) tries to make a good impression on Winston s (Lamorne Morris) mom and sister. The writers of New Girl follow basic genderroles within the story lines of the television show. The show follows a heteronormative plot. Through examining New Girl , a viewer can see the issues arise when considering the portrayal of men and women in media, and heteronormativity in television shows. Within television, there is often a sense of heteronormativity that is shown through heterosexual relationships and a lack of representation of LGBT+ community. While New Girl has four main characters, all who have active social/sexual lives, all are interested in the opposite sex. In fact, there is not even talk about any sexual orientation other than being attracted to the opposite sex. As Jess is juggling two men interested in her; Schmidt and Nick tell her that there comes a time in every person s life when for no reason whatsoever they are irresistible to the ... • 6. Essay about SUN Microsystems Case Analysis SUN Microsystems Case Analysis Sun Microsystems had an extremely tough decision to make in regards to its procurement strategy. They had to decide if they were going to take on an E sourcing or dynamic bidding auction type strategy with making purchases from their suppliers. Taking on this type of procurement strategy would benefit Sun with cost savings on procurements, but may jeopardize their supplier relationships and quality of inputs for Sun products. After reviewing the enclosed financial data for Sun from 1996 1999, it is apparent that some trends are consistent. Sun s cost of goods sold has consistently been around half of their revenue for prior fiscal years, resulting in an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It would allow Sun to choose their supplier by cost and match that with their internal aggregated demand figures. This would raise competition between suppliers and allow Sun to reduce their procurement costs. Sun would have to take many factors into consideration when bidding on suppliers such that quality and integrity are not affected, thus tampering with their relationships with their suppliers. Advantages: A dynamic bidding system has the potential to reduce costs through price flexibility; it is fast and conveniently transacted through the Internet, and allows for expanded competition among suppliers. Disadvantages: With so much focus on lower prices, initial quality would be affected, current supplier relationships would deteriorate, collusion of suppliers could result, and the possibility of an Internet security threat could arise. Sun prides itself on strategic supplier relationships. Making this type of change in procurement strategy may affect these relationships. Sun management has to decide if it wants to continue its ethical business through strong supplier relationships, or follow the greed trail of money hungry corporations. I would involve top management from all of my major suppliers in making such a decision and let them see my side of the business. I have to cut costs, so we can work together to reduce cost of goods sold, or we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Analysis Of Luria And Rubin ( 1974 ) Introduction Subject investigated: Gender stereotypes Details and aim of replicated study: Luria and Rubin (1974) Background literature: Previous studies about gender stereotypes enforced on people include; Effect of infant s perceived gender on adolescents ratings of the infant by Degelman, Dvorak, and Homutoff and Cowan (1983). These studies highlight feminine and masculine traits. They ask middle school students to rate a baby on each of those traits. Rationale: Our group decided to examine the differences in how boys and girls are described. We used a baby, whose gender is not mentioned, as the control. We knew that specific sets of expectations based on gender are enforced at a young age. We thought adjectives used to describe a baby could highlight stereotypical gender roles. Aim / Hypothesis: We believe it is more likely for the baby to be described based on appearance when told it is a girl and when told it is a boy to be described based on their potential and whether they looked smart . Our aim is to highlight the differences between males and females using stereotypical gender roles. Method Design: 15 students were each asked the same question, could you tell us 5 words or phrases that describe this baby? . 5 were told it was a girl, 5 were told it was a boy, and 5 weren t told a gender. We decided to use 15 people so that we could use the non gendered descriptions from 5 of the participants and compare them to the descriptions of boys and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Effects Of Media Fast Exercise On Children In the United States, the media is commonplace. Some countries, such as Japan offer therapy for people, usually teenagers, who spend too much time playing video games or accessing the internet. This is due to the fact that technology is basically needed to live a normal life. For example, employers ask for a phone number and email address in job applications. If an applicant doesn t have a phone number or an email address, the employer would think the person applying for a job is a little weird. On the other hand, some people enjoy living off the grid , which means they do not use infrastructure such as electricity. An example of these people includes the Amish. On October 10th, I successfully completed the arduous task of not using any media for eight hours. Before I started the media fast exercise, I thought this was the most horrible thing that could happen to me. The entire summer, I was on my computer and phone communicating with my friends and watching videos. Being a college student who