4. The city developed as a fishing centre. The
word „rybnik” means fishpond in several
Slavic languages, including Czech and
Silesian.

The Rybnik area with its
large coal mines and
power plants is an
important economic
region of Poland, and
visible center of music,
with a famous State
School of Music and
Philharmonic Orchestra.

8. Nature
In contrast to the central
part of the Upper Silesian
Industry Area a short
distance to the north,
Rybnik enjoys the
reputation of a "green" city
having a relatively clean
environment. The Beskidy
Mountains, a popular
recreational area, also for
skiing, are within a 1–2
hours drive.
10. Rybnik’s „Sea”
To the north-east of the
built-up area, there is a
reservoir (Zalew
Rybnicki) on the river
Ruda, which serves as
a cooling water source
for the power station.
Surrounded by forests,
it offers swimming,
fishing, sailing and
surfing opportunities,
and due to the power
station's waste heat it is
warm enough all year
to be a habitat for grass
carps

entertainment galleries Rybnik Plaza and
Focus Mall.

Rybnicki Klub Motorowy (Rybnik's
Motorcycle Club) is a Polish motorcycle
speedway team based in Rybnik which
currently competes in First League (2nd
division). RKM Rybnik is one of the oldest
and best teams in Polish speedway - they
won Polish champion titles 12 times
