Surgical procedure
and intervention
Procedures and treatments help to diagnose, treat and manage your organ
condition. Sometimes, procedures help to give your doctor more information
about your organ condition.
There are many different types of procedures and treatments for body organ
disease. Depending on the severity of your organ condition, you may need more
than one procedure and surgical treatment.

5. THE MOST COMMON NEUROSURGICAL
PROCEDURES
Craniotomy
Craniotomy is a surgical procedure that
involves the removal of the skull. A portion of
the skull-bone is removed in this surgical
procedure to allow direct access to the brain
underneath. His surgery can effectively treat a
variety of neurological disorders. After the
surgery is performed successfully, the bone-
flap (the dissected part of the skull) is
replaced, leaving no sign of the disruption.
6. Lumbar Puncture: A lumbar
puncture, also known as a spinal
tap, is a procedure that is used
to diagnose a variety of
problems in the central nervous
system.
7. Additional interventions include the following:
Shunts: a small passage that allows movement of fluid
from one body part to another
Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (ventricul/o =
ventricle, periton/o = peritoneum, -eal = pertaining to)
Used in the treatment of hydrocephalus
Shunts cerebrospinal fluid from the ventricles of
the brain to the peritoneum
8. What is a bronchoscopy?
A bronchoscopy is a procedure that allows your
doctor to take a detailed look at your airways and
lungs. Using an instrument called a bronchoscope,
your doctor can examine all of the structures that
make up your respiratory system, including your:
Larynx
The smaller airways
Bronchoscopy
9. Chest Drain
What is a chest drain?
A chest drain procedure (or pleural drain
procedure) drains air, blood or fluid through a
tube that is inserted into the space surrounding
your lungs, called the pleural space.
10. Lung Transplant
What is a lung transplant?
A lung transplant is surgery to replace one or both
of your lungs with lungs from a donor. Lungs will
be donated to you from a person who has
recently passed away and was a registered organ
donor.

Cardiovascular surgical
PROCEDURES

12. Coronary artery bypass
grafting (CABG).
In CABG — the most common type of heart
surgery — the surgeon takes a healthy artery or
vein from elsewhere in your body and connects it
to supply blood past the blocked coronary artery
13. Heart valve repair or
replacement
Surgeons either repair the valve or replace it with an
artificial valve or with a biological valve made from
pig, cow, or human heart tissue. One repair option is
to insert a catheter through a large blood vessel,
guide it to the heart, and inflate and deflate a small
balloon at the tip of the catheter to widen a narrow
valve.
14. Aneurysm repair
A weak section of the artery or heart wall is
replaced with a patch or graft to repair a
balloon-like bulge in the artery or wall of the
heart muscle.
16. Common Types of Gastrointestinal Surgical Procedures
Colon and Rectal Surgery – Treats disorders of the large intestine,
including the rectum, colon, and anus.
Nephrectomy – Removes a diseased or cancerous kidney.
Appendectomy – Removes an infected appendix, the small finger-like
pouch at the end of the large intestine.
Cholecystectomy – Removes gallbladder to treat gallstones.
Bariatric Surgery – Makes the stomach smaller to help with weight loss.
Splenectomy – Removes the spleen.
17. Common Types of Gastrointestinal Surgical
Procedures
Hiatal Hernia Repair – Fixes paraoesophageal hernias and Hiatal hernias. A
hiatal hernia is an opening in the diaphragm (the muscle separating your
chest from your abdomen) that shifts stomach or other abdominal organs
into the chest, causing eating or breathing difficulty, heartburn, or chest or
abdominal discomfort.
18. Common surgical procedures associated with the
musculoskeletal system:
Musculoskeletal surgery refers to a number of surgical procedures that
aim to improve, manage, or treat disorders, diseases, injuries, or
congenital conditions of the musculoskeletal system. This organ system,
which involves the bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles, is
responsible for providing form and support, ensuring stability, and allowing
movement to the human body.
Musculoskeletal surgical procedures are performed by surgeons
specializing in orthopaedics.
19. Common General
surgical and
procedure intervention
Endoscopy
:
Endoscopy (en-DOS-koh-pee) is the visual examination
of the interior of a body cavity (endo means within,
and -scopy means visual examination).
20. Common General surgical and
procedure intervention
Centesis:
Centesis (sen-TEE-sis) is a surgical puncture to remove
excess fluid or to remove fluid for diagnostic purposes.
22. Common General surgical and
procedure intervention
biopsy. A biopsy is a diagnostic test involving the
removal of tissue or cells for examination under a
microscope. This procedure is also used to
remove abnormal breast tissue. A biopsy may be
done using a hollow needle to extract tissue
(needle biopsy), or a lump may be partially or
completely removed (lumpectomy) for examination
and/or treatment
23. Common General surgical and
procedure intervention
Cataract surgery. Cataracts cloud the normally
clear lens of the eyes. Cataract surgery involves
the removal of the cloudy lens, which is replaced
with a clear artificial lens implant.
24. Common General surgical and
procedure intervention
Cesarean section (also called a
c-section). Cesarean section is
the surgical delivery of a baby
by an incision through the
mother's abdomen and uterus.
This procedure is done
when doctors determine it a
safer alternative than a vaginal
delivery for the mother, baby,
or both.
25. Common General surgical and
procedure intervention
Hemorrhoidectomy. A
hemorrhoidectomy is the
surgical removal of
hemorrhoids, distended veins in
the lower rectum or anus.
63. MYRINGOTOMY SET
myringotomy is a
procedure to
create a hole in
the ear drum to
allow fluid that is
trapped in the
middle ear to
drain out
64. ORTHOGNATIC SET
Jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic (or-thog-
NATH-ik) surgery, corrects irregularities of the jaw
bones and realigns the jaws and teeth to improve the
way they work.
