Chapter 4: Ecosystems
Lesson 3: What are food
chains and food webs?
Text Book Page 155-157
Identify: Producer, Consumer,
Herbivore and Carnivore
What you ate for
breakfast?
Did anyone eat sunlight for breakfast?
All living creatures need
energy to survive, and a food
chain illustrates the flow of
energy from producers to
consumers and decomposers.
A food chain shows which animals
eat other animals or plants.
Some energy
cannot flow upward
in the pyramid
because most of
the energy has
changed.
What other
ways animal
might use
energy?
Energy moves from
one organisms to
another when it is
eaten.
Each step in this
transfer of energy is
known as a trophic
level
The main trophic levels
are producers,
consumers, and
decomposers.
Lets Recall
–Herbivores eat only __________.
–Carnivores eat only ________________.
–Omnivores eat ____________________.
–Decomposers are detritivores that
________________organic matter into simpler
compounds.
decomposer
carnivore
Food chains are an important part of
the learning process about life.
The energy flow from one trophic
level to the other is know as a food
chain.
Food Chain
What might forest ecosystem
food chain consist of?
Food Web
Most organisms eat more than
JUST one organism
When more organisms are involved
it is known as a FOOD WEB
Food webs are more complex and
involve lots of organisms
The direction of the arrow
points  in the direction of the
energy transfer, NOT “what