has a lot of reading homework, I was angry that we could not read because I wanted to read the books for my classes so I would be able to do some of my homework. As I said before, accessing the media is very typical of teenagers and college students. My generation has lived with technology our entire lives. Growing up with technology accessible to us made this exercise so much harder. I later thought about how I worked at a summer camp in the mountains for three summers. At the ... • 9. Marx Vs Saussure Throughout history, we are continuously fighting to interpret our reality and the things which comprise one and other. This is not a simple task for one to take on, but multiple historical thinkers have taken it upon themselves to question the components of interpretation and find the meaning that it is grounded upon. Specifically, Ferdinand de Saussureand Karl Marx propose fundamental critics that are embedded within modern day thinking shaping our ideals and the functionality we see within language and reality. Saussure and Marx take two different approaches to understanding history, language and culture, they provide this through both scientific and critical methods for interpreting reality and the things which it is trying to represent.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The relationship that the signifier and signified elements share though is arbitrary, which is a key property. Due to the fact that these two share an arbitrary bond, it puts in question the reliability of their interpretation of things, such as the words and the nature which stands behind them. The arbitrary attributes both the signifier and signified share show that there is a type of break that occurs between the sound image and the idea itself this pushes Saussure to state that language itself is unmotivated; what is trying to be represented is not a natural occurrence. Saussure directs the audience into realizing that even though one believes that there is a natural link between the meaning of a thing, like a dog, and what is trying to be represented, the actual dog, this is a forced thing which we have to learn and not a natural occurrence. In order to provide clarity of language and distinguish this ___ from other ___ Saussure comprises a summarization of four characteristics within language. First and foremost, language is a well defined object in the heterogeneous mass of speech facts. This means ______. Next, Language, unlike speaking, is something that we can study separately. Thirdly, Whereas speech is heterogeneous, language as defined, is homogenous. • 10. Characteristic Characters In Edgar Allan Poe s The... Dupin as a character, is a fantastic precursor archetype for the development of other fictional detective characters, and their fascinating stories. Edgar Allan Poe, has developed a character with unique structure, and quirks beyond even his own era, as there are several examples of how this character has set the stage for unique detective characters of the modern day. The most popular accounts being Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and even Batman. Yes, even Batman! However, I had wondered what makes these characters so appealing, and I believe the answer lies in the motif, specifically a character motif, but what is the one presented? Elementary dear Watson: The motif is eccentric, or odd character traits, blended with quick wit, and amassing knowledge i.e.: Dupin being commented as odd for liking to lurk in the dark, yet understanding advanced philosophies, Holmes obsession with keeping documents and alarmingly high I.Q., or Batman s fear/fascination with bats yet knowing several languages and being able to find a criminal s M.O. before anyone even realizes there is a crime committed. All these quirky traits fascinate us from the outside looking in, we become the sidekick, hanging on to every word as if we blinked we d miss a life lesson. Whilst reading The Purloined Letter I found myself fascinated by the character of C. Auguste Dupin . They were in different units to the white men. Riots and fights occurred when black men from northern America had to face the discrimination in the south during training. This lessoned peoples opinion of them, in a prejudice way. They were never allowed to join the Marines or the Air Corps, but this changed for the first time during the war due to the military needs. The case was brought to court by the NAACP and won the right for him to enrol. President Kennedy also sent troops in to protect the young man when he was enrolling but riots broke out ending in 375 people injured and two dead. The rest of the state universities in the south were slowly desegregated. In the north, blacks and whites attended different schools because they lived in different parts of the city or state. The laws to desegregate the schools were not just for the south. So they brought in bussing. This meant that black children could get the bus to white schools that had been desegregated so there was a racial balance in the schools. A lot of northern cities resisted this court order, and some cities even fire bombed the buses. To get around these laws, many white people sent their children to private schools. Most black children stayed in public schools due to lack of money. There wasn t just racial segregation in schools. Restaurants and buses are just a couple of the other places where racial segregation occurred. Racial segregation on public transport was enforced by the Jim Crow laws. However, both men have very different motivations fueling them and these motivations cause them to make rash decisions in extenuating conditions. Each man is motivated simultaneously by family, honor, and pride. Achilles and Hector both clearly value family. For