The best Canon 50mm lens? Find out why…

This lens (the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens) will help you take pictures like a pro! (read
                                        more..)

Read why people love this lens so much…
I’m not a professional photographer by any stretch of the imagination, but I do love taking and
looking at great photos!

I love photos that are crystal clear, lots of light and color; the ones that make you feel like
you’re actually looking at the real thing (or at least get you to imagine that you’re part of the
picture). If you’ve ever looked at a screensaver image of a beach or ocean or the picture of a
bride who looks like she’s close enough to touch, then you know what I mean. Well, that is the
reason why I’ve written this review. I’ve always thought that to take pictures like that, you have
to be some sort of photography wiz kid or something (like I said, am not pro).

I looked into this lens because I’m kinda tired of my basic digital camera that produces “ok”
pictures. I have young kids and sometimes trying to get images that capture the moment
(they’re always moving) is not easy with a basic digi cam, especially in low light conditions! So I
started to do some research to try and fine something that will help produce quality pictures that
my family and I can cherish for years to come. That’s when I stumbled upon the canon EF
50mm f/1.4 USM lens.

In my opinion, the best canon 50mm lens out there. But before I tell you why it’s so good,
here’s what customers who have bought this product from amazon had to say about it (more to
follow later):

                                                                                              1/6
Customer feedback…

Read why people love this lens so much…

“This 50mm is amazing. I truly love it. I debated a long time between the 1.8 and the 1.4. In the
end, I figured I’d never replace it again so get the 1.4. I love it – the images it makes are
                                           staggering…“

” If you want to shoot indoors without a flash, get the 1.4.”

“The f1.4 will likely have a much longer life than the cheaper plastic build of the f1.8, and retain
more resale value. It’s an investment, rather than a commodity”

“The Nifty Fifty (Canon 1.8 50mm) is still a great buy considering the price, but you don’t
realize what you’re missing until you step it up a notch. The quality (build and optical) of the 1.4
                                       is vastly superior. “

Why professional, amateur and casual photographers love the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
                                          lens?

Read why people love this lens so much…

                                             Versatile!

                                     Great for low light shots!

                                     Can be used anywhere!

One reason users love this lens it because it is extremely versatile. ..you can do most things you
want to do with this lens.

You can use it in almost any condition. For example, these lenses are absolutely great for low
light conditions. So if you’re taking wedding photos in a church with low lighting, when you
can’t use a flash or on a cloudy day, this is a great lens. It is quite light weight, which makes it
great to travel with. Because of this, you will be well-advised to keep the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4
USM lens as an extra lens ‘just in case’ your other lenses fail you!

Even in low light, it produces sharp, colorful, bright images. Taking photos indoors in a pleasure
with this lens.

                                       Pictures look so real

                                                                                               2/6
One of the best things about the 50mm lenses is that they copy the field of vision of the human
eye. This comes through in pictures beautifully! Your pictures will look real, like you’re looking
out of a window. Makes you feel part of the shot. This is one reason why these lenses are called
“normal or standard lenses.”

Why it produces much brighter pictures than others on the market.

The reason the the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens is able to produce such clear, high quality
pictures is all because of its maximum aperture.

The maximum aperture is the maximum diameter of the lens opening (also know as its minimum
f-number). An aperture is the hole or an opening of the lens (which lets in light). The maximum
aperture is different from lens to lens and it is included in the lens model number. In the case of
the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens, the maximum aperture is f/1.4.

Why is this useful? Good questions! The maximum aperture is used to determine the brightness
of the picture you will be taking. So how bright will your image be. A lens with a wide maximum
aperture (lower minimum f-numbers) produce brighter images because they let in more light
than a lens with a small maximum apertures (higher minimum f-numbers). In general aperture
                  sizes largest to smallest as: f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6 and f/8 f/

Therefore the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens will produce bright images because it has the
largest aperture (smallest f-number) according to this list.

Lenses with wide maximum apertures are referred to as “fast”. The reason they are called fast
is because they project a really bright, sharp and clear image on image sensor, reducing the
time to keep focusing to try and get a sharper image, which allows faster shutter speeds.

In addition, wider maximum apertures allow smaller depths of field that soften backgrounds,
meaning the wider the maximum aperture the greater the softening effect and the more the
subject appears to be separated from the background.

