CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App
In-person test on February 10, 2014
Overview:
For our Civic User Testing session, we tested the iPhone app for EveryBlock.
Target Group:
 CUTGroup members who have an iPhone as a primary or secondary device – 269 users
 Chicago residents from different areas of Chicago
 A selection of testers that had varied responses to these screening questions:
o How many times do you post a tweet on Twitter?
o What is your main news source?
Test Type:
 In-person test for 10- 15 participants
 This was our first test where every tester was asked questions by a proctor and the
responses were captured via an online form.
 Proctors asked a variety of questions:
o “Yes” or “no” questions to gather quantitative results
o Open-ended questions to see what users were interested in doing
o Leading questions are asked so users will visit specific areas of the website and
respond with their experience
Questions:
 Are there any problems using the iPhone app? Does the app crash?
 Do users have an easy time posting or commenting on the app? Do they find things they
want to comment on?
 Do users like the different pages in the app?
 Would users use this app and in what scenarios might they post or comment? Would they
use it "on the go"?
 What features do users want to see in this app?

where she lived, and researched police activity in certain neighborhoods.
Native Chicago Community Adventurer (#3) and Just Generally Curious (#5) both use
EveryBlock for the daily digest e-mails.
What makes you decide whether or not to download an app?
 2 out of 12 testers indicated that they do not normally download many apps.
 6 out of 12 testers (50%) indicated that space is a priority when deciding to use an app and
they will download an app if they believe they will use it often.
Native Chicago Community Adventurer (#3) and Hockey Fan (#7) both like apps for news,
media, and other similar information.
Did you allow the app to use your current location?
67% (8) – Yes
17% (2) – No
CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App