Achilles his family is the men who fight beside him. When one of them is killed in battle he makes the passionate verdict to retaliate with vengeance. His need to destroy his enemies is what eventually seals his fate. To say the least family is of high priority to Achilles. Hector on the other hand, is not overly concerned with family in the heat of the war. Yes, he does express concern for their well being should anything happen to him, nevertheless he gives no sympathy to those who love him. Working for a government owned aerospace company and seeing the amount of capital required to send an object into space, I have always wondered if spaceflight could ever be commercialized in the private sector. The cost associated with spaceflighthas always been so expensive and provided little monetary return on investment, that only the government could afford to fund the research development, building, launching, and monitoring. • 18. Critical Analysis Of The Man He Killed In this poem, The Man He Killed , the poet Thomas Hardy explores a complex theme, which is war, using the simplest language. Throughout this essay I will be discussing the thoughts and opinions Hardy has on war. The Man He Killed was written in the nineteenth century during the Boer War that took place in South Africa in 1898. This war was because the British Empire wanted to take control over the land because of its rich gold and diamonds. The poem is written in a conversational tone, with speech marks, making us feel that the soldier is talking directly to us reminiscing about killing a foe whilst at war. The speaker in this poem is a man of low class who was unemployed and had already sold all his possessions and consequently had no choice but to join the army; this can be seen when the man states just as I was out of work had sold his traps . Hardy is showing us that some people join the army just out of desperation not because they believe in the political side of war. These unemployed, low classed people have no other way of earning the money to help them survive so they turn to the only other option the have joining the army. The speaker is forced to kill another man which he claims was his foe and later on realises that he and the man had a lot in common. During this poem the man is forced to kill another man and the repetition of because implies hesitation and uncertainty about why he shot the man. He tries to reassure himself by saying just so: my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some work better than others, so an analytical breakdown would be required to be able to tell which factories and countries are more effective than others, and what they do to get that way. The function of organized work and division of labor has been around since ancient times. On the timeline of organized work, the closer one gets to modern day, the more organized labor becomes, and the more labor gets divided. It started with the three basic job groups, food, child care, and shelter (Kranzberg, 1). Then, in places such as Greece, Rome, Egypt, and Mesopotamia, labor was divided up by social classes. The rulers and nobility were the ones overseeing the work and directing the economy, (Hannan, 2), while the priests held knowledge of writing, reading, math, and the more scholarly subjects. Next down the line were clerks and scribes, (Kranzberg, 2), and then merchants and traders underneath them who bought and sold goods. Then there were peasants, slaves, and lastly prisoners of war who were forced to work. We can see some similarities of this ancient hierarchy in modern day. The social/working pecking order of ancient times hasn t faded. We have the government officials, the politicians, the doctors lawyers, the modern merchants and salesmen, the working class, and even convicts who work to earn credit or are even forced to work. ... • 21. Representation Of The Hollywood Television Industry Representation Matters: Diversity in the Hollywood Television Industry A recent study done by the UCLA Bunche Center for African American Studies showed the lack of diversity within Hollywood by examining all the films released, television programs on broadcast, cable, or digital networks, as well as the actors, writers, directors, and producers within the industry. Ethnic minorities make up about 40% of the American population but still remain underrepresented in all forms of entertainment. The study also discovered that more than 50% of moviegoers in the past two years were minorities. In television, minorities only claimed about 7% of lead roles in broadcast television ( NEW! 2015 Hollywood Diversity Report ). With half the American population consisting of different ethnicities, American television should accurately and proportionately portray the American people, yet some are having trouble doing so. Some television networks have catered to their diverse audience by casting actors of different ethnicities as the lead of a show, or by centering an entire show around a unique culture. Most have found this to be beneficial with an increase in ratings and in profits through their sponsors. • 32. The Policy Behind the Welfare Reform Act The Welfare Reform Act of 1996 was enacted in order to change the current welfare policy at the time. This welfare policy that existed was originally meant to provide financial assistance as well as decent healthcare coverage during times of economic hardship (Kaestner, 2004). This policy was implemented as a way to help hundreds of thousands of families overcome financial hurdles. However, the idea behind the reforming of welfare was to avoid the stereotypical individuals that lived off of welfare to continue doing so. Evidence existed that concluded that people who lived off of government welfare