When an advanced degree of technology is applied
to packaging, it is commonly referred to as 'smart
packaging’.
Smart packaging typically includes some form of
technology, such as sensors, tracking systems, or
indicators, that allow the packaging to perform a
variety of functions.

6. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) ³
 (RFID) is accomplished through wireless communication between
reader chips located on antennas, these antennas then work as
scanners.
 RFID technology can read multiple tags simultaneously
 RFID chips are ideal for material tracking, inventory management,
tool tracking, access control, medication adherence, and more.

7. Near Field Communication or NFC
 NFC labels uses as a gateway to a mobile or web application is a
safe and secure method for patients to track their medication
adherence and progress in a health plan.
 Patients can easily add new prescriptions, vitamins, or confirm that
they have taken their dose by simply tapping on the tag
 This information is then automatically recorded in the application,
making it easy for patients to monitor their medication adherence.
 Patients can also export this information to provide a complete
health picture to their healthcare provider during their next visit.

8. Temperature Indicating Labels
 Temperature Indicators are labels with intelligent inks that can
reveal if a temperature excursion has taken place.
 Some can be customized to determine excursion both for
temperatures that are too low or too high.
 These can also be used to ensure the product has been in a stable
temperature by applying the ranges on the packaging to ensure
safety.