17% (2) – No response was selected (this might indicate that testers already signed up to
EveryBlock)
How did you sign-up?
42% (5) – Entered information manually
17% (2) – via Facebook
17% (2) – via Twitter
17% (2) – No response was selected (this might indicate that testers already signed up to
EveryBlock)
8% (1) – Chose profile from Address Book
Was it easy to sign-up?
75% (9) – Yes
25% (3) – No response selected
Tell us more. How can the sign-up experience be improved?
Chicago Teacher (#1) and Techie Pub Trivia Rock Climber (#9) both were confused about
choosing their profile from Address Book.
Amateur Student (#12) wanted a sign-in option through Google.
Grad Student (#8) thought that signing up was easy, but wanted to have more information
about the frequency of e-mails. Grad Student also thought that the “Follow Places”
sentence at the bottom was descriptive, but needed to be located more prominently.
After signing up or opening the app, review the first ("Timeline") page.
Two testers experienced bugs in this part of the test:
Victoria P Test (#4) did not have anything populate on the “Timeline” page. Content
appeared in mobile web but not in the app. Victoria P Test (#4) was able to see content on
“Near You Now” page.
Software Breaker (#10) had an error message appear saying there is a problem connecting
to EveryBlock.
Here are some other comments from testers:
As a new user, Hockey Fan (#7) likes the dialogue and the recommendations and
discussion around restaurants and new events.
Techie Pub Trivia Rock Climber (#9) thought that some of the first few posts felt “spammy,”
but liked the Tribune article and the post on a new local restaurant.
Just Generally Curious (#5)’s expectations are met, but wants a larger element of
personality in the user’s profile in order to help form an opinion better.
Take a few minutes and look through different posts and tell us about viewing different content.
 6 out of 12 testers (50%) thought that the posts were interesting provided relevant
information.
CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App
In-person test on February 10, 2014
 1 of these 6 testers did point out that the media mentions were already found in other
sources, but still likes the information. This tester also says that they might not go to
EveryBlock to ask questions.
 1 tester was interested in having preference settings and filters to show what is relevant to
them.
Did you find a post you would want to comment on?
58% (7) – “Yes”
42% (5) – “No”
If so, go ahead and make a comment and then tell us about how it was making a comment on this
app.
Here are some responses from testers who said “Yes”:
Amateur student (#12) thought that posting a comment was super easy. She liked the fact
that she could preview her comment before submitting.
Application developer (#2) thought it was easy and familiar (like other apps). Application
Developer had a small problem with autocorrect, and thinks it would be nice to edit the typo
in the comment.
Chicago Teacher (#1) was interested in commenting on some posts, but thought other
posts were irrelevant. Chicago Teacher thinks that a timeline should show actual times, and
that the posts should be time-stamped.
Here are some responses from testers who said “No”:
Lifelong Chicago resident (#6) did not think that making a comment was easy, and the
story that she wanted to comment on was not formatted for comments. Lifelong Chicago
resident is a new user, and was not comfortable making comments or posts.
Techie Pub Trivia Rock Climber (#9) found a post that she liked, but after being asked to
verify her e-mail, the program took her back into the browser on her phone and not back
into the app.
Works at Charter Schools, but not a teacher (#11) did not want to make comments or posts
because she was concerned about privacy. She wanted to know how her name would
appear on posts because she did not want to have her full name appear since a lot of
information is connected with her location. She said “it feels sketchy.” Works at Charter
Schools wants “People will see you as” option.
Would you want share posts on social media?
67% (8) – Yes
33% (4) – No
Why or why not? [re: sharing posts]
Here are some responses from testers who said “Yes”:
Grad Student (#8) will post if it’s something interesting. He also said that since he is in
school, a lot of his friends are in the same neighborhood so the topics would be relevant.
CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App
In-person test on February 10, 2014
Amateur student (#12) would share posts that she thought people who followed her should
know or if something is important, or something that she would want to support.
Here are some responses from testers who said “No”:
Victoria P Test (#4) is not sure about sharing posts, and is not clear about how to share a
post on social media if she wanted to. She might consider sharing a newsworthy event in
her neighborhood, but would like to see dates on posts to know if it was timely and share-
worthy.
Just Generally Curious (#5) would not share because if it exists here on EveryBlock, he does
not feel the need to pull the content out. Just Generally Curious rarely posts on social
media, and thinks that “EveryBlock is about the neighborhood, Facebook is about college
friends, and Twitter is for nerd friends.”
Which page did you find most useful?
67% (8) – Timeline
16.5% (2) – Popular
16.5% (2) – Near You Now
Any reason?
Timeline is the most useful:
8 out of 12 testers (67%) thought that Timeline was the most useful page because it
showed the most relevant information.
Application developer (#2) thought this page was the most useful, but found the most
interesting post on the Near You Now page.
Native Chicago Community Adventurer (#3) also thought Timeline was most useful, but
wanted to use Near You Now on the weekends.
Grad Student (#8) wanted to add more zip codes through the app because he wanted to
personalize the Timeline to include other neighborhood information.
Popular is most useful:
2 out of 12 testers (16.5%) thought that Popular page was the most useful because it was
easy to find new information.
Near You Now is most useful:
2 out of 12 testers (16.5%) thought that Near You Now page was the most useful because
these testers were interested in what is going on around them at that time.
Which page did you find least useful?
33% (4) – Near You Now
33% (4) – Popular
25% (3) – Timeline
9% (1) – N/A (thought all pages were useful)
Any reason?
Near You Now is the least useful:
CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App
In-person test on February 10, 2014
4 out of 12 testers (33%) did not think the information on this page was as relevant as
other pages, or were interested in this type of news.
Popular is the least useful:
4 out of 12 testers (33%) thought the Popular page was least useful.
Hockey Fan (#7) liked Near You Now page the most and thought that the Popular page was
least relevant to his surroundings.
Lifelong Chicago Resident (#6) was most interested in pressing local matters in their
community.
Timeline is the least useful:
Victoria P Test (#4) and Software Breaker (#10) both had problems using the Timeline
page.
Amateur Student (#12) did not mind this page useful because it showed mostly media
mentions.
Select the icon to create a New Post. What types of things would you post about?
The app crashed when Amateur Student (#12) clicked on the New Post icon.
6 out of 12 testers (50%) described that they would want to post about their neighborhood:
neighborhood concerns, crime warnings, traffic, weather, favorite places, garage sales,
missing pets, events.
Grad Student (#8) wants to post about events, and likes the fact that you can include
photos in posts.
Works at Charter Schools, but not a teacher (#11) still would not post on the app due to
privacy concerns.
Do you like this new post interface?
75% (9) – Yes
25% (3) – No
If you have something to share, go ahead and make a new post! Tell us what you posted about and
if it was easy to do.
4 out of 12 testers (33%) either had trouble with the new post or did not like it.
Software Breaker (#10) asked “Why do I have a picture of the world there? It’s confusing.”
In addition, he did not like the preview, and wanted to make edits to his post after it was
already posted.
Application Developer (#2) initially had trouble with the making a new post. The app
crashed when she hit “Account Settings,” and then the app did not redirect her after she
posted it, the app instead went to a black screen. Application developer did think that in the
end making a post was very easy and she liked the experience. She also likes that her new
post is labeled as “neighbor’s first post.”
CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App
In-person test on February 10, 2014
4 out of 12 testers (33%) liked the new post interface and thought it was easy.

