3. Kadayawan Festival
The Kadayawan Festival is held
on every third week of August.
In 2019, the celebration was
extended from 2 to 31 August.
In 2020, it was celebrated from
10 to 17 August. The festival is
celebrated in the City of Davao.
4. Origin of the Festival
The KadayawanFestivalwas
originated from Davaoand its concept
came from the beliefs of Davao’s
cultural tribes. Back then, the ethnic
tribes would go to Mt. Apo so they can
celebrate and perform rituals to pay
tributes to the nature gods.

In that time, the festival was called
the Apo Duwalingand was named
after three wonders you can find in
Mindanao. Soon, it was renamed as
the KadayawanFestivalin 1988 by
RodrigoDuterte. The word
“Kadayawan”comes from the
greeting “Madayaw” which means
good, valuable, superioror beautiful.

5. Essence of the
Festival
The KadayawanFestivalis being
celebrated to give thanks for the
gifts of nature and to their
cultures. The festival consists
four ideas which are tribal,
industrial,arts, and to entertain.
One of the points of Kadayawan
Festivalis to entertain,it is done
by Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan
which means dance in the
streets. Thanksgivingis the type
of this festival because it is a
festival that celebrates the gift of
life and the wonders given to us.
KadayawanFestival truly
embraces Davao’s culture
because of the local foods, music,
and dancing in the streets.
6. The costumes of
Kadayawan Festival are
all different and is
chosen by the tribe so we
can distinguish what
tribe it is. The dance of
the festival is called
“Indak-Indak” a term for
dance, is also the
highlight of the festival
because it is a street
dance competitionthat
consists of colorful
costumes. The
competitionhas dancers
that dance to the beat of
the drumbeats and the
performance is based on
the traditions of Davao.
