2. Genetic Disorders
A genetic disorder are caused when mutations, or changes in a person’s
DNA.
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that produces unusual thick mucus in
the lungs and intestines.
Down Syndrome is a genetic disorders that causes too many or too few
chromosomes.
Sickle-Cell disease is when blood cells lack hemoglobin causing the blood
cells to have a lack of oxygen. It also causes blood cells to break apart
prematurely and after breaking they look sickle-shaped, hence the sickle
cell disease.
The tools used to diagnose genetic disorders are amniocentesis and
karyotypes.

3. Principals of Heredity
The Heredity traits are determined by distinct genes.
Everyone carries 2 genes for each trait, one from each parents sex cell.
When an individual reproduces, the two genes split and end up in different
gametes.
Traits are controlled by dominant and recessive alleles because if there’s
two dominant alleles the trait would be the dominant trait. If there were two
recessive alleles the trait would the recessive trait. If it was one dominant
one recessive then the offspring would have the dominant trait. In the end
depending on the alleles you have and which ones are dominant or
recessive, it affects the official trait expressed in the offspring.
Traits are controlled with co-dominant alleles by mixing the two
together to create one trait.
4. Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project was made in the 1980s. It was made
so researchers can know the genetic basis of all disease. A genome
is genetic information that makes up an organism.
5. Thought’s of designer babies
In the words of Jessica’s youth group leader Amanda says: This is a really
interesting topic, because I'm sure you have found people feel pretty
strongly one way or the other.I personally just think its one more way to
vastly separate those who can afford it and those who can't. With this kind
of "designer baby" imagine the new form of teasing that could take place,
instead of "Susie has down syndrome" it would be "Susie has down
syndrome because her parents couldn't afford to "design her"People have
never been able to choose what they look like or what (if any)
developmental disabilities they have. This new form of science -impressive
though it is- seems to me to be a huge step in the wrong direction. This is
the kind of eugenics and master race thing that Nazi Germany tried to
perfect so long ago and how sad to think there is now science to defend
their endeavors.
6. Argument 1
Designer babies aren’t very ethical. We think that because you are
changing the looks of your child to fit your standards. If this is something
that is going to happen repeatedly everyone is going to be smart, athletic,
pretty, handsome etc. no one will look like their parents because their
parents are changing them to look the way they want. Most people will be
so much alike because everyone wants to be smart, athletic, pretty, and
handsome because that’s most likely how you parents are going to make
you. So just what Amanda said if your parents cant afford to “design” you
no one is going to except you if you aren’t smart or if you have a genetic
disorder people will laugh at you and call you names.

7. Argument 2
Some say that they have designer babies because it's to
balance out their families. I'm still against it. It's like
saying that you wouldn't love your kid because he/she is
that sex. Not only is that horrible, it's against the laws of
nature. Not only do people choose the sex, but how
their kid looks too and they choose mostly not to have it
have genetic defects. It's like saying you wouldn't love
your kid if they had brown hair or down syndrome. It's
unethical and obnoxious! Pretty cruel... Not just that but
it doesn’t always work out. Would the parent still love
them? Or would they be selfish enough to abandon a kid
who didn’t even choose to be a certain way.
7
8. Argument 3
Another reason I’m against Designer Babies is because it messes up with
nature and destiny. What if the embryo you killed was one day going to
save us from disaster? Or find cures for what is today considered
incurable? When you think about it, you’re killing a child. Some people may
not think of it like that though because the child hasn’t matured. They’re
killing a human being that hasn’t experienced the world yet or proven their
purpose in life.
8
9. Argument 4
One way we think designer babies are, in a sense, good, is that you can try
to make sure your child doesn’t have a genetic disorder. What if your family
had a history of, let’s say, cystic fibrosis. I would think a parent wouldn’t
want they’re kid to have mucus stuck in their lungs and intestines. Even
taking chances could have the parent worrying. Or what if the family has a
history of severe mental illness and didn’t want their child to have to endure
that sort of life? It’s enough to make parents wonder if they shouldn’t have
the baby in the first place. Designer Babies would help at least lessen the
chance of a child having issues that could affect their day to day life as they
mature.
9
10. Graphs and Charts
This is the way they make the embryos to
make the designer baby.
This is a bar graph that states 32% say yes, to
prevent a health condition. 30% Say it’s immoral
15% say parents should have free choice. 15% are not
sure. 8% think it should be banned.