17% (2) – N/A
Do you like the option of making posts on the go?
83% (9) – Yes
17% (2) – N/A
0% - No
Why or why not?
The majority of testers like the option of making posts “on the go,” but 2 testers were not
sure if they would like it or might use it rarely.
Here are some other responses from testers who said “Yes”:
Application Developer (#2) comments that she is a Twitter user and is used to the this
concept.
Native Chicago Community Adventurer (#3) thinks this option is convenient.
Software Breaker (#10) wants to comment on things when he is out doing them.

and times, and wants to make sure that the Media Mention source is clear.
Grad Student (#8) likes the app but suggested improvements in the formatting to improve
the border, use of negative space. Grad Student would also like to see a nesting of headers

Conclusions
Are there any problems using the iPhone app? Does the app crash?
92% of testers liked the EveryBlock iPhone app, and most testers thought the app was easy to use.
4 out of 12 testers (33%) experienced a bug when using the app.
After signing up or opening the app, two testers experienced bugs in this part of the test.
 Victoria P Test (#4) did not have anything populate on the “Timeline” page. Content
appeared in mobile web but not in the app. Victoria P Test was able to see content on “Near
You Now” page.
 Software Breaker (#10) had an error message appear saying there is a problem connecting
to EveryBlock.
The app crashed when Amateur Student (#12) clicked on the New Post icon. In addition, the app
crashed when Application Developer (#2) hit “Account Settings.” Once she made a post, the app did
not redirect her to a new page, but instead went to a black page.
Do users have an easy time posting or commenting on the app? Do they find things they want to
comment on?
In regards to making a comment, 58% of testers found a post they would want to comment on.
Most testers thought it was easy to make a comment and was similar to other apps.
42% of testers did not want to make a comment. Some testers were not comfortable making
comments, while others addressed privacy issues in making comments. One tester found a post
that she might comment on, but the post was not formatted for comments.
One tester explain that they “feel like not much of a contributor.” For many testers, the decision not
to make a comment is due to personal use of apps and Web sites. Two testers specifically were
concerned about privacy on EveryBlock. A suggestion from a tester is clarity and options to change
how names will appear on posts and comments.
75% of testers liked the new post interface, and when asked what testers would want to post
about, 50% of testers mentioned specific neighborhood news.
33% of testers thought it was easy to post. Testers also mentioned that they liked the preview
button.
Do users like the different pages in the app?
67% of testers thought that “Timeline” was the most useful page. As mentioned before, two testers
did experience problems with this page, and this number could be even higher if these issues did
not appear.
Testers liked this page the most because it showed the most relevant information. Testers were
also interested in the “Near You Now” page when “on the go” to learn more about other
neighborhoods.
CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App
In-person test on February 10, 2014
One tester wanted to add more zip codes to follow through the app to create a more personalized
experience.
Would users use this app and in what scenarios might they post or comment? Would they use it
"on the go"?
89% of testers liked the option of making posts on the go, 17% of testers were not sure if they
would like it or thought they might use it rarely.
The majority of testers thought this was a convenient option, and wants to comment on things
while they are happening. One tester commented that she is a Twitter user and is used this
concept.
What features do users want to see in the EveryBlock app?
While 75% of testers used EveryBlock, none of the testers ever used the iPhone app. Therefore,
some testers had knowledge of the EveryBlock Web site and could compare these experiences.
Testers who were familiar with the Web site were interested in having these features:
 Search feature
 Filters or an ability for users to choose what they want to see
 Bookmark feature to read posts later
 User Profile - more apparent and have incentive to contribute and “gain status” in the
community
 More information on Community Guidelines & Privacy
 Address finder and map capabilities to help find locations
Even testers who did not ever use EveryBlock before, testers were still interested in personalizing
their experience. These testers also wanted to see features like filtering, search bars, and an option
to delete irrelevant posts from the feed.
Two testers would like to see dates and times on posts to see if posts are the most relevant.
67% of testers were interested in sharing posts on social media.
More information on privacy is important to testers. One tester was shocked to find a post during
the test about a break-in because it included the poster’s full name and the address of the break-in.
There should be more options to see how much personal information is being posted, and to
change privacy features within the app.

