The Impact Of The U. S. Steel Corporation
The global economy has not always been driven by large corporations. In fact, the idea and product of
these globalized giants were not truly prevalent until just over a hundred years ago. In the first year of
the 20th century works were under way to create a business firm that was so large it would become the
world s first large corporation. J.P. Morgan and a group of companies in the steel industry developed
and created the U.S. Steel Corporation. The company would go on to become America s first billion
dollar organization due to being built around nearly all major producers of steel, iron, and coke at the
time. A near monopoly on the industry had effectively been developed and created. While this
institution was private not all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The result is almost 24 trillion dollars of equity shares in just the top 500 firms alone. These same
firms are responsible for actively employing over 43 million people everyday. That doesn t even
include the hundreds of millions of people indirectly controlled in their supply chain. This of course
only includes the top publicly traded firms. As of 2012 there are more than 3.6 million registered
corporations globally. Based on the numbers above it is easy to see the great amount of power that is
held in the hand of the few. Two great examples come from Google and Walmart two of the world s
largest corporations. Google s Gmail service currently serves approximately 900 million people today.
That s greater than the population of Europe as a whole. With that many people actively engaged in
one company s product the influence the company can have is vast. Not to mention that this is only
Google s email service, I won t even go into discussion on the ad placement aspect of the company.
Walmart on the other hand illustrates another great example. Every week the company host more than
250 million people in its stores in America alone. Almost 80% of the United States will shop at the
store at some point during the year. The amount of electricity that is used by its stores alone ranks
above 12 states in power consumption at .05% of produced electricity per year. Now while it can be
measured conceptually how big these firms are it is hard to measure

The Importance Of Water In Michigan
Living around the Great Lakes like we do in Michigan brings a lot of advantages. We have a great
amount of water, unlike much of the United States. Water has shaped Michigan to its shape over the
past thousands of years. The total area of Michigan is 96,716 miles squared. The total surface of the
Great Lakes is 94,250 miles squared. Michigan is surrounded by 4 of the 5 Great Lakes like shown in
figure 1. The Great Lakes include Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. Water
has shaped Michigan to the shape it is by many different ways. Erosion, transportation, deposition,
glaciers, and manmade causes.

It takes all of them to change the land to where it was thousands of years ago. It is still changing today,
and will continue to change for as long as we can imagine. The causes range from human causes to
natural causes. The beautiful state of Michigan is a prime example of how water has shaped us to what
we are now. We take for granted the beautiful Great Lakes we have. We need to conserve what we
have. We are lucky enough to have such a beautiful lake such as Lake Superior that we need to count
our blessings and remember that it could be taken away within

President Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal
When President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected in 1932, he took office in one of the worst
economic crises in American history. The preceding three years were three years of significant
hardship that took a toll on the nation s morale. He won the presidency in a landslide vote over the
fairly conservative incumbent Herbert Hoover showing the American people were desperate for
changes that could restore the nation to economic prosperity seen in the 1920 s. Once he was
inaugurated, he quickly jumped into action. In the first couple of years of his presidency he passed
legislation that created a few dozen government programs trying to fix anything from unemployment
to fraud in the stock market. Most of these programs were successful. By the 1940 s, most of the
public s confidence had been restored as well, exemplifying the extent of the success of the New Deal.
Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal was successful because it created programs that restored the public
s morale and that brought relief to many Americans. As of a result of the government programs
created by the New Deal, restoring American morale was a success. The Tennessee Valley was hit
very hard by the economic downturn. Since the soil was poor, farmers has poor crop yields. The main
source of income for the region was crops. Perhaps one of the most ambitious programs that was a
part of the New Deal, the Tennessee Valley Authority, or the TVA, helped fix these problems therefore
restoring morale in a very

Male And Female Offenders Similarities
The patterns and rates of offending between males and females have several similarities, as well as,
differences. The nature of the offences is also varied and the level of penalty is also different. While it
can be considered that both males and females equally engage in minor offences and abuse of
substances, the rates for men are higher than that of women. This paper will discuss the differences
and similarities that exist in the United Kingdom. To begin, there are numerous differences that can be
cited between female offending and male offending. Generally, studies show that women tend to
engage in crime less often than their male counterparts. It is shown that men are more predisposed to
committing a crime than women (Coid, Petruckevitch, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

several characteristics that the offenders possess that is similar in both instances. First most offenders,
both male and female are extremely poor. Poverty is considered one of the major driving factors for
the commission of a crime. Most of the offenders in prison, both male and female, have alcohol and
drug use problems. a large number also suffers from mental problems (Fergusson Horwood, 2002).
There are also high incidences of physical abuse, sexual abuse, as well as, emotional abuse. Both

The Use Of Personal Privacy On The Internet
Additionally, young adolescents personal information disclosure social websites such as My Space has
increased worries of their parent s parents worries as regards to the loss of privacy (Romer 2006;
Lenhart and Madden 2007; Livingstone 2008). Privacy may often harm the well being of users,
especially young. The use of personal privacy can result on affect users behavior such as the trend of
sexting among teenagers(Betts, 2009) and cyberbullying (Reed, 2009). Privacy concerns on

aspects and the rise of privacy concerns among users of social media platforms. Take Facebook as an
example of social networking, based on statistics from Facebook, Facebook has more than 350 million
active users. Fifty percent of these users log in daily (2010).
In United States, Facebook accounts for 7% of the total consuming time online (Lipsman, 2010)

