Research Significance





There are approximately
2.5 million bridges on the
global higher
transportation network.
20% deficient
Almost 500,000 bridges
require remediation and
improvement.
Mississippi River bridge collapse






In 1990: A rating of
"structurally deficient,"
citing significant corrosion
in its bearings.
In 2005: Rated as
"structurally deficient"
and in possible need of
replacement.
On August 2, 2007, the
Governor stated that the
bridge was scheduled to
be replaced in 2020.
Entre-os-Rios Bridge Collapse






Collapsed in 2001.
The collapse was
caused by the failure
of a support pillar that
came under increased
pressure from river
water following a
period of heavy rain.
70 people were killed.

  • 2. A New Approach to Bridge Infrastructure Management Presented by: Maria Rashidi
  • 3. Research Significance    There are approximately 2.5 million bridges on the global higher transportation network. 20% deficient Almost 500,000 bridges require remediation and improvement.
  • 4. Mississippi River bridge collapse    In 1990: A rating of "structurally deficient," citing significant corrosion in its bearings. In 2005: Rated as "structurally deficient" and in possible need of replacement. On August 2, 2007, the Governor stated that the bridge was scheduled to be replaced in 2020.
  • 5. Entre-os-Rios Bridge Collapse    Collapsed in 2001. The collapse was caused by the failure of a support pillar that came under increased pressure from river water following a period of heavy rain. 70 people were killed.
