A prominent and rising theme in literature is grotesque literature. The type of literature that is just
weird or off , although it can be oddly fascinating to read. Grotesque writing has been around for at
least a century, so there are many examples of this theme in literature. However, I will just be

The Hunger Artist tells a story of a man that fast for days on end, and people come to watch him

Written in 1890, this story discusses the life of women suffering from depression. What I find
grotesque in The Yellow Wallpaper is the character s way of thinking. Her thinking doesn t seem to be
completely sane, you can see this as she describes the wallpaper. The character uses descriptive words

Enlightenment, the transcendent theme brought forth by the authors related to the disintegration of

prevailing mode of rationality. Glancing over this 70 year old theoretical book, one may interpret the

Adorno s time. Nevertheless, their work undoubtedly remains relevant. Enlightenment thinking,
Horkheimer and Adorno argue, has led contemporary society and its citizenry to their present state of