Surgical masks and rubber gloves, bright florescent lights and the smell of sanitation, the continuous
rhythmic beeping signifying a real beating pulse. Surgery is a very complicated process that needs to
be performed with experience and precision. The surgeon s movements should be conducted with
ease, muscle memory perfectly in tune. Memory is also a very complicated idea, but is not something
as mechanic and reliable as a surgeon should be. Memory is something we use in our everyday lives;
frequently we accidentally fail to use it. Whether it s where we put the remote or the name of...that one

Psychologists Craig Stark and Yoko Okado from Johns Hopkins University devised a study where
participants viewed 50 photos. Shortly afterwards they were shown the pictures again, with slight
changes. A couple of days later, the subjects were tested in their memory of the photographs. Some
participants recounted information true to the first set of photos, representing true memory, while
some recounted information true to the second set, representing false memory. When shown the
second set of information, some participants unconsciously came to the belief that the particular
information shown was the correct information, an example of memory distortion. These distortions
are showing us that our brain may only store fragmented, compressed bits of information, Stark says.

Comparing Gilgamesh And Hebrew Bible
The two great floods in both the Gilgamesh story and in the Hebrew Bible have many similarities and
have many differences. In both stories the gods planned to destroy the Earth because they did not like
the way that people were behaving and felt that they should be punished for their actions. Like the
story of Noah in the Hebrew Bible, Utanapishtim was warned by a god that a great flood was coming
and that he should build a boat to protect himself, his family and the animals (81). Both gods
instructed the two men to build a boat in specific cubit measurements. After both floods they boats
landed on the mountains and birds were used to find land. Although these two great flood stories have
many similarities they also have a few differences. For instance, in the great flood in Genesis the
length of the boat was 300 cubits, the width was 50 cubits and the height was 30 cubits. In Gilgamesh,
the boat was ten dozen cubits in height and ten dozen cubits square (82). The two floods also did not
last the same amount of time; the flood in Genesis lasted for 40 days and 40 nights whereas the flood
in Gilgamesh only lasted for 6 days and 6 nights. The flood in Gilgamesh was not determined by just
one God like in the story of Noah, but was determined by a group ... Show more content on

It teaches us that the gods are a force to be reckoned with and that when you disobey the gods you will
not be punished lightly. If the humans honor the gods the way that they should then they will have
nothing to worry about. As long as they listen and obey the gods all the days of their lives they will be
protected from harm. In ancient Middle East, it seems as though some people did have a strong
relationship with the gods, maybe because they heard the stories of the great flood and they did not
want that to happen to them. People probably think it s a good idea to be on God s side so they will be

Johnny Weissmuller Research Paper
Every four years, a special event calls people from all over the world to compete for glory and fame.
This event is called the Olympics. Since 1896 thousands of people have competed and thousands of
people have been called legends. One of great legends of swimming was Johnny Weissmuller. He
battled through health issues and the unencouraging words of others to become one of the greatest
legends of the 1900s. Not only was he a legend of swimming, but he was also a legend on television.
Johnny Weissmuller had a successful career as a swimmer and as an actor during the booming age of
television. Johnny Weissmuller had many troubles in his early life which helped him swim and be the
person he was. At age nine Weissmuller contracted the disease polio. His doctor recommended that he
should learn how to swim to help keep him healthy and active. Soon after, he joined the YMCA swim
team and started his career as a swimmer. He attended college only for a while, then dropped out to
work numerous jobs. At one job he was working as a elevator operator at a hotel, he met one of his
past swim coaches that coached him to two championship wins. At this time Weissmuller was not
swimming, but his past swim coach, and friend, convinced him back into swimming. Soon after this,
Weissmuller was winning again and again. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Why John Greens Is Called Paper Towns
It s a paper town. I mean, look at it, Q: look at all those streets that turn in on themselves, all houses
that were built to fall apart. All those paper people, living in their paper houses, burning the future to
stay warm. (Green, p57) Quentin is also known as Q in the story, falls in love with his neighbor Margo
after they take a late night trip to go and play pranks, getting revenge on old friends and break into
SeaWorld, as Margo wanted. She s not the typical girl, she has a passion for electric music and
breaking into people s houses and old, abandon buildings. After their crazy night, Margo goes missing,
no one had any idea where she went. They thought she was just going out for a few nights, but they
come to realize she wasn t coming back, she wanted someone to find her, someone meaning Quentin.
Paper towns are a confusing yet very meaningful title to this book, she also leads Q to these paper
towns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These reasons are very cool and intelligent of the author to put these into his story. One of the reasons
this book is called Paper Towns is because where the author says that Margo and Q live is actually a
real paper town. Where they play mischievous pranks on people is also an actual paper town. Another
reason is because Margo does research on paper towns and marks paper towns on the maps that Q
finds as some of the clues she leaves for him to find her. She uses the paper towns because they lead to
abandoned places and the middle of nowhere and it confuses him and makes him sometimes believe
that she is dead, yet he still never gives up. He was determined to find her dead or alive. A third reason
this is called paper towns is because Margo sends Q to the paper towns and some of the places he
actually finds clues to where to try and look next. Quentin actually ended up finding her at a paper
town she had marked. She was in an old, rundown, crumbling piece by piece

