Basic Principles of Genetics ,[object Object]
The traits of an organism are controlled by genes
Organisms inherit genes in pairs, one gene from each parent
Some genes are dominant, whereas other genes are recessive
Dominant genes hide recessive genes when both are inherited by an organism
Some genes are neither dominant nor recessive. These genes show incomplete dominance,[object Object]
13 year project, completed in 2003
Goal of HGP was to identify all genes in human DNA
Current and potential applications of genome research includes Molecular medicine, Energy sources and environmental applications, Risk assessment , Bioarchaeology, anthropology, evolution, and human migration, DNA forensics (identification) and Agriculture, livestock breeding, and bioprocessing
GINA protects Americans from discrimination based on information derived from genetic tests. It forbids insurance companies from discriminating through reduced coverage or pricing and prohibits employers from making adverse employment decisions based on a person’s genetic code. In addition, insurers and employers are not allowed under the law to request or demand a genetic test. ,[object Object]
Genetic Disorders Compare & Contrast Single Gene disorders are caused by alteration or mutation of a specific gene in the affected person’s DNA. Multifactorial disorders are caused by mutations in multiple genes, which may interact with environmental factors. Chromosome abnormality reflects the number of chromosomes or a structural abnormality in one or more chromosomes These disorders are caused by different things.
Genetic Disorders Compare & Contrast 2 The thing that these disorders share is the fact that they all affect the life of a human. They also affect the DNA. Single Gene disorder mutates a gene in the DNA. Multifactorial disorder mutates multiple genes in the DNA Chromosome abnormality reflects the multiple genes or not the right number of chromosomes a human needs.

  • 14. Stem Cell Basics There are 4 types of Stem Cell research. Stem cells are cells that can make an exact copy of specialized cells for various tissues in the body. Stem cells are like a repair system for the human body. Stem cells come from embryos which are found in umbilical cords and fetuses. A stem cell can either stay as a stem cell or develop into another special cell such as a muscle , blood , or brain cell.
  • 15. Argument 1 I am against embryonic stem cell research because in order to get the stem cells you need to get an abortion which my religion doesn't allow. Abortion is considered a sin. Although embryonic stem cells can be found in other places, such as umbilical cords, they don’t have as much stem cells as fetus.
  • 16. Argument 2 Embryonic Stem cell research is wrong because you are killing a child. So a life is lost to save others. Another way of obtaining stem cells without killing the fetus is by extracting the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus. These stem cells are multi-potent and can expand greatly without any feeders. But harvesting stem cells and creating embryos is like playing God. We should just accept life how it is and make the best out of it.
  • 17. Argument 3 I support the study of embryonic Stem cell research because stem cells are able to cure many diseases. Scientist are now learning how to grow tissue which will be able to cure several illness such as Parkinson's, spinal cord injury, heart disease, diabetes, and much more.
  • 18. Argument 4 Another reason why I support the study of embryonic stem cell research is because scientist can learn about how we are formed and try to reverse diseases such as cancer and birth defects. If scientists could learn how to develop organs such as the heart out of stem cells, they could be used to test drugs on to find out witch ones were safe and witch ones were not.
  • 19. Conclusion Although that it is a sin to have abortions, it is also a good thing because stem cells can cure some cancers and replace unhealthy cells. Scientist are learning how to grow organs and tissues which will lead to the cure of illness such as Parkinson's, spinal cord injury, heart disease, and diabetes. Having an abortion is bad but it is for a good cause.