Yes
Why or why not?
Only about a third of the time.
Go to the menu, and select "Popular" and tell us about this experience.
I like to see that there's an interface based on voting. The only one that might be useful is volunteer
opportunities in Roger Park.
Go to the menu, and select "Near you now" and tell us about this experience.
Nearby news is not fetching, so I reloaded it. (finally loaded after a while). I don't know what thanks

helps form an opinion of the post.

Some of it is relevant to me, and some is irrelevant. I tend to like more news than people's personal

Edgewater Mariano's article - Something that is
affecting the neighborhood. I am interested in this
and feel that bonds you neighbors. I have an
answer for the post, but it's from the EveryBlock
Daily Digest e-mail. I would just link to the post,

Opinions are distracting and add noise to the site.
Would you want share

No
Why or why not?
It exists here on EveryBlock, and don't need to pull the content out.
Rarely post on social media, and I feel like the information silo-ed.
Everyblock is about neighborhood, Facebook is about college friends,
Twitter is for nerd friends.

It's fine. Same response as other pages regarding type of posts.
Would you use the "Near

Why do I have a picture of the world there? It's confusing. The screens seems to go dark quicker than
most other apps. The background color is not as white as I would like. Made the post "Hello, just
goofing around" to Greater Six Corners (custom location). Didn't like the preview. He likes to fix things
after the fact, he doesn't like to proofread his messages. Not a big fan of editing everything I write.

mind this page - "eye doctor for contacts" don't care Popular = lots of comments All stuff I would ask
friends

It looks different from the version of EveryBlock I used in the past. I like this post about stuff for
Valentine's Day. Because it gives me choices for stuff to do in specific places. Mostly seeing media
mentions. (She put in Greek Town, South Loop, and Loop) Post about a new church in the South Loop.
Take a few minutes and look through different posts and tell us about viewing different

I didn't know that Leona's was bought out by Giardano's. Poster wasn't impressed by service. Turns out

Plastic bag recycling is a great post because you don't realize there's not a place to look up something
like that. Dangerous CTA drivers, useful and like. Virtual garage sale, useful and like. Calling dibs. Eye
doctor recommendation. Something about alderman (Joe Moore). Lit an M80 and threw on an elderly
man's porch. I like this popular tab, because it has more user content than my timeline.