Symbolism In Virginia Woolf s Rope
As mentioned above, Porter s writings were influenced and shaped by the literary works she read in
her childhood, in particular, her usage of symbolism is greatly due to the influence of Lauren Sterne,
Jane Austen, Billy Bronte, Virginia Woolf s habitual usage of symbolism. This element of writing is
widely seen in Rope , as Katherine Porter prominently uses several items as ways for manifesting the
themes laid deep in her mind. First of all, the rope itself might be seen as symbolic, because it is used
to tie things up,or bound people if considering the implementation of rope in the story. At the
beginning of the story, a quarrel sparks out due to the husband buying rope, and while it hasn t been
yet decided whether the rope is going to stay with them, the quarrel continues/goes on. This can be
interpreted as the rope being a tying force of the couple, an since the wife doesn t want the rope, there
is no way for them to bound or unite. However, at the moment the rope was been decided to be left
with them, harmony prevails and the couple is connected again. Thus, the retainment of rope results in
the couple s reunion, being symbolic of the rope tying people together. While the starting off
pessimistically, there is a scent of optimism by the end of the story. In addition to the rope, coffee can
also be considered as a symbolic item in Rope . Coffee can be seen as a representation of warmth and
affection in their relationship. The wife s drastic need for coffee can be

Essay on Comparing Death of a Salesman and Fences
When it comes to comparing and contrasting two different cultures and morals the differences can be
night and day. In Death Of A Salesman and Fences, these stories follow two middle class families
around the same time period (late 1940 1950 s), who are both facing problems within their own
household s. From marital issues to failing father/son relationships, both of these stories paint a picture
to the audience of what life in an urban family living in that time setting was like through the author s
eyes. And even yet with all the things between these two plays that make them alike, there are also
many things that make them very different. In Fences we follow Troy Maxon, an ex baseball player

Willy s son Happy constantly stands in biff s shadow while Lyons is Troy s son from a different
mother who never saw Troy through his childhood due to Troy being in jail, unlike Corey, so its
almost as if he stands in Corey s shadow as well though Troy nor Rose treats him any differently.
Unlike Willy and Linda, who seem to put more attention towards Biff than Happy. So it seems that the
boys all have similarities between them but the way they are treated by their mother and father are
where the differences lay.
In Death Of A Salesman Willy treats his wife Linda, as though he does not appreciate her. He talks to
her disrespectfully and even ignores her on occasion, and even though he does this blatantly she still
stands by his side and acts as his support. In Fences Troy treats his wife Rose with a certain amount of
respect but when he does step out of line Rose is not the one to take it. A perfect example of this
would be the fact that both men had found a way to have an extramarital affair, and both for
validations reasons. Linda chose to ignore the fact that Willy was having an affair. By ignoring what
was happening, Linda did not have to admit to herself what was going on, and saved herself some
difficult choices. Linda was not strong enough to make those choices. When Rose found out that Troy
had been unfaithful she chose to leave him. And even through it all she still chose to take care of the

The Transformation Of American Law Essay
Horwitz, in The Transformation of American Law: 1780 1860, argues that a commercial elite class
worked with judges during the antebellum period to shift American law doctrine from anti commercial
to pro commercial doctrines. These new doctrines benefitted the commercial elites and forced America
to adopt capitalism over the original moral economy that was in place prior to the beginning shift in
American law in the 1780 s. Horwitz breaks the book up into eight distinct chapters, focusing on the
changing conception of law, a new conception of property, creating economic growth through the legal
system itself, competition and economic development, the relationship between the bar and
commercial interests, the emergence of contracts, the development of commercial law, and the rise of
legal formalism. The first chapter details the changing concepts of American law in that
instrumentalism became popular. Horwitz shows that judges move away from following precedent
around the turn of the century and instead were focusing on their own interpretations of the law. This
is shown through judges issuing new trials on account of juries issuing verdicts that they believed did
not fit with the evidence provided in the trials (29). Juries during this time were increasingly side lined
during the trial process. The second chapter has Horwitz looking back to the agrarian economy and the
doctrines surrounding property, detailing how these doctrines shifted to an understanding of

An Angry God Edwards

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jonathan Edwards memorable sermon, Sinners in the Hands of
an Angry God , was first delivered in 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut during the peak of New England s
first Great Awakening. When he delivered this sermon with horrid descriptions of hell, the
congregation listened. It left a dramatic effect on the listeners leaving them weeping, and some even
considering suicide! Jonathan Edwards conveyed his message to turn their lives back to religion and
repent to their god by his use of tone, emotional appeal, and imagery. To begin, Jonathan Edwards got
his message across to the congregation by his use of tone. Edwards used repetition throughout his

Unconverted men walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering... (Edwards 122). Here he is giving
very vivid imagery. He is showing that unconverted men, or people not reborn again, are walking a
very thin line to an unpleasant afterlife. The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds
a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked:his wrath
towards you burns like fire...: (Edwards 123). In this metaphor Edward does a perfect job of
comparing a spider to them. He is saying that they unworthy, like a spider, and that they are worthy of
nothing else but the fire. You hang by a slender thread, with the flames of divine wrath flashing about
it... and you have no interest in any Mediator, and nothing to lay hold of to save yourself, nothing to
keep off the flames of wrath, nothing of your own, nothing that you ever have done, nothing that you
can do, to induce God to spare you one moment... (Edwards 124) In the section Edwards is trying to
have the crowd imagine themselves hanging by a very small thread, with nothing to help them.
Nothing in the moment can help them with their fate, and it has already been decided what will
happen to them. To sum it up, Edward s sermon is filled with an abundance of imagery to frighten
listeners into seeking God and avoiding

