– Gen Y is taking over
• Biggest generation since Baby Boomers
• Three times the size of Gen X
– Gen Y ...
• Are plugged-in - most are “digital natives”
• Don’t view TV as King - TV is consumed more on demand
• Care more about listening to what their friends and peers
say, rather than what an advert “shouts” at them
• Expect employers to be flexible with a modern culture
because work isn’t their whole world
• Are socially conscious but expect to be able to connect in
via their natural styles

12. The reason we will all begin to
transform our systems, operations,
enterprises and personal lives to take
advantage of a smart planet isn’t just
because we can.
It’s because we must.
13. What can Councils do to create a Smarter Planet?
The World is Getting Smarter: Because it Must
£2.5 billion wasted in energy bills by UK companies due to
inefficiencies such as leaving lights and computers on.
£7-8 billion is the estimated cost of road congestion in the
UK economy per year.
76% of apples consumed in the UK come from overseas –
travelling on average 3700 miles to reach us.
One third of the amount of food purchased by UK consumers
is thrown away.
Life span for a UK citizen is reduced by 8 months due to
poor air quality.
Financial markets spread risk but can’t track it; this has led
to undermined confidence and uncertainty.

14. We’ve thought about IT as the world of data centres,
software, PCs, routers, bandwidth.
We’ve thought about infrastructure as the world of
buildings, factories, hospitals, roads, pipelines.
Those worlds are converging.
We’re confident that the world can become smarter.
We’re building it with our clients.

16. What can Councils do to create a Smarter Planet?
Why is this relevant to Councils?
Councils are increasingly being made
responsible for societal outcomes

– Safer communities
– Children and young people
– Adult health and well being

Communities” through to general Well-being
These are often outside the scope of
their services
– and those of their partners

23. What can Councils do to create a Smarter Planet?
We’ve only just begun to
uncover what is possible on
a smarter planet.
The world will continue to become smaller,
flatter and smarter. We are moving into the age of
the globally integrated and intelligent economy,
society and planet.
Local Councils have a critical role.
