CARBON FOOTPRINT

A carbon footprint is “the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas)
emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual,
organization, event or product” (UK Carbon Trust 2008). An
individual, nation or organization's carbon footprint is
measured by undertaking a GHG emissions assessment.
Once the size of a carbon footprint is known, a strategy can
          be devised to reduce it.
Carbon offsets, or the mitigation of carbon emissions
through the development of alternative projects such as
solar or wind energy or reforestation, represent one way of
          managing a carbon footprint.

ECOLOGICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT

The ecological footprint is a measure of human demand
on the Earth's ecosystems. It compares human demand
with planet Earth’s ecological capacity to regenerate. It
represents the amount of biologically productive land and
sea area needed to regenerate the resources a human
population consumes and to absorb and render harmless
the corresponding waste. Using this assessment, it is
possible to estimate how much of the Earth (or how many
planet Earths) it would take to support humanity if
           everybody lived a given lifestyle.
Every year, this number is recalculated - with a three year
lag due to the time it takes for the UN to collect and
           publish all the underlying statistics.

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO OUR WORLD?

85,000,000 plastic bottles used every 3 minutes (National Geographic)

260,000,000 tons of plastic produced per year – only approx
          5% gets recycled

2,000 times more energy is needed to make/ship bottled water
          than tap water

ENVIRONMENT

“It has been estimated that up to one sixth of all child
fatalities and disease can be attributed to environmental
           factors.”
           Health European Commission

“82% of surveyed landfills had leaks.”
           green101.experience.com

“People living near solid waste landfills where gas is
escaping have a four-fold increased chance of bladder
           cancer or leukemia.”

FACTS ON TEXTILES

10% of all agricultural chemicals and 25% of insecticides are
       used to grow cotton

It takes almost 1/3 of a pound of chemicals for just ONE T-Shirt

Seven of the fifteen pesticides used in cotton are considered
“possible”, “likely”, “probable” or ‘known” human
       carcinogenic (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron,
       pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin)

GLOBAL TEXTILE MARKET

The global textiles market grew by 8.3% in 2008 to reach a
value of $1,138.3 billion, Datamonitor says

In 2013, the global textiles market is forecast to have a value
of $1,553.6 billion, an increase of 36.5% since 2008

BIODEGRADABLE

A process where, a substrate will degrade naturally, with the help of Biological
elements such as sun-rays, moisture, microbes and OR enzymes.

Once compost, this substrate will not pollute the soil by leaching toxicology
elements as is present in REGULAR Plastic or Paper products.

In fact, biodegradable products will compost and ENRICH the soil

WHY ECO-TEXTILES?

    Organically grown fibers:
Have a limited environmental ‘footprint’ (renewable source, no pesticides)
and reduces the impact on climate change (lower release of GHG emissions).
Better ‘traceability’ (where does it come from?)
Reduce the impact of non-renewable petroleum based synthetic materials
(polyamide, acrylic, etc.) which creates pollution.
    International support from:
Industry associations and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations)
Companies Corporate Social Responsibility and Fair & Ethical Trade initiatives
Green consumers group and growing public awareness
Media coverage and lifestyle status symbols
©Copyright InnovAsians Ltd.
WHAT ARE THE SOLUTIONS …?

Alternative sources for fibers and materials
Greener ways of growing and processing natural fibers such as cotton
         and ‘green’ products
Developing fabrics that consume less energy for washing, drying and
         ironing
Stimulating consumer demand for fair trade and sustainable textile
         products and materials
Putting more effort and organization into the recycling of textiles and
         clothing

           WHICH AVAILABLE ECO-TEXTILES TO APPLY?

  NATURAL:
Organic cotton environmentally friendlier - no pesticides, or
  insecticides during the growing cycle.
Hemp The ecological footprint of hemp is smaller than that of
most other plants. Hemp plants grow very quickly and densely
which makes it difficult for weeds to take hold, eliminating the
need for artificial fertilizers. It requires no irrigation as it thrives
on the amount of water in the average rainfall, and it is highly
  pest-resistant.
Wool Factory-farmed sheep Then there is the matter of not
bleaching the wool to get it white, or dyeing it.

           WHICH AVAILABLE ECO-TEXTILES TO APPLY?