Pressure Ulcer Snapshot Study
Decision: to increase the frequency of pressure ulcer assessment. Definition of complex care in
relation to case The expression complex care denotes the impact multifarious diagnoses and their
subsequent implications have on an individual, and therefore the varying facets of care management
required. This may be due to physical, developmental, behavioural or emotional conditions requiring
various long term interventions to ensure survival and positive quality of life (McPherson et al. 1998).
A more recent paediatric specific definition, taking into consideration the advances in healthcare

To justify this option the nurse needed to be certain that this would be concluded prior to the potential
development of a pressure ulcer, requiring knowledge of how quickly pressure ulcers can develop.
National guidance regarding the necessity of repositioning children at risk of pressure ulcers four
hourly (NICE 2013) suggests that immobility exceeding four hours influences pressure ulcer
development, however research into how quickly pressure ulcers can develop, particularly in the
paediatric population, is scarce. A frequently cited study into pressure duration influence found
external pressures exceeding a patient s diastolic blood pressure can bring about a pressure ulcer
within 6 hours, and pressure four times the systolic pressure can bring about a pressure ulcer in under
1 hour (Reswick and Rogers 1976, cited in Gefen 2008). Although etiologically useful, these findings
could be considered difficult to implement practically, given the complexity and feasibility of
measuring such pressures regularly in

Electroencephalography Essay
Electroencephalography is a form of measuring electrical activity in the brain using electrodes that are
attached to the scalp. EEGs are interpreted by looking at amplitude, frequency, and shape of the waves
that are formed. The significance of the results relies on patient specific information such as age, state
of the patient, and the location of the electrodes on the scalp. Different areas of the brain can produce
different wave patterns. There are four types of wave forms: alpha, beta, theta, and delta. Frequency is
key in determining normal and abnormal EEGs, with normal frequencies ranging between 0.5 500
Hertz. Each wave type has its own range of normal frequencies, because each wave has its own set
characteristics.
Alpha waves are present in all age groups, but most commonly adults. They occur on both sides of the
head, usually having a higher amplitude on the nondominant side. Alpha waves tend to be more
posteriorly located and are associated with relaxation. Alpha waves are not present when a person is
stressed, their eyes are open, or they are at attention. An abnormal alpha wave is known as an alpha
coma, where the alpha waves are seen in both anterior and posterior parts of the head usually
indicative of a person who is unresponsive to stimuli. Beta waves are also observed in all age groups,
tend to have a small amplitude, are symmetric, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of Lee s The Great Gatsby By F. Scott...
At the age of 1 to 16, there is one odd girl who had turned my world upside down. Daphne Lee was

outside, she seems completely ordinary, but not so much on the inside. She does not have any
problems mentally or physically, though I am surprised she does not. She has changed my perspective
on everything. Her obligation to rainbow bunnies can be a bit bizarre, but her persona is wonderful

but that is what makes her different from the rest of the world.

Even during the summer, she will wear them with her sandals. Nothing looks wrong with her feet, she

kind. She has two drawers filled entirely with them. From my perspective, it seems like she has
enough to last her for two years. Periodically she chooses to speak a different language. One day she
speaks English, the next day Spanish, etc. and gibberish eventually. Her taste in music is very
interesting because she seemed like the kind of person who liked happy songs, but she actually likes
very dark music such as metal and screamo. My cousin is very different from our other relatives I

In public, she gets really crazy. Not just a little crazy but hyper crazy. She is constantly up and about.
She is not afraid to blare her music for the whole world to hear. People are usually looking over their
shoulders, their attention to the creepy dancing ballerina bunny. I try to keep my distance. When there
is candy involved, there is more crazy to come. She gets as mad as a hatter; Singing, skipping,
hopping, and running around in circles. When nonsense talking becomes involved, I usually speed

Additionally, children may isolate themselves or face ostracization, which leads to the degradation of
a child s purity as he begins creating his own unique worldview apart of his community. Parents are
the closest influence on a developing child. Therefore, their mature actions are bound to accumulate
over the child, instigating his growth from childhood innocence. This is especially true when parents
perform their intense habits in front of their kids. This is outlined by Theodore Roethke who recalls
his father through a poem. He states how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leads to a loss of innocence as the child begins maturing individually and creating their own
unique worldview. J.D. Salinger Highlights this in Catcher in the Rye through Holden Caulfield, and
then reveals the huge remorse which this character faces for isolating himself. Near the end of the
novel Salinger reveals that Holden sort of [misses] everybody [he] told about... (Salinger) his life and
with whom he interacted. This demonstrates that Holden did have some meaningful connections in his
life at one time, but eventually lost them because of his isolation, which caused a large amount of
regret and loss of his innocence. This is most evident as Holden states that he even missed that...
Maurice... who was a pimp that solicited Holden earlier in the book. That scene, in which Holden
hired a prostitute, was the penultimate indicator that Holden was isolating himself. Even though he is
a teenager, Holden traveled to a city alone to perform mature tasks in order to prove that maturity to
himself. These grown up activities ultimately lead to Holden s dissatisfaction with adulthood. By the
end of this novel, Holden is stuck reminiscing about his past and yearning to go back his childhood.
Because of his isolation and desire to be mature, Holden essentially lost all of his innocence and fully
transformed from a child to an adult. Similarly many children lose their innocence as a result of their
own changing views of the world. Seamus Heaney outlines this in Blackberry Picking where he states
that, each year [he] hoped [his blackberries would] keep but knew they would not. (Heaney) This is an
important reminder that time is the ultimate thief of childhood. Despite a lack of outside influences,
Heaney compares his childhood to blackberries to convey that eventually, both would rot. In time, he
knew that nothing completely pure in his

