JFK launched the New Frontier program which aimed to increase funding for education, medical care for the elderly, and end racial discrimination. This laid the groundwork for LBJ's Great Society program. LBJ declared a war on poverty through programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Head Start, Job Corps, and increased funding for education, housing, transportation, and the arts. The Great Society aimed to improve living conditions and enable people to lift themselves out of poverty through over 200 new programs across many areas including education, healthcare, housing, transportation, poverty, and the environment. However, the Great Society and Vietnam War strained the budget and divided public support.
