How Does the Tanning
   Process Work?
Tanning is an activity that scores of people engage in during the
summer months, on vacations and in tanning salons all year round.
A tan adds a measure of health and vitality to one’s appearance,
and it’s no wonder why it’s so popular.

But how does your skin go from pale to brown in such a short
period of time?

How does the tanning process really work?
About Sunlight
As everyone knows, sunlight is the natural source of that lovely tan
you have. Sunlight contains several forms of radiation, including:
• Visible light
• Infrared light
• Ultraviolet radiation

The UV form breaks down into three categories, which are UVA,
UVB and UVC. The UVB light is considered the one responsible
for tanning. When your body tans, it is a natural reaction to protect
against UV radiation.
What Is a Tan?
Within your skin are special skin cells called melanocytes that
produce melanin. Melanin is the skin pigment that is produced
when the melanocytes are exposed to the ultraviolet light found in
sunlight.

The melanin moves outside the cells and helps absorb the UV
radiation found in the sunlight to protect your skin from harm.
Why Does Your Tan Fade?
Anyone who has spent time in the sun knows that the tan you get
today won’t last forever. In fact, it will start to fade within a few
days to a week if you don’t have any additional sun exposure.

The reason that a tan fades is because newer cells that contain
less pigment end up pushing the tanned cells up to the surface.
Eventually, those tanned skin cells are scaled off and the lighter
cells underneath remain.
What Is a Sunburn?
Most people have been the unfortunate victim of a sunburn at one
time or another, and although people with naturally lighter skin are
more prone to get one, they can happen to almost anyone.

A sunburn is basically cellular damage from the sun’s rays.
Unprotected skin will absorb UVB in the outer layers and cause a
reaction that increases the bloodflow to the capillaries of the skin.
The added bloodflow results in the redness associated with a
sunburn
How Does a Tanning Bed Work?

Tanning beds are a viable alternative to maintain a tan during the
winter months, or anytime. Tanning beds use special light bulbs
that emit UV radiation to try and simulate the sun’s rays.

Tanning beds use mostly UVA light, which is thought to be safer for
your DNA than the UVB light found in the sun. It’s still important to
use caution and moderation when using a tanning bed, because
you’re still exposing yourself to UV light.
Tanning and Skin Tone
Tanning is predominantly an activity done by people with lighter
skin tones. People from dark-skinned races produce melanin all
the time, whether they venture out into the sun or not. This
ensures they always have pigment in the skin.

Dark-skinned people also have a reduced risk of skin cancer,
because the extra melanin is protecting them 24 hours a day.