Similarities Between Egypt And Babylon
The Kingdoms of Egypt and Babylon are arguably two of the most recognized and taught about
kingdoms of the ancient world. Although, both kingdoms played major roles in biblical times and are
written about extensively in the bible, this paper does not use the bible as part of the research process,
simply due to the fact that outside of the religion of Christianity, the bible is thought of as an historical
book filled with fables and mythology. The research reflected in this paper shows the similarities of
the Egyptians and Babylonians in religious practices, social strata, and economies. The economies of
both Egypt and Babylon are similar in that both kingdoms sit on the bank of a mighty river. There are
also a great many similarities in religion, both kingdoms built temples, worshiped mythical gods, and
offered sacrifices to the gods. The social structure of Egypt and Babylon are nearly identical, being

each other. The amount of reading one would have to do to perform an extensive and detailed research

fact that Egypt has been a part of the world stage since nearly the beginning of man and the changes
that each ruler would make as they ascended to the throne, would be an exercise in futility. The

What was the intended message and intended audience of both texts? What evidence tells you this? In
both texts, an anti war message is present and they are both directed to everyone. In War , the
pacifistic, anti war message was spread thin to a plethora of lines throughout the song however it was
still extremely influential and cogent. This is evident through the hook of the song, War! What is it
good for? Absolutely nothing! , and the verses. Out of all the inspiring verses in the song, I deem Oh,
war, I despise Cause it means destruction of innocent lives War means tears to thousands of mothers

The Second World War
Second World War
World War II was one of the greatest struggles humanity has ever seen. This Second World War
caused many lives to be lost, damaged personal properties and was expensive, for a great deal of
money was required to maintain a country s military strength. The numbers for those that have passed,
been wounded or gone missing during the war could never be calculated precisely; though it has been
estimated that more than 55 million lives perished. Many historians have traced the causes of World
War II to the problems left unsolved by the First World War (1914 1918). World War I and the treaties
that ended it also created new political and economic problems. Forceful leaders and dictators in

Many nationalists viewed foreigners and members of minority groups as inferior. Such beliefs helped
nations justify their conquest of other lands and the poor treatment of minorities within their borders.
Nationalism was a chief cause of World War I, and it grew even stronger after that war.
Nationalism went hand in hand with feelings of national displeasure. For instance, many Germans felt
humiliated by their country s defeat in World War I and its harsh treatment under the Treaty of
Versailles. During the 1930 s, they enthusiastically supported an aggressive nationalistic organization
called The Nazi Party. The Nazi Party declared that Germany had a right to become strong again.
Besides Germany nationalism also gained strength in Italy and Japan.
The Peace of Paris established an international organization called The League of Nations to maintain
peace. Each country backed its own interests at the expense of other countries which prevented The
League from working effectively. Therefore only weak countries agreed to submit their disagreements
to The League of Nations for settlement. While strong nations reserved the right to settle their disputes
by threats or force.
The political unrest and poor economic conditions that developed after World War I enabled
dictatorships to arise in several countries. Especially in those countries that lacked a tradition of
democratic government. During the 1920 s and

The Global Automobile Industry in 2009
1To have a thriving and growing economy you have to have a strong manufacturing base that is
outputting quality goods in large quantities. In the case of the United States much of the economy in
the past has been built on housing sales and the automotive industry. America s modern automotive

Baltimore based on a 100,000 population was 600 robberies, 37.4 rapes, and so far 131 homicides just

Violent crimes that happen in Baltimore or anywhere else not only affect the city itself and residents
but the country as well because what is happening in a city one day, might spread to another city the
next day. Also the way people respond to violent crimes by doing protests in a unsafe and un peaceful

The aim for women in Jane Austen s time was not to get a professional career. Women at any rate in
the middle classes and in the prosperous families did not get an education and work, at this time
women s education was to learn to dance, play the piano and sing. With that their career was to get
married to a good husband and a good husband meant a wealthy man which meant a life without any
economic worries. If she did not marry her brother and father had to provide for her. If she did not
have a brother she would have to live off what she had inherited off her father, which was often very
little. Thus one can understand the importance of marriage at this time in the past. Yet in today s
society the time in which Bridget Jones s Diary was directed women could usually provide for
themselves. This was because unlike Austen s time an education and a job is now available to females.
In this was they are not economically dependent on a husband, and marriage is not seen as an urgency,
yet it is still seen as an ideal.
This urgency to be married is shown continuously throughout Pride and Prejudice. It is seen as very
desirable for women to be married in their early twenties, this is shown as Charlotte Lucas purely
marries Mr. Collins in convenience as she was in her late twenties and was ‘running out of time. Yet
in Bridget Jones s Diary it was shown that it is