                                                                                             3/6
No need to buy a new camera to fit this lens…

As long as you have a Canon EOS SLR or digital camera, you will be to attach the Canon EF
50mm f/1.4 USM lens to your camera. You do not need to buy a new camera to start using this
                                         lens.

                                    Autofocus…but flexible too!

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens has an electro focus (EF) mount, which means that it has
the ability to focus automatically. But better still, you also have the felxibility to adjust the focus
manually (following autofocus) if you want to do so.

The ability to autofocus saves you time between shots and also means you can capture
moments a lot quicker (like fast moving kids!) because you’re not wasting time trying to focus
                                       (unless you want).

This lens also comes with something called an ‘Ultra Sonic Motor’, which is the motor used to
autofocus and it is supposed to be quicker, quieter etc than than the non USM types.

So how big is this thing? Is it heavy?

One of the best things that make the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens is very popular with
users is that it is quite small (WxL: 2.9? x 2?/73.8mm x 50.5mm) and light weight (10.2
                                            oz/290g).

The size and weight makes it ideal for carrying on long trips or taking to weddings etc. You get
great photography on the move, without having to lug around a huge bag just to carry the
‘stuff’ that go with the camera. Huge plus for us too!

                                          Common Issues

As promised throughout this site, we give you the positives and negatives with any of the
products we review, therefore, please see below some complaints about the Canon EF 50mm
f/1.4 USM lens and also how to overcome this problem:

Common Issues or Complaints:

The problem: Most complaints about the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens centre around issues
that it is ‘soft’ when shot wide open (produces blurred images, not sharp). A lot of lenses are
made to be used wide open and they produce sharp images.

The solution: in order to get sharp images when shooting wide open with the Canon EF 50mm
f/1.4 USM lens, you should NOT activate autofocus or focus-recompose! So basically direct
your focus sensor onto the exact spot you want to focus on and DO NOT activate autofocus. If
you do, this will ensure(100%) that your lens will focus BEHIND the intended centre of focus…so

                                                                                                  4/6
giving that soft image. Problem solved!

                                          Is it expensive?

What does the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens cost?

The 50mm lenses are generally pretty cheap. You can buy a Canon 50mm F1.8 lens for as little
as $100. However, a higher grade version would cost you anything from about $200 or more.
The price will depend on the brand you buy or it’s availability.

The highest grade 50mm lenses will easily cost you thousands, for example, something like the
Panasonic/Leica 25mm F1.4 lens , which is very popular, will cost around $1,000!

For more accurate prices, please head over to Amazon.com

                                More feedback from customers

“I do not regret purchasing this lens! After owning this lens for a couple of months now, I have
                                       really grown to like it”

“I can’t even think of how many thousands of photos I’ve taken with this lens, and my opinion
is always the same: this lens is incomparable”

“You get what you pay for”

“This is the 50mm to go with. Excellent sharp lens. Right out of the box you can feel the
                                     difference in quality”

“A must have for every Canon DSLR owner. Anyone with kids should have this. Anyone doing
talking head and close up video should have this. Anyone who loves photography should have
this. If you ever have seen a beautiful shallow depth of field shot and wished you could take a
picture like that now you can. Even a novice will love this lens.”

Common Issues As promised throughout this site, we give you the positives and negatives with any of the products we review, therefore, please see below some complaints about the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens and also how to overcome this problem: Common Issues or Complaints: The problem: Most complaints about the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens centre around issues that it is ‘soft’ when shot wide open (produces blurred images, not sharp). A lot of lenses are made to be used wide open and they produce sharp images. The solution: in order to get sharp images when shooting wide open with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens, you should NOT activate autofocus or focus-recompose! So basically direct your focus sensor onto the exact spot you want to focus on and DO NOT activate autofocus. If you do, this will ensure(100%) that your lens will focus BEHIND the intended centre of focus…so 4/6

You can buy a Canon 50mm F1.8 lens for as little as $100. However, a higher grade version would cost you anything from about $200 or more. The price will depend on the brand you buy or it’s availability. The highest grade 50mm lenses will easily cost you thousands, for example, something like the Panasonic/Leica 25mm F1.4 lens , which is very popular, will cost around $1,000!