Soy silk is made from the by-products of the tofu-making
process. The liquefied proteins are extruded into fibers which are
then spun, and used like any other fibers (woven, knitted, etc.).
Bamboo is a highly renewable ‘grass’, it requires less water
than cotton. It also has natural antibacterial properties and the
fabric "breathes". The resultant cloth is biodegradable.
Corn fiber Ingeo is created by extracting the starch and then
sugars from corn, and processing them to make a fiber, which can
be spun into a yarn or woven into fabric.
  RE-PURPOSED WASTE:
    …Other Eco-textiles include: Recycled
                                      Polyester fibers
Fortrel EcoSpun™ (made out of recycled plastics),
Milk Silk, Algae fibers (SeaCell) etc.

  • 4. CARBON FOOTPRINT A carbon footprint is “the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product” (UK Carbon Trust 2008). An individual, nation or organization's carbon footprint is measured by undertaking a GHG emissions assessment. Once the size of a carbon footprint is known, a strategy can be devised to reduce it. Carbon offsets, or the mitigation of carbon emissions through the development of alternative projects such as solar or wind energy or reforestation, represent one way of managing a carbon footprint. • 5. ECOLOGICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT The ecological footprint is a measure of human demand on the Earth's ecosystems. It compares human demand with planet Earth’s ecological capacity to regenerate. It represents the amount of biologically productive land and sea area needed to regenerate the resources a human population consumes and to absorb and render harmless the corresponding waste. Using this assessment, it is possible to estimate how much of the Earth (or how many planet Earths) it would take to support humanity if everybody lived a given lifestyle. Every year, this number is recalculated - with a three year lag due to the time it takes for the UN to collect and publish all the underlying statistics. Source: Wikipidia ©Copyright InnovAsians Ltd.

ENVIRONMENT “It has been estimated that up to one sixth of all child fatalities and disease can be attributed to environmental factors.” Health European Commission “82% of surveyed landfills had leaks.” green101.experience.com “People living near solid waste landfills where gas is escaping have a four-fold increased chance of bladder cancer or leukemia.” New York State Department of Health ©Copyright InnovAsians Ltd.
  • 11. FACTS ON TEXTILES 10% of all agricultural chemicals and 25% of insecticides are used to grow cotton It takes almost 1/3 of a pound of chemicals for just ONE T-Shirt Seven of the fifteen pesticides used in cotton are considered “possible”, “likely”, “probable” or ‘known” human carcinogenic (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin) ©Copyright InnovAsians Ltd.

  • 22. WHY ECO-TEXTILES? Organically grown fibers: Have a limited environmental ‘footprint’ (renewable source, no pesticides) and reduces the impact on climate change (lower release of GHG emissions). Better ‘traceability’ (where does it come from?) Reduce the impact of non-renewable petroleum based synthetic materials (polyamide, acrylic, etc.) which creates pollution. • 23. WHAT ARE THE SOLUTIONS …? Alternative sources for fibers and materials Greener ways of growing and processing natural fibers such as cotton and ‘green’ products Developing fabrics that consume less energy for washing, drying and ironing Stimulating consumer demand for fair trade and sustainable textile products and materials Putting more effort and organization into the recycling of textiles and clothing ©Copyright InnovAsians Ltd.
  • 24. InnovAsians Copyright 2007. All rights reserved WHICH AVAILABLE ECO-TEXTILES TO APPLY? NATURAL: Organic cotton environmentally friendlier - no pesticides, or insecticides during the growing cycle. Hemp The ecological footprint of hemp is smaller than that of most other plants. Hemp plants grow very quickly and densely which makes it difficult for weeds to take hold, eliminating the need for artificial fertilizers. It requires no irrigation as it thrives on the amount of water in the average rainfall, and it is highly pest-resistant. Wool Factory-farmed sheep Then there is the matter of not bleaching the wool to get it white, or dyeing it. ©Copyright InnovAsians Ltd.
  • 25. InnovAsians Ltd. Hong Kong. All rights reserved WHICH AVAILABLE ECO-TEXTILES TO APPLY? Soy silk is made from the by-products of the tofu-making process. The liquefied proteins are extruded into fibers which are then spun, and used like any other fibers (woven, knitted, etc.). Bamboo is a highly renewable ‘grass’, it requires less water than cotton. It also has natural antibacterial properties and the fabric "breathes". The resultant cloth is biodegradable. Corn fiber Ingeo is created by extracting the starch and then sugars from corn, and processing them to make a fiber, which can be spun into a yarn or woven into fabric. RE-PURPOSED WASTE: …Other Eco-textiles include: Recycled Polyester fibers Fortrel EcoSpun™ (made out of recycled plastics), Milk Silk, Algae fibers (SeaCell) etc. ©Copyright InnovAsians Ltd.