Ernest Hemingway Apathetic American Stereotypes
Apathetic Americans
Stereotypes have shaped the way people think about the World and everyone around them. They are
undeniably over exaggerated, but are based on a sliver of truth. For example, stereotypical Americans
are seen as rude, stupid, greedy, and very patriotic. In the case of Americans, Donald J. Trump is the
embodiment of the American stereotype. During his presidential campaign, Trump made many vulgar
remarks, and his goal was to make America great again. These American stereotypes are also apparent
in Ernest Hemingway s short stories, most notably in Cat in the Rain, The Short Happy Life of Francis
Macomber, and the interchapters of In Our Time. Hemingway s short stories portray Americans as
being insensitive to the World around them. Americans are insensitive through their insatiable greed,
emotional unawareness, and cultural disregard. Hemingway s Americans continual desire for more
alienates them from the rest of society, proving their lack of understanding for the world. In Cat in the
Rain, an American couple is vacationing in Italy. Instead of admiring the beauty of their surroundings,
the Americans instead focus on irrelevant trivial pursuits, illustrating their greed. After going down to
retrieve the cat, the wife is immediately attracted to the hotel owner, proving Americans ever evolving
want for new things: She liked the way he wanted to serve her. [...] She liked his old, heavy face and
big hands (Hemingway 130). Instead of staying loyal to her husband, the American wife forgets he
exists and moves on to the next best person she finds, showing the apathy Americans possess for what
they already have. Additionally, the hotel owner is simply doing his job, and the American wife s
failure to realize this results from her greed, which severely clouds her judgement. The greed
Americans possess is further proven with the American wife s childish behavior throughout the story.
When the wife cannot find the cat, she complains, I wanted it so much [...] I don t know why I wanted
it so much (130). Back in the hotel room, the wife demands to her husband that she want[s] to pull
[her] hair back, and to have a kitty to sit on [her] lap and purr when [she] stroke[s] her (131). The

minimum wage. Although they were making a little bit more money there were many negative effects
on women and children. Women had gone from housewives to the hardworking woman who honestly
risked their lives in these horrible factories. The women were in danger more than men because while
working in the factory they had long skirts that could easily get stuck in the machinery. They also got
the same treatment and weren t allowed any breaks. Women were punished as well if they got tired
and weren t doing their work efficiently. The women were not with their families as often because
they had to work all day and by the time they got home it was too late at night. Unfortunately, children
work also as young of the age of six years old. Children were paid unfairly and usually were made to
do the dirty work. Working at these disgusting factories many children as well as adults caught
diseases and were malnourished.
In conclusion, the Industrial Revolution had a major impact on the society back then and had lead to
things we use today in the modern era. The industrial revolution was a time of progress. The
inventions being manufactured allowed people to prosper, while at the same time put people in
poverty. The chaos between

The Importance of Trotsky, Lenin and Stalin to the...
Trotsky, Lenin and Stalin were all important in bringing the Communist Dictatorship in Russia from
1917 1939. All three of them wouldn t be able to make progresses without each other.
The basement or a trigger to communism in Russia was Lenin as he was the organizer. He has been
studying Marxism and Socialism for many years and in the result he has brought the October
Revolution in 1917 to Russia. In addition Lenin has written many books in order to spread the idea of
communism. As he was the organizer of this revolution and the person who led the Bolshevik take
over of Russia in 1917 he became the first leader of Russia in communist regime. Later on he
introduced Cheka and other forms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Trotsky even helped Lenin to create and maintain the Bolshevik dictatorship of Russia in 1917.
Opposition could take over and execute Lenin, if they won the Civil War. However Trotsky prevented
it, by organizing and forming huge Red Army in order to fight the whites to make Lenin s dictatorship
safe from overthrowing. There was a massive rising in Kronstadt, because the sailors were unhappy
with the lack of progress, the famine and the terror and they demanded free speech and press, sale of
peasant grain, free elections for soviets and free trade unions. Of course this was impossible in
Communist regime and consequently Trotsky used his Red Army to destroy and crush rebels, because
he was worried that dissent might spread when the ice around the base thawed and let the sailors leave
and again he made dictatorship safe. Furthermore by believing in Permanent Revolution , Trotsky
even helped Lenin to promote communism around the world. Trotsky even recognized the economic
crisis in 1920 and suggested a change of policy to encourage businesses, but Lenin rejected it at first,
however later on Trotsky s idea was supported by Lenin and NEP was introduced. All the points above
say that Trotsky has played an important part in Lenin s life and his career. All in all it is clear to see
that Trotsky would not have been able to

Narrative Progression In Margaret Atwood s Happy Endings
Happy Endings is a short story written by Margaret Atwood. The story is different than what readers
may be used to because it doesn t follow a traditional plot line. Instead, Margaret s story follows an
experimental narrative progression . This type of story progression is a way that an author can
manipulate, contort, or obscure the 5 Stages of Plot structure (Hillard, Point of View in Fiction ). In
this essay, I will explore how experimental narrative progression is used in Happy Endings , how it
works in the story, how it relates to the story, and my opinion on experimental narrative progression in
Margaret Atwood s Happy Endings . How is experimental narrative progression used in Happy
Endings ? This type of story progression is used in this story because the story as a whole doesn t go
in order of a traditional plot line. The first story (the original story) serves as the ending for each of the
other versions that Margaret provides for the reader. Each of the new versions follow the same
characters as in the original story, but they lead different lives. For example, in the original story the
two characters fall in love with each other but in the next version of that story the man doesn t love the
woman even though she still loves the man. Also, Happy Endings uses experimental narrative
progression because there are several beginnings and middles based on the story as a whole. However,
there is only one ending which is the original story.

