In the small town of Barnhart, Texas, there is no water coming out of
the faucet anymore. Drought and climate change may be partly to
blame, but the real drain on the drinking water supply is shale gas
fracking.
Hydraulic fracturing, commonly called fracking, is a method used by oil
and gas companies to extract natural gas out of shale rock. The process intended to
produce energy is a natural resource hog, particularly when it comes to water.
A fracking well uses up to of fresh water, which is contaminated with
hundreds of to create fracking fluid. The mixture is
forced into horizontal well pipes under pressure great enough to in
otherwise stable ground. The wells often , rendering
massive amounts of water unsafe for humans, livestock, and wildlife.

all that has been lost.