CUTGroup 7 EveryBlock iPhone App Final Results

  • 1. CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App In-person test on February 10, 2014 Overview: For our Civic User Testing session, we tested the iPhone app for EveryBlock. Target Group:  CUTGroup members who have an iPhone as a primary or secondary device – 269 users  Chicago residents from different areas of Chicago  A selection of testers that had varied responses to these screening questions: o How many times do you post a tweet on Twitter? o What is your main news source? Test Type:  In-person test for 10- 15 participants  This was our first test where every tester was asked questions by a proctor and the responses were captured via an online form.  Proctors asked a variety of questions: o “Yes” or “no” questions to gather quantitative results o Open-ended questions to see what users were interested in doing o Leading questions are asked so users will visit specific areas of the website and respond with their experience Questions:  Are there any problems using the iPhone app? Does the app crash?  Do users have an easy time posting or commenting on the app? Do they find things they want to comment on?  Do users like the different pages in the app?  Would users use this app and in what scenarios might they post or comment? Would they use it "on the go"?  What features do users want to see in this app?
  • 2. CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App In-person test on February 10, 2014 Results: 12 users tested the iPhone and gave us feedback, below are some key highlights for each question. Which of these statements is most accurate for you? 67% (8) – “My iPhone is my primary device when I am away from another device & on the go” 25% (3) – “My iPhone is my primary device to connect to the Internet” 8% (1) – “I do not use my iPhone often to connect to the Internet” How long have you lived in Chicago? 49% (6) – 10+ years 17% (2) – 5–9 years 17% (2) – 1–4 years 17% (2) – Less than 1 year How long have you lived in your current neighborhood? 42% (5) – Less than 1 year 33% (4) – 1–4 years 17% (2) – 5–9 years 8% (1) – 10+ years Have you ever used EveryBlock? 75% (9) – Yes 25% (3) - No Have you ever used the iPhone app for EveryBlock? 100% (12) – No 0% - Yes If you ever used EveryBlock, tell us more about how you use it. Here are some responses: Amateur Student (#12) studied journalism and used EveryBlock to look up crime around where she lived, and researched police activity in certain neighborhoods. Native Chicago Community Adventurer (#3) and Just Generally Curious (#5) both use EveryBlock for the daily digest e-mails. What makes you decide whether or not to download an app?  2 out of 12 testers indicated that they do not normally download many apps.  6 out of 12 testers (50%) indicated that space is a priority when deciding to use an app and they will download an app if they believe they will use it often. Native Chicago Community Adventurer (#3) and Hockey Fan (#7) both like apps for news, media, and other similar information. Did you allow the app to use your current location? 67% (8) – Yes 17% (2) – No
  • 3. CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App In-person test on February 10, 2014 17% (2) – No response was selected (this might indicate that testers already signed up to EveryBlock) How did you sign-up? 42% (5) – Entered information manually 17% (2) – via Facebook 17% (2) – via Twitter 17% (2) – No response was selected (this might indicate that testers already signed up to EveryBlock) 8% (1) – Chose profile from Address Book Was it easy to sign-up? 75% (9) – Yes 25% (3) – No response selected Tell us more. How can the sign-up experience be improved? Chicago Teacher (#1) and Techie Pub Trivia Rock Climber (#9) both were confused about choosing their profile from Address Book. Amateur Student (#12) wanted a sign-in option through Google. Grad Student (#8) thought that signing up was easy, but wanted to have more information about the frequency of e-mails. Grad Student also thought that the “Follow Places” sentence at the bottom was descriptive, but needed to be located more prominently. After signing up or opening the app, review the first ("Timeline") page. Two testers experienced bugs in this part of the test: Victoria P Test (#4) did not have anything populate on the “Timeline” page. Content appeared in mobile web but not in the app. Victoria P Test (#4) was able to see content on “Near You Now” page. Software Breaker (#10) had an error message appear saying there is a problem connecting to EveryBlock. Here are some other comments from testers: As a new user, Hockey Fan (#7) likes the dialogue and the recommendations and discussion around restaurants and new events. Techie Pub Trivia Rock Climber (#9) thought that some of the first few posts felt “spammy,” but liked the Tribune article and the post on a new local restaurant. Just Generally Curious (#5)’s expectations are met, but wants a larger element of personality in the user’s profile in order to help form an opinion better. Take a few minutes and look through different posts and tell us about viewing different content.  6 out of 12 testers (50%) thought that the posts were interesting provided relevant information.