Advantages Of Montessori Teaching Method
What is the best way to teach children? This is a question that people have been asking since they
began teaching. There are a plethora of teaching methods that have been tried and used throughout
history. Each method claims to be the best, but can they be supported through a Christian world view?
The Montessori teaching method teaches children to be independent and teach themselves. While
large or whole group instruction feeds on the child s sheep like nature in following what their peers are
doing and teaches every student the same lesson at the same time. Montessori and large group
instruction are two teaching methods that are proven to work and can be trusted and used with a
Christian perspective. The Montessori teaching method that has been around since 1907. Dr. Maria
Montessori was the first woman to earn a physician s degree in Italy. After graduating she taught a
class of fifty students and developed her own way of teaching. She believed that children were born
with absorbent minds and were fully capable of self directed learning. Montessori developed the
framework for a prepared educational environment in which children, empowered with the freedom to
choose how they would spend their time in school, would seek out opportunities to learn on their own
(5 Alternative Teaching Methods). Montessori classrooms are made of quite, uncluttered
environments, and are filled with several games and activities that cater to self directed learning. Most

  • 2. The Impact Of The U. S. Steel Corporation The global economy has not always been driven by large corporations. In fact, the idea and product of these globalized giants were not truly prevalent until just over a hundred years ago. In the first year of the 20th century works were under way to create a business firm that was so large it would become the world s first large corporation. J.P. Morgan and a group of companies in the steel industry developed and created the U.S. Steel Corporation. The company would go on to become America s first billion dollar organization due to being built around nearly all major producers of steel, iron, and coke at the time. That doesn t even include the hundreds of millions of people indirectly controlled in their supply chain. This of course only includes the top publicly traded firms. As of 2012 there are more than 3.6 million registered corporations globally. Based on the numbers above it is easy to see the great amount of power that is held in the hand of the few. Two great examples come from Google and Walmart two of the world s largest corporations. Google s Gmail service currently serves approximately 900 million people today. That s greater than the population of Europe as a whole. With that many people actively engaged in one company s product the influence the company can have is vast. Not to mention that this is only Google s email service, I won t even go into discussion on the ad placement aspect of the company. Walmart on the other hand illustrates another great example. Every week the company host more than 250 million people in its stores in America alone. Almost 80% of the United States will shop at the store at some point during the year. The amount of electricity that is used by its stores alone ranks above 12 states in power consumption at .05% of produced electricity per year. • 4. President Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal When President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected in 1932, he took office in one of the worst economic crises in American history. The preceding three years were three years of significant hardship that took a toll on the nation s morale. He won the presidency in a landslide vote over the fairly conservative incumbent Herbert Hoover showing the American people were desperate for changes that could restore the nation to economic prosperity seen in the 1920 s. Once he was inaugurated, he quickly jumped into action. In the first couple of years of his presidency he passed legislation that created a few dozen government programs trying to fix anything from unemployment to fraud in the stock market. Most of these programs were successful. By the 1940 s, most of the public s confidence had been restored as well, exemplifying the extent of the success of the New Deal. Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal was successful because it created programs that restored the public s morale and that brought relief to many Americans. As of a result of the government programs created by the New Deal, restoring American morale was a success. The Tennessee Valley was hit very hard by the economic downturn. Since the soil was poor, farmers has poor crop yields. The main source of income for the region was crops. In both stories the gods planned to destroy the Earth because they did not like the way that people were behaving and felt that they should be punished for their actions. Like the story of Noah in the Hebrew Bible, Utanapishtim was warned by a god that a great flood was coming and that he should build a boat to protect himself, his family and the animals (81). Both gods instructed the two men to build a boat in specific cubit measurements. After both floods they boats landed on the mountains and birds were used to find land. Although these two great flood stories have many similarities they also have a few differences. For instance, in the great flood in Genesis the length of the boat was 300 cubits, the width was 50 cubits and the height was 30 cubits. In Gilgamesh, the boat was ten dozen cubits in height and ten dozen cubits square (82). The two floods also did not last the same amount of time; the flood in Genesis lasted for 40 days and 40 nights whereas the flood in Gilgamesh only lasted for 6 days and 6 nights. • 11. Symbolism In Virginia Woolf s Rope As mentioned above, Porter s writings were influenced and shaped by the literary works she read in her childhood, in particular, her usage of symbolism is greatly due to the influence of Lauren Sterne, Jane Austen, Billy Bronte, Virginia Woolf s habitual usage of symbolism. This element of writing is widely seen in Rope , as Katherine Porter prominently uses several items as ways for manifesting the themes laid deep in her mind. First of all, the rope itself might be seen as symbolic, because it is used to tie things up,or bound people if considering the implementation of rope in the story. At the beginning of the story, a quarrel sparks out due to the husband buying rope, and while it hasn t been yet decided whether the rope is going to stay with them, the quarrel continues/goes on. This can be interpreted as the rope being a tying force of the couple, an since the wife doesn t want the rope, there is no way for them to bound or unite. However, at the moment the rope was been decided to be left with them, harmony prevails and the couple is connected again. Thus, the retainment of rope results in the couple s reunion, being symbolic of the rope tying people together. While the starting off pessimistically, there is a scent of optimism by the end of the story. In addition to the rope, coffee can also be considered as a symbolic item in Rope . Coffee can be seen as a representation of warmth and affection in their relationship. The wife s drastic need for coffee can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Transformation Of American Law Essay Horwitz, in The Transformation of American Law: 1780 1860, argues that a commercial elite class worked with judges during the antebellum period to shift American law doctrine from anti commercial to pro commercial doctrines. These new doctrines benefitted the commercial elites and forced America to adopt capitalism