assistance were actually allowing this system to destroy their desire to work and sustain themselves (Rector Marshall, 2013). Welfare was seen as a detrimental part of the government and it was viewed as feeding into a lazy and poorly disciplined class of individuals. Welfare s initial intention was to aid widows who had children to support, but in a matter of decades the entire welfare system converted from being a safety net for individuals in dire times of need, to a support system for able bodied men who lacked motivation to find employment and sustain themselves and their families (Rector Marshall, 2013). The Welfare Reform Act came as a way to remedy these problems. Stipulations were put on those applying to receive welfare benefits. Aerobic respiration requires for oxygen to be present in order to create energy, which it can be done by the chemical of ATP. As for anaerobic respiration it s quite opposite It doesn t need oxygen to create energy. The alternative they produce energy is by use of nitrogen, or sulfur. Fermentation comes into action when respiration is low. This process will only include mostly just carbohydrates with just low levels of oxygen. 2. The lens is located behind the iris and the pupil, this tissue is fundamental in order to complete the visual process. The lens is made of water and proteins; those proteins are organizing in a precise way that keeps the lens clear letting lights pass perfectly through the retina. When people age some of those proteins can move and clump together clouding a part of the lens making it harder for the person to see with the affected eye. Additionally, I will discuss the rise of capitalismbased on Heilbroner point of view. Both feudalism and capitalism are defined by many scholars in various ways. As for capitalism, the land is considered a commodity that can be bought and sold. The legal framework includes universal enforcement of property rights. Second:Workers In feudalism, the system of wage labor didn t exist. The serf lives off the land and is forced to work in return, they get food and protection. They don t have a work contract or wages. They do not have the option to leave, and they work even if the conditions are unbearable. When the land is transferred to another lord, the serf will have a new lord to obey. Unlike feudalism, in capitalism work is a contract based between employer and worker, so does have a system of wage labor. Workers had freedom whether to terminate their contract or not. If the worker does not like their current job, the worker had some flexibility to decide what to do next, stay or leave. As Adam Smith states If profits or wages are too low in one trade area, there will be an evacuation of capital and labor until the supply is better adjusted to the demand (Heilbroner, 1999) In regard to buying and selling of labor power. But by simply keep kids in a rear facing position can be 500% times safer. In 100 car accidents, 8 children will die or have serious injuries in a rear facing car seatcompared to the 40 children that will die or have serious injuries in forward facing car seats. Putting a childin a forward facing car seat, before their second birthday, that creates uninformed decisions that can cause incomplete growth, serious injuries, and death. First, the biggest problem is the myths that go along with car seats and car seat safety. CNN reports that 24% of parents will turn their children around before they reach two. • 54. Anne Frank Essay Introduction: Have you ever had a hard time in your life? The Holocaust was a very tough time for the Jews, they were forced to either find a place to stay or they would get sent off to concentration camp, which was leading to their last breath. Anne Frank and her family, had to stay in an annex to try to stay away from the Nazi s because they were Jewish. They had to be really quiet during the day or they would be heard from down below. However, there is one special girl that handled it very well. Anne Frank once said, In spite of everything, I still believe people are really good at heart. Throughout all the obstacles that Anne and her family have faced, she is always looking for the good in people. After reading the diary, I have come to a decision. Anne s quote really said a lot about her and others around her. I am agreeing with Anne s powerful quote. The others that were in hiding with Anne really had to persevere and help each other out. When I read the diary I saw that the most caring person was Miep. She always helped them when they needed something outside of the annex, but I can still see how people think that people during those days were not very good at heart. I think Mr Van Daan seemed a little rude and selfish about others. My Side: After I saw many acts of kindness, throughout the play, based off of Anne s diary, I was persuaded to agree with her quote that everyone is good at heart. The character that stood out the most to me was Miep. She showed me at the beginning of the book when they all moved into the annex. On page 8, the dialogue goes on to say, Narrator: (indicating the sink cupboard) Miep: We put the stores of food you sent in here. Narrator:( She crosses to the shelves.) Miep: Your drugs are here soap, linen, here. Mrs. Frank: Thank you, Miep. Miep: I made up the beds the way Mr Frank and Mr Kraler said. Forgive me. I have to hurry. I ve got to go to the other side of town to get some ration books for you. During this scene, the Franks and the Van Daans had just moved into hiding and were trying to settled in quickly. They knew that they were lacking on the materials that they needed. Mr Frank thought about his workers that weren t Jewish, then he said Miep. Miep was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