  • 4. CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App In-person test on February 10, 2014  1 of these 6 testers did point out that the media mentions were already found in other sources, but still likes the information. This tester also says that they might not go to EveryBlock to ask questions.  1 tester was interested in having preference settings and filters to show what is relevant to them. Did you find a post you would want to comment on? 58% (7) – “Yes” 42% (5) – “No” If so, go ahead and make a comment and then tell us about how it was making a comment on this app. Here are some responses from testers who said “Yes”: Amateur student (#12) thought that posting a comment was super easy. She liked the fact that she could preview her comment before submitting. Application developer (#2) thought it was easy and familiar (like other apps). Application Developer had a small problem with autocorrect, and thinks it would be nice to edit the typo in the comment. Chicago Teacher (#1) was interested in commenting on some posts, but thought other posts were irrelevant. Chicago Teacher thinks that a timeline should show actual times, and that the posts should be time-stamped. Here are some responses from testers who said “No”: Lifelong Chicago resident (#6) did not think that making a comment was easy, and the story that she wanted to comment on was not formatted for comments. Lifelong Chicago resident is a new user, and was not comfortable making comments or posts. Techie Pub Trivia Rock Climber (#9) found a post that she liked, but after being asked to verify her e-mail, the program took her back into the browser on her phone and not back into the app. Works at Charter Schools, but not a teacher (#11) did not want to make comments or posts because she was concerned about privacy. She wanted to know how her name would appear on posts because she did not want to have her full name appear since a lot of information is connected with her location. She said “it feels sketchy.” Works at Charter Schools wants “People will see you as” option. Would you want share posts on social media? 67% (8) – Yes 33% (4) – No Why or why not? [re: sharing posts] Here are some responses from testers who said “Yes”: Grad Student (#8) will post if it’s something interesting. He also said that since he is in school, a lot of his friends are in the same neighborhood so the topics would be relevant.
  • 5. CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App In-person test on February 10, 2014 Amateur student (#12) would share posts that she thought people who followed her should know or if something is important, or something that she would want to support. Here are some responses from testers who said “No”: Victoria P Test (#4) is not sure about sharing posts, and is not clear about how to share a post on social media if she wanted to. She might consider sharing a newsworthy event in her neighborhood, but would like to see dates on posts to know if it was timely and share- worthy. Just Generally Curious (#5) would not share because if it exists here on EveryBlock, he does not feel the need to pull the content out. Just Generally Curious rarely posts on social media, and thinks that “EveryBlock is about the neighborhood, Facebook is about college friends, and Twitter is for nerd friends.” Which page did you find most useful? 67% (8) – Timeline 16.5% (2) – Popular 16.5% (2) – Near You Now Any reason? Timeline is the most useful: 8 out of 12 testers (67%) thought that Timeline was the most useful page because it showed the most relevant information. Application developer (#2) thought this page was the most useful, but found the most interesting post on the Near You Now page. Native Chicago Community Adventurer (#3) also thought Timeline was most useful, but wanted to use Near You Now on the weekends. Grad Student (#8) wanted to add more zip codes through the app because he wanted to personalize the Timeline to include other neighborhood information. Popular is most useful: 2 out of 12 testers (16.5%) thought that Popular page was the most useful because it was easy to find new information. Near You Now is most useful: 2 out of 12 testers (16.5%) thought that Near You Now page was the most useful because these testers were interested in what is going on around them at that time. Which page did you find least useful? 33% (4) – Near You Now 33% (4) – Popular 25% (3) – Timeline 9% (1) – N/A (thought all pages were useful) Any reason? Near You Now is the least useful:
  • 6. CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App In-person test on February 10, 2014 4 out of 12 testers (33%) did not think the information on this page was as relevant as other pages, or were interested in this type of news. Popular is the least useful: 4 out of 12 testers (33%) thought the Popular page was least useful. Hockey Fan (#7) liked Near You Now page the most and thought that the Popular page was least relevant to his surroundings. Lifelong Chicago Resident (#6) was most interested in pressing local matters in their community. Content appeared in mobile web but not in the app. Victoria P Test was able to see content on “Near You Now” page.  Software Breaker (#10) had an error message appear saying there is a problem connecting to EveryBlock. The app crashed when Amateur Student (#12) clicked on the New Post icon. In addition, the app crashed when Application Developer (#2) hit “Account Settings.” Once she made a post, the app did not redirect her to a new page, but instead went to a black page. Do users have an easy time posting or commenting on the app? Do they find things they want to comment on? In regards to making a comment, 58% of testers found a post they would want to comment on. Most testers thought it was easy to make a comment and was similar to other apps. 42% of testers did not want to make a comment. Some testers were not comfortable making comments, while others addressed privacy issues in making comments. One tester found a post that she might comment on, but the post was not formatted for comments. One tester explain that they “feel like not much of a contributor.” For many testers, the decision not to make a comment is due to personal use of apps and Web sites. Two testers specifically were concerned about privacy on EveryBlock. A suggestion from a tester is clarity and options to change how names will appear on posts and comments. 75% of testers liked the new post interface, and when asked what testers would want to post about, 50% of testers mentioned specific neighborhood news. 33% of testers thought it was easy to post. Testers also mentioned that they liked the preview button. Do users like the different pages in the app? 67% of testers thought that “Timeline” was the most useful page. As mentioned before, two testers did experience problems with this page, and this number could be even higher if these issues did not appear. Testers liked this page the most because it showed the most relevant information. Testers were also interested in the “Near You Now” page when “on the go” to learn more about other neighborhoods.
  • 11. CUTGroup 7 – EveryBlock iPhone App In-person test on February 10, 2014 One tester wanted to add more zip codes to follow through the app to create a more personalized experience. Would users use this app and in what scenarios might they post or comment? Would they use it "on the go"? 89% of testers liked the option of making posts on the go, 17% of testers were not sure if they would like it or thought they might use it rarely. The majority of testers thought this was a convenient option, and wants to comment on things while they are happening. One tester commented that she is a Twitter user and is used this concept. What features do users want to see in the EveryBlock app? While 75% of testers used EveryBlock, none of the testers ever used the iPhone app. Therefore, some testers had knowledge of the EveryBlock Web site and could compare these experiences. Testers who were familiar with the Web site were interested in having these features:  Search feature  Filters or an ability for users to choose what they want to see  Bookmark feature to read posts later  User Profile - more apparent and have incentive to contribute and “gain status” in the community  More information on Community Guidelines & Privacy  Address finder and map capabilities to help find locations Even testers who did not ever use EveryBlock before, testers were still interested in personalizing their experience. These testers also wanted to see features like filtering, search bars, and an option to delete irrelevant posts from the feed. Two testers would like to see dates and times on posts to see if posts are the most relevant. 67% of testers were interested in sharing posts on social media. More information on privacy is important to testers. One tester was shocked to find a post during the test about a break-in because it included the poster’s full name and the address of the break-in. There should be more options to see how much personal information is being posted, and to change privacy features within the app.