over the original moral economy that was in place prior to the beginning shift in American law in the 1780 s. Horwitz breaks the book up into eight distinct chapters, focusing on the changing conception of law, a new conception of property, creating economic growth through the legal system itself, competition and economic development, the relationship between the bar and commercial interests, the emergence of contracts, the development of commercial law, and the rise of legal formalism. The first chapter details the changing concepts of American law in that instrumentalism became popular. Horwitz shows that judges move away from following precedent around the turn of the century and instead were focusing on their own interpretations of the law. This is shown through judges issuing new trials on account of juries issuing verdicts that they believed did not fit with the evidence provided in the trials (29). Juries during this time were increasingly side lined during the trial process. The second chapter has Horwitz looking back to the agrarian economy and the doctrines surrounding property, detailing how these doctrines shifted to an understanding of ... • 16. Electroencephalography Essay Electroencephalography is a form of measuring electrical activity in the brain using electrodes that are attached to the scalp. EEGs are interpreted by looking at amplitude, frequency, and shape of the waves that are formed. The significance of the results relies on patient specific information such as age, state of the patient, and the location of the electrodes on the scalp. Different areas of the brain can produce different wave patterns. There are four types of wave forms: alpha, beta, theta, and delta. Frequency is key in determining normal and abnormal EEGs, with normal frequencies ranging between 0.5 500 Hertz. Each wave type has its own range of normal frequencies, because each wave has its own set characteristics. Alpha waves are present in all age groups, but most commonly adults. They occur on both sides of the head, usually having a higher amplitude on the nondominant side. Alpha waves tend to be more posteriorly located and are associated with relaxation. Alpha waves are not present when a person is stressed, their eyes are open, or they are at attention. An abnormal alpha wave is known as an alpha coma, where the alpha waves are seen in both anterior and posterior parts of the head usually indicative of a person who is unresponsive to stimuli. However, influences from both family and society impose standards of maturity on children which gradually strip the youthfulness away from a child. Additionally, children may isolate themselves or face ostracization, which leads to the degradation of a child s purity as he begins creating his own unique worldview apart of his community. Parents are the closest influence on a developing child. Therefore, their mature actions are bound to accumulate over the child, instigating his growth from childhood innocence. This is especially true when parents perform their intense habits in front of their kids. This is outlined by Theodore Roethke who recalls his father through a poem. He states how ... This demonstrates that Holden did have some meaningful connections in his life at one time, but eventually lost them because of his isolation, which caused a large amount of regret and loss of his innocence. This is most evident as Holden states that he even missed that... Maurice... who was a pimp that solicited Holden earlier in the book. That scene, in which Holden hired a prostitute, was the penultimate indicator that Holden was isolating himself. Even though he is a teenager, Holden traveled to a city alone to perform mature tasks in order to prove that maturity to himself. These grown up activities ultimately lead to Holden s dissatisfaction with adulthood. By the end of this novel, Holden is stuck reminiscing about his past and yearning to go back his childhood. Because of his isolation and desire to be mature, Holden essentially lost all of his innocence and fully transformed from a child to an adult. Although, both kingdoms played major roles in biblical times and are written about extensively in the bible, this paper does not use the bible as part of the research process, simply due to the fact that outside of the religion of Christianity, the bible is thought of as an historical book filled with fables and mythology. The research reflected in this paper shows the similarities of the Egyptians and Babylonians in religious practices, social strata, and economies. The economies of both Egypt and Babylon are similar in that both kingdoms sit on the bank of a mighty river. There are also a great many similarities in religion, both kingdoms built temples, worshiped mythical gods, and offered sacrifices to the gods. For instance, many Germans felt humiliated by their country s defeat in World War I and its harsh treatment under the Treaty of Versailles. During the 1930 s, they enthusiastically supported an aggressive nationalistic organization called The Nazi Party. The Nazi Party declared that Germany had a right to become strong again. Besides Germany nationalism also gained strength in Italy and Japan. The Peace of Paris established an international organization called The League of Nations to maintain peace. Each country backed its own interests at the expense of other countries which prevented The League from working effectively. Therefore only weak countries agreed to submit their disagreements to The League of Nations for settlement. While strong nations reserved the right to settle their disputes by threats or force. • 37. Ernest Hemingway Apathetic American Stereotypes Apathetic Americans Stereotypes have shaped the way people think about the World and everyone around them. They are undeniably over exaggerated, but are based on a sliver of truth. For example, stereotypical Americans are seen as rude, stupid, greedy, and very patriotic. In the case of Americans, Donald J. Trump is the embodiment of the American stereotype. During his presidential campaign, Trump made many vulgar remarks, and his goal was to make America great again. These American stereotypes are also apparent in Ernest Hemingway s short stories, most notably in Cat in the Rain, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, and the interchapters of In Our Time. Hemingway s short stories portray Americans as being insensitive to the World around them. Americans are insensitive through their insatiable greed, emotional unawareness, and cultural disregard. Hemingway s Americans continual desire for more alienates them from the rest of society, proving their lack of understanding for the world. In Cat in the Rain, an American couple is vacationing in Italy. Instead of admiring the beauty of their surroundings, the Americans instead focus on irrelevant trivial pursuits, illustrating their greed. After going down to retrieve the cat, the wife is immediately attracted to the hotel owner, proving Americans ever evolving want for new things: She liked the way he wanted to serve her. [...] She liked his old, heavy face and big hands (Hemingway 130). Instead of staying loyal to her husband, the American wife forgets he exists and moves on to the next best person she finds, showing the apathy Americans possess for what they already have. Additionally, the hotel owner is simply doing his job, and the American wife s failure to realize this results from her greed, which severely clouds her judgement. The greed Americans possess is further proven with the American wife s childish behavior throughout the story. When the wife cannot find the cat, she complains, I wanted it so much [...] I don t know why I wanted it so much (130).